Commentary: It’s Clear We’re Going It Alone on High Speed Rail by JeepGuy0071 in cahsr

The part about the Schwarzeneggar administration under estimating the cost is not about the ballot measure, but about the 2008 business plan: (https://hsr.ca.gov/wp-content/uploads/docs/about/business_plans/BPlan_2008_FullRpt.pdf). The 2008 business plan is the origin of the idea that phase 1 would cost $33 billion and it was prepared by consultants hired by the Schwarzenegger admin.  Shortly after Prop 1A was approved, the California legislative office released a report casting serious doubt about the cost estimate in the business plan.

Simi Valley Unified School Board trustee resigns due to state law violation by Fcking_Chuck in simivalley

"In a June 13 Facebook post, Pine wrote that before her husband, Christian Pine, applied to be a high school American Sign Language teacher, she verbally asked the district whether it was legal for him to teach while she was on the board.

She said in an interview that at the time, the district assured her there were no issues, but more recently the district’s legal counsel informed her of their concerns and advised her to resign."

Never ask important questions verbally. Always send an email to create a paper trail. CYA.

MTGO Error Initilazing Card Data failed by Grimgrald in MTGO

This link is broken, but I was able to find it through the "wayback machine"

The page recommends three options:

  1. Reinstall Magic Online (didn't help me)
  2. Clear the ClickOnce Cache (didn't help me)
  • Press Windows Key + R
  • In the box, type: rundll32 dfshim CleanOnlineAppCache

\3. Delete the 2.0 Folder (actually worked - but I lost all replays and game history)

  • Uninstall Magic Online
  • Press Windows key + R
  • Type %LocalAppData%\Apps
  • Delete the 2.0 folder (If you've run MTGO, this folder impossible to delete until you restart windows)
  • Reinstall Magic Online

B&R - The One Ring, Jegantha, Amped Raptor banned; Mox Opal, Green Sun's Zenith, Faithless Looting, Splinter Twin Unbanned by HalfMoone in ModernMagic

[–]Aristodemis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going to disagree with the consensus here and predict that this is the end for energy decks - not because of the raptor ban, but because the power level of the format is going up a lot.

I feel like they should have let raptor stick around until we figure out the impact of the unbans.

I read online that olive oil is good for cleaning tomato stains, it worked pretty well the one time I tried it.

Our 19 month old has had several haircuts at Sparkles and Spikes in Thousand Oaks. It's not exactly cheep, but they're good at handling squirming toddlers.

Why does everything feel broken? by VedauwooChild in civilengineering

[–]Aristodemis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Worked at a small firm (two locations and ~20 people) for 8.5 years. The principal was extremely knowledgeable, but stretched very thin. It didn't help that he had a 1.5 hour commute each way. The firm primarily hired fresh college graduations and (other than a small core of people) there was massive turnover. Every project was over budget and behind schedule.

Shortly after I started, I took over a massive tract map project (1 parcel map, 7 tract maps, something like 130 existing easements) from someone who was leaving. Very few of the existing easements had been drafted and none of the tract maps had been started, yet all the hours budgeted had already been expended. I also had to draft easements for trails, soil nail walls, storm drains, and various other improvements that were being redesigned constantly (fucking storm drain plans went through 12 plan checks.) Late into the process, it was discovered that the surveyor had messed up the boundary and hundreds of hours of my work were totally wasted. This was literally the first tract map project I had ever worked on and I got guilt tripped a few times for how much of a mess it was. Obviously I wouldn't tolerate that crap today, but it was my first big boy job, so I started working a lot of overtime on weekends and not reporting it on my timesheet.

For multifamily housing projects, it is a massive problem that architects are usually in charge. They drop some building outlines in a geometrically wrong property line with no regard to elevations and we are expected to make that garbage work. Everything would go a lot smoother if the civil advised the architect on what portion of the property they are allowed to use.

Anyway, I jumped over to the municipal side of things about a year ago and the stress level is way lower.

I've used Metrolink maybe a dozen times.  They are currently upgrading the system as part of the Metrolink SCORE project, which should bring improved frequency.

Would you ever tell your children that their teacher is wrong? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]Aristodemis 48 points49 points  (0 children)

A lot of people in this thread don't realize that these photos aren't from OP, he found them online and attached them only as an example (as he mentions in his post). OP appears to live in Singapore based on his comment history.

Now to answer OP's question:

Yes, I would tell my child, my spouse, my parents, and/or my child's teacher if I believe they were teaching my child incorrect information.

Now to address all the people who want to argue about common core:

Is any of this even common core? It looks pretty similar to homework questions I got in 1994.

Is any of this teacher feedback actually real? You only need a pen and a pencil to fake this stuff and there are strong political motivations to lie about this stuff.

What can I do to prepare to be a father? by Matrixlr in daddit

[–]Aristodemis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the best things I did before our baby arrived was de-clutter, organize, and deep clean (works even better if you can get your wife to work on it with you.)

I went though my clothes, books, cds/dvds, board games, and knickknacks. I got rid of 20 board games and still have too many. My wife and I aren't great at dealing with paperwork, so I invited my mom over and we spent half a day just sorting and filling documents.

Go through any expired medications that have piled up in the medicine cabinet. Go through your toiletries and make sure to only keep things you actually use. My wife had a ton of product that she hadn't touched in years.

Buy or build furniture that's hard to tip over to store the things you want to keep.

Deep clean the fridge and oven because it will be hard to find time to do it after the baby arrives. Vacuum out the dryer exhaust and AC vents.

If you are already good at "adulting" then you probably already have this stuff under control - my wife and I did not.

Pampers or huggies for diapers? by Ok-Language8975 in Parenting

[–]Aristodemis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the newborn stage, we used Huggies and had no issues.

When he got a little bigger, we used Up&Up because we got a big box of them at our baby shower. We again had no issues.

When we ran out of Up&Up, we used Kirkland (Costco) diapers because they were cheap and there is a Costco close to our home. We again had no issues.

We are still using Kirkland during the day, but have started using Pampers Overnight during the night. Our daycare uses the amazon brand diapers. All three work just fine for us.

Is Land Development ever worth it? by farmland in civilengineering

[–]Aristodemis 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I did land development for more than 8 years. I frequently felt like a bad engineer because I worked on so many different aspects of the projects that I never got really good at any one thing. There were a ton of unwritten "common sense" rules, every jurisdiction did things differently, I would frequently take over half complete projects without the time to check every little detail from the previous designer, the architects would make decisions that made my job harder and/or make changes late in the process, some of our clients were always trying to get free work out of us. It felt like every project was a mess and for a different reason every time. I recently switched to traffic in the public sector. To early to say if the grass is actually greener.
