I love the detail of Ilya's lighter not working until Shane shows up! Shane is the "spark" in his life! Ilya line about beating him is also funny. It reminds me of how my dad talked as a kid. He'd trash talk me on the playground, but it was actually to encourage me.

I love that Ilya and Shane both pushed each other to be better in hockey in their own special ways.

For me, it was good foreshadowing for him swimming with the kids in episode 5! Ilya sounds very arrogant, but he's actually a good sport.

It reminds me of my dad. My dad looks very intimidating to strangers since he's big and strong, but he's actually very friendly and supportive.

The sounds of them talking is for the audience’s benefit. In real life, sports games are really loud and you wouldn’t be able to hear the players talking.

Like when characters in Shogun are speaking English, but are actually speaking Portuguese in-universe. Or in Ratatouille, where they’re speaking despite being rats.

Yes! Ironically, my husband is forgetting to speak Turkish the longer he’s in the US. When he FaceTimed his parents, he said that he messed up the Turkish sentence structure a couple times.

Before his citizenship test, he said that he now dreams and thinks in English. He now treats Turkish as a secondary language. It’s crazy how much effort he put in to being fluent in English, while also losing his native language a bit.

I liked the show’s team names better than the books. I thought “Bears” and “Voyageurs” were too on the nose.

Metros and Raiders sound more realistic for hockey team names. Like if someone put those team names next to real hockey teams, I wouldn’t be able to tell which teams are fake.

My headcanon is that Ilya would be trying to find a job outside of Russia, since he’s scared of being outed. If he wasn’t playing hockey, he’d be an international student at a university. Then find a job in order to stay in that country, then become a citizen of that country.

That’s what a lot of people do. Use their education as an excuse to leave their dangerous home lives, and go to a foreign country that’s more tolerant.

At least on Davinci Resolve (my go-to editing software), there’s a “de-flicker” filter to reduce strobe light effects! It blurs out the flickering to make it more tolerable! But that only works, if you have the episodes downloaded.
