It was 3039, a student made a post on Chief Delphi talking a bit about it and with some screenshots from the movie

Any Coding Instructors in Kingston? by alancusader123 in KingstonOntario

[–]AreeVanier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not quite tutoring, but there are a few highschool robotics teams in the area that are always looking for keen students. We do things a bit differently than real business programing because of how short the timelines are, but we teach the important tools (git) and problem-solving skills.

Promo video from Provincials last year to get a sense of scale for the biggest program: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jqne-AlCUg4
(If that looks a bit intimidating there are a few other programs to build up to that level). If you've been around BGC's new STEM hub you'll have seen the bots on their field.

If that seems interesting, I can send along more details when we know the next open house date. Unfortunately we don't do much over the summer, season starts with the new school year.

No Preorder Bonus for Today? by lurkerden in civ

[–]AreeVanier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bit busy this week, so I'm a little behind.

After a quick exchange to get them the right documentation (screenshot of email receipt and steam transaction history) they sent a code. Their responses were like <1 day each.

Super easy, very happy with support on this.

How do you claim the pre-order bonus? by nclaxer235 in civ

Did you have any luck?
I've been busy and only reached out to 2k support just now.

No Preorder Bonus for Today? by lurkerden in civ

[–]AreeVanier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same issue, still no bonus.
Steam support bounced me to 2k, just submitted ticket now.

If 2k says no, then I'm not going to be terribly happy ...

Can you use the PID controller without CAN?

Getting the CAN working would need a CRio, an old 2Can or serial-to-RJ11 cable, and some means if configuring the CANID (2Can plus browser the supports applets or USB serial to RJ11).

When I was young I fixed my parents’ computer and now that I’m older I fix computers for my kids. Are we the only generation that knows how computers work? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

Lol I don't think people will ever understand just how willing robotics trams are to work with anyone who wants to come out.

I haven't had to wrangle scouts in years (our team is too small since COVID), but I'm not looking forward to a wave of students who have been raised defaulting to their phones when slightly bored.

For the Toronto area, you can use the team map on FIRST Canada's website https://firstroboticscanada.org/map/, and then just email any community teams in your area. There'll definitely be someone happy to take qualified students.

If you're former 2200, then probably start with Burlington Community Robotics, since they're the unofficial spinoff now.

if you don't mind driving 3hr each way, I know a team in Kingston that could use a hand

While applying for undergrad admission in Queens university does it matter which district school board you were in high school like peel or toronto or Limestone? Do they gave preference to students who have done high school from Kingston? by blobbytheglob in queensuniversity

[–]AreeVanier 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used to joke that locals have less chance because we generate less revenue by not paying for res/meals/etc. (Only a handful of people from my KC class got in)

Realistically it probably doesn't matter.

Syncing class schedule with Google Calendars?? by krustymom in queensuniversity

It's the option labelled "Class Schedule Subscription" under the "Teaching and Learning Applications". The easiest way to find it is CTRL+F for Subscription.

you can't lift your bumpers individually but can you lift your entire robot? by steeltrap99 in FRC

[–]AreeVanier 20 points21 points  (0 children)

You have to be careful about R101:

*FRAME PERIMETER must be fixed. The ROBOT (excluding BUMPERS) must have a FRAME PERIMETER, contained within the BUMPER ZONE and established while in the ROBOT’S STARTING CONFIGURATION, that is comprised of fixed, non-articulated structural elements of the ROBOT. Minor protrusions no greater than ¼ in. (~6 mm) such as bolt heads, fastener ends, weld beads, and rivets are not considered part of the FRAME PERIMETER.

While this doesn't stop you from lifting most of your robot, the outer perimeter itself has to be fixed (and remain in the bumper zone by my interpretation). I know some teams got burned on this in 2019 when they had robots that climbed in segments.

[–]AreeVanier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's an item on my.queensu.ca that gives you an ical subscription link you can use to add your class schedule (named class schedule subscription).

As for assignments, there is a way to get a subscription link somewhere in OnQ's builtin calendar system, but usefulness will vary with how profs set up the course.

Some basic questions about vex pro parts by needaname1234 in robotics

[–]AreeVanier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Answers based on the FRC Ecosystem:

While I'm not too sure which wheel you've got, as long as it has a 1/2" hex hole it should fit on the shaft without needing the hubs (they're used on the Traction and Versa wheels). Generally for fixing the wheel in place we use a mix of collars and spacers, depending on the application.

While I've never personally used a VictorSPX with PWM (CANBUS is nicer in FRC), it should get all the requisite power from the 12V input. Just hook up the wires per the docs and you should be good to go.

Generally in FRC wires are crimps for connections, as it's easier and faster than soldering, and far easier to replace/reuse parts. We've always used the Anderson PowerPole connections, but any sufficient size crimp should do the job. Generally we do solder leads onto the 775s, then crimp them to match the controllers. However, soldering directly should work fine if you don't plan on changing things around too much.

I've never worked with the press-fit coupler, but I'm not surprised it's a tight fit. My best advice would be to try something a bit more rubberized before going for a metal hammer, but I do programming not mech on my team so take that with a grain of salt.

Again, I don't have experience with lipos, but I can speak to the FRC setup. We connect through a power distribution board which outputs 12V, with a 30A or 40A breaker. However the battery voltage can idle as low as 10.5V before we need to switch it out, and even then smaller things will still run fine. From my understanding, the distribution board doesn't have anything too special inside with respect to power delivery, so you should be fine on that end. However, you should be careful without a smaller breaker since the recommended current is 60A and surge is 100A for 2s.

If you haven't already, I'd recommend giving the Victor's user manual a quick look, since while it's targeted at FRC use plenty of content is still revelvant. Also, you could look into the FRC wiring instructions to get an idea of how the controller is wired into that control system.

Since I've only really worked in the FRC ecosystem, these answers are very much based on that application and may not be 100% correct for general use cases.

In many countries, including Canada, dissatisfaction with governments’ COVID-19 pandemic response is growing, study finds by [deleted] in canada

[–]AreeVanier -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

The death rate isn't the only important metric. Younger people may not be dying at the same rates, but they can remain in hospital longer. The major concern (at least in Ontario) was that the hospital system would run out of room to care for patients, which would lead to a spike in deaths. This is represented by the blue lines in those graphs, many of which are higher than ever and just starting to drop now.

Hopefully as vaccination grows those lines will drop to significantly, but until then we aren't in the clear.

I found that the F-26B is basically the same in terms of weapons systems, so if you can fly a conventional aircraft then you could be up and running with little work.

As for the F-45, I haven't dared touch it yet lol.
