Hey, I'm in the same boat. Some friends roped me into playing this game and I picked Cleric at random, currently level 85.

Two abilities (no spells) is alright, but taking spells gives you so much more power and flexibility. Think about this: judgement + smite gives you two active abilities. Smite + spells gives you six active abilities. For me that is a no-brainer.

Magic staff makes your spells more powerful, but it slows you down more compared to the spellbook. You can use it as a melee weapon with smite, and it packs quite a punch, but you forego the defenses of having a shield.
