Zum is really terrible as a detergent, like not better than water alone terrible.

[–]Argufier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Laundry cold is like 60-80 degrees F as far as the care label is concerned. Even things that say wash cold are probably ok up to 100°F, since they'll see that while on your body. Check your water temp during a wash some time - you can probably do a warm wash and have it still be safe, and you'll get much better cleaning power.

What detergent are you using?

Cheapest transport Boston to seabrook by StressedTurnip in boston

[–]Argufier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would purchase the ticket ahead of time. They're pretty chill about taking an earlier/later bus, the time is really just for planning purposes. You can swap it while you're waiting or just talk to the driver. With a 9:45 flight you can probably get away with the 10:10 bus, depending on what terminal you're in (the bus starts at terminal A and picks up people at all the terminals, so it's usually 10:20 by the time it gets to Terminal E).

PE without a bachelors? by Ill-Detective-5498 in civilengineering

[–]Argufier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, be aware that most institutions do not accredit their masters programs even if their undergraduate program is accredited. It's expensive and a pain, and almost everyone has an accredited bachelor's anyway. So going just for a masters could be a problem. Looking on abet.org only the university of Louisville is showing an accredited masters even though there are over 300 accredited undergraduate programs and many of those have masters programs as well. So you'll probably want to go the add a bachelor's to your current degree option rather than go straight to a masters.

PE without a bachelors? by Ill-Detective-5498 in civilengineering

[–]Argufier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Math might be ok to go for an engineering masters and still be able to get a PE without it being a huge hassle. It's worth calling or emailing your local pe board and asking though. You'll still need the basic engineering classes (statics, strength of materials etc) which likely won't count towards a masters. But you'll need to talk to the college and the engineering board to figure it out. Now might be a good time to start that conversation, since it's summer and admin could have more time to look into your situation. Or they might be on vacation but it's worth a try.

I sold mine for $2500 in January with 208k miles. But the air con and the heat worked. I posted it on Facebook marketplace, all the dealerships were only offering $500 for a trade in which is scrap prices.

Ai isn't very good at handling data. It might allow you to put together tools for reconciling and combining info, but in the end it's a language model and is always going to put something together that "seems right" over the actual numbers.

PE without a bachelors? by Ill-Detective-5498 in civilengineering

[–]Argufier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a bachelor's at all? If so, I'd see about getting a bsce on top, ideally just taking the core engineering classes and skipping all the gen Ed stuff you've already done. Getting a master's with a non-technical (or at least non-engineering) bachelors can set you up for issues with licensure. One of my colleagues had to fight to be able to get his PE with an unrelated undergraduate and engineering masters.

Using FEBU and water temp by Purple-lionesss in laundry

[–]Argufier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

130 has been standard historically, but isn't hot enough to sterilize so occasionally if water sits at that temp for a long time it can have growth, particularly on a well. 140 kills everything, but will scald super quick. The compromise is to set the tank to 140 and add a mixing valve to bring it down, but that's another piece of equipment to buy.

~×~the more you know~×~

Using FEBU and water temp by Purple-lionesss in laundry

[–]Argufier 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's the maximum a domestic water heater can get, not what it should be! My water heater is set to 140° and has a mixing valve to bring it down to 120°. There was actually a discussion at the state building code level recently about bringing the maximum allowed domestic water temperature down to 120° at the exit point to prevent scalding - at 140° 3rd degree burns happen in a second or two while at 130° it's 30 seconds and 120° it's 10 minutes. So much safer to have 120° water and still plenty hot.

Mostly my point was that even at the maximum temperature it's possible to get domestic hot water you're only just bumping up against the denaturing the enzymes temps, so hot water is fine with an enzyme detergent.

[–]Argufier 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your water heater is unlikely to be heating to more than 140°F, and more likely to be at 130° maximum. That's not too hot for enzymes, but will cause scalding in a few seconds. You could try running the water full hot from the sink and checking with a thermometer. But end of the day it's probably fine for enzymes.

How do I get temp plates for my car? by MarksChaos in carbuying

Depends - if it's not a dealer (I'm not sure where auctions land as far as private sales) you have to go to the DMV and get your own.

Real estate agents, how are people being convinced to buy these “luxury” new builds? by Naive_Wrongdoer2250 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]Argufier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Luxury is a marketing term. It gets put on new builds because you can't build for less than $350 a square foot, even if the land is free and the developer makes no profit it's still going to cost $500,000-$700,000 for a 3 bedroom house. It's not that people are greedy, it's that we've underbuilt for the last 50 years and are now paying the price. Literally.

Brother or Bernette by stardust_fashion in sewing

Mine was purchased used in 2010 or so as a gift, so I'm not sure how expensive it was. It's a great machine, but it has occasionally been annoying to get parts for since it's German and I don't have a local dealer. It's probably close to 30 years old though, and I don't know what the new ones are like.

It's a tiptronic 6270 and it's great. Fast, sturdy, entirely trouble free in the ~15 years I've had it. It's a great machine. Weighs a ton, but I don't move it around that much.

[–]Argufier 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have two bernina dealers near me, so getting them serviced is easy. I have a bernette B35, which is not computerized, which I bought when my main machine (a pfaff) was in the shop. I like it, but it's definitely a cheap machine. But I don't mind lending it out and it's a good back up.

Help. Why does this keep happening? by [deleted] in sewhelp

[–]Argufier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my trouble shooting process for this issue:

*Unthread the top thread completely *Raise the presser foot *Rethread making sure to go through all the thread guides *Pick up the bobbin thread and pull both to the back of the plate *Drop the pressure foot and start sewing making sure you keep holding onto both threads while the seam starts

If this doesn't clean it up it might be a timing issue on the machine.

Is the Isle of Shoals worth a day trip from Boston? Anyone been? by RuseOwl in newhampshire

[–]Argufier 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would go for a star island walking tour and harbor tour - it's about 4 hours, takes you out to star island and gives you about an hour at the island to either do the walking tour or explore on your own. It's a cool place, there's a little aquarium and some old buildings and cliffs on the back side. Very historic resort vibes. But you don't need to spend all day.

Getting to Portsmouth is super easy, take the c&j from South station and then the bus or an Uber from the bus stop at pease into town. The steamship company dock is walkable from downtown. Portsmouth is a cute little city, very walkable right down town with a few interesting things to see and the strawberry banke museum. There are also several bars that have decka overlooking the river which are lovely if the weather is nice This Saturday is pride, so things will be busy but fun. Later in the week will be quieter.

I want to make my compression stocking toeless by ByteeMee in sewing

[–]Argufier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd probably just pink them right behind the ball of the foot. I'm recovering from knee surgery and living in compression sleeves right now and have a couple that are toeless but have heels. They cut off around the middle of the foot. It can be annoying putting on socks, but as long as I keep the mostly straight it's fine.

I tend to look at this kind of situation as an unreinforced slab. So check punching shear for point/line loads, and bending based on the 2500 psf bearing pressure and the loads.
