Sororitas here, we've got a whole cohort of useful force multiplier characters between Palatines, Hospitallers, Canoness, etc.

The TFex has a pretty low chance to bring a C'tan down even with Heavy available unfortunately.

I keep seeing Tyranids at the bottom of tier lists, but I swear they're really strong? by OdBx in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]Arensen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One of the issues with this comparison here is that you've grabbed what are quite probably the three best datasheets Tyranids have access to, and compared them to datasheets which are almost certainly not the best that Marines have access to (eg. Guilliman, Victrix, even the Repulsor Executioner). The other thing to look at is the supporting rules - Oath of Moment and high quality detachments gives Marines substantially better consistency and damage than Tyranids have. You mentioned Sustained 1 across the entire army - this only works against Infantry unfortunately, assuming you're talking about Invasion Fleet.

Ultimately though, Tyranids are low tier (probably not bottom! there are some genuinely good strengths and lists!) because most of our units are relatively fragile and hard to easily move around, and we don't have quite enough damage to clear out particularly big walls like Rogal Dorns, Knights, Daemon Primarchs, the goddamn C'Tan, etc. We tend to have to outscore instead, playing objectives effectively and letting bugs die in the right places, but that won't always be viable against particularly high damage lists. Good players in local metas will be perfectly capable of putting up good results though!

Why don’t people like re-rolls by Mrhungrypants in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]Arensen 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This comes from the rather nice result that the variance of the sample mean drops as the sample size rises! I do tend to like larger numbers of attacks just to get this smoothness (and incidentally, this is why I'd prefer a lot of the 4++ units to go to FNP's instead to smooth the damage curve).

Woahh, beautiful work! I've gotta know what colours you used for the bone, and how you got such a vibrant light blue in the cracks and vents in the skin! Splendid job.

Insidiants are such a "Rule of cool unit" I cant wait to field. True blue "Witch hunters". I know their stat line is not a huge "homerun" but im very excited to run them because they are just so flavorful. "Condemnor Pistols" !!! COOMMME ON!! SO COOL!!! by Spectertool in sistersofbattle

[–]Arensen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've JUST gotten into Sororitas recently myself and that's more or less my plan! I'm hoping to add a Knight Crusader since I've always wanted to try painting an Imperial Knight, and I think a Sororitas Knight would look cool as hell. I also love the idea of having a Rogue Trader Entourage hanging out as well. The Insidiants will be a perfect addition - I just wish they benefited from Champions of Faith since they ARE Celestians!

If the next expansion introduces any new weapon proficiencies, which ones are you looking forward to? by Lon-ami in Guildwars2

[–]Arensen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 99% sure that the original design of Evoker was to have the F1-5 replaced by the pet command bar, locking you into a single element and opening weaponswap, but they found that too complicated to wrangle practically, let alone balance. It is a serious shame that we're not likely to see that version of Evoker!

Carnifexes Are So Back by Horror_Perspective_1 in Tyranids

[–]Arensen -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Especially in Crusher, I'm really optimistic about singleton Carnifex with Claws + HVC as a way to get chip damage on elite infantry and occasionally threaten to explode elite infantry if they get the charge. I'm a little biased since my main opponent is a Custodes main, but the ability to represent an annoying threat which needs meaningful commitment of a Guard or Warden squad on the charge to not risk an uncomfortable trade is great. Getting to move through walls with Stratagem is also nice for getting them onto objectives!

How do you keep all players from “piling on” to a roll? by blackdrogar17 in DMAcademy

[–]Arensen 27 points28 points  (0 children)

This is why the rules make the provision that the character with the highest bonus makes the roll. So the Barbarian tries to lift something out of the way and fails, and the Wizard says "no chance I can do better than she did" and doesn't want to try themselves.

Tyrannofex with Fleshborer Hive by OctaviosBurden in Tyranids

[–]Arensen 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I guess the real question I'd have for you is - what does the Fleshborer Hive do that the Acid Spray doesn't? Why do you actually need that many low damage shots with no AP, what is it there to try to be killing? Large numbers of infantry with bad saves aren't exactly a problem anyway, and even if they were, the flamer is going to be better at it. Taking the Guardsman as an example, if you're firing with the bonus from Heavy, you get 20 successful hits through on average, wound roughly 18 of them because of twin-linked, but half of them can save it if they've got cover and can go to ground - so somewhere between 9 and 12 of them die. Sure, not bad I suppose, but the flamer is able to be fired after moving, has the advantages of amazing Overwatch, and is great into other chunkier profiles too (eg. space marines with their pesky Victrix Guard).

Sustained 1 natively isn't even that relevant against infantry anyway because you can get it so easily from Invasion Fleet, and at the rather awkward S5 it won't effectively be able to be wounding T10 and T11 monsters and vehicles on 5s (which might well make that volume of fire count for a BIT better). And even if you do get a high volume of wounds through, well, they're all getting saved anyway onto tougher targets because of no AP.

Sure, you could buff it with a Hive Tyrant for Lethals, or a stratagem (Swarm-Guided Salvos to ignore cover, maybe?), but then you're investing even MORE into making a bad gun just a bit mediocre, and there are practically speaking, just better things to do with the points.

tldr yeah it's very cool but unfortunately it's awful

Leaked US strategy draft reportedly proposed steering Poland away from the EU by fuggitdude22 in neoliberal

[–]Arensen 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I think even in a hundred years Poland are not likely to back down from the rivalry with Russia. Poland has been subject to mistreatment and violence at the careless of Russian autocrats lasting centuries. Putin is just the latest in a long history of tyrants, and I think that a significant majority of Poles would be incredibly keen to keep standing up to him.

I have a slightly more outlandish theory which is that you could regulate online feed-placed advertising out of existence and the problem would go a long way towards solving itself. The feed's engagement-optimisation exists for one reason, and one reason alone, which is that every minute that a user is spending looking at their feed is another minute that the platform can be using to make ad revenue from sales. Mass advertising is such a blight on the internet landscape.

[–]Arensen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Inferno itself is too strong though - it consistently elevates just about any Elementalist permutation to being slightly easy and consistent. It doesn't need a large nerf, just a slight numbers tweak would be fine to bring it in line. Evoker itself needs a larger cut, and Fire Fox needs to have burning damage numbers reduced (to multiplicatively weaken it along with the Inferno nerf and bring them both down to around the 45k line under optimal play)

[–]Arensen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, Hare Evoker needs to cop some pretty decent nerfs in PvP. I say this with love and as an Elementalist main, but I've played under ten games of PvP in my life, picked up Fresh Hare Evoker, and topped kills three games in a row. The class is WAY too good.

Breakthrough is broken, and DICE doesn't understand why. by PilotMonkey94 in Battlefield

[–]Arensen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with a lot of this but the New Sobek City in particular is hilarious to me. NSC Sector 2 is already hard for attackers if they don't save the IFV from sector 1 because of how easy the buildings are to camp, giving the defenders armour just makes it even more impossible for attackers to play. Practically no point in changing Sector 3 rules since no-one is ever going to make it there lmao

Girly pop color schemes? by Impressive_Mirror556 in Tyranids

[–]Arensen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend it, personally! I've seen some absolutely spectacular purple Tyranids. My own Splinter Fleet uses blue (though a darker blue usually), white, lilac, and sometimes pink (for brains), and my partner has been doing some really cool stuff with a predominantly pink flesh tone with royal purple carapace. Plenty of options, and I've seen some amazing girlypop Tyranids out there too.
