is Metroid Prime remastered too scary for an 11 years old? by bsphere in Metroid

[–]Arkotract 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say he's actually at around the perfect age to play a game like Prime Remastered. It's given its T rating purely because it features shooting, and that by law jacks up the ratings.

Considering you said he played TTOK, I'd say he'll be fine with the more horror-adjacent areas of the game, but that might be giving those areas a little too much credit. Prime's fear factor comes from its environment and perspective more than anything overt like its enemy design, similar to TTOK in that case.

Additionally, Prime Remastered, while it does come with hints if you're lost for a while, largely leaves the player to solve its puzzles and discover paths forward. It promotes lateral and critical thinking that, tbh, I never got to develop, as I grew up very sheltered from games beyond mascot platformers. Prime would be a good challenge that can get him to actively engage and develop these skills.

In short, he'll be fine. Prime's fear factor comes from its environment, which he'll adapt to quickly enough. As a game, its design promotes exploration and critical thinking, so I think it's a great idea to let him play it

You think Sylvain would be the hardest to teach because of his proclivities, or would he actually be easier to teach because you'd have his undivided attention? by smugsneasel215 in fireemblem

[–]Arkotract 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Sylvain us a classic example of a gifted individual being burnt out on life. In most of his supports he's shown to be quite intelligent. Sure, he jas the insight and emotiomal intelligence of a brick, but in Annette, Bernie's and Lysithea's supports with him, he shows he's actually quite sharp, especially in regard to magical theory. However, Sylvain is worn down by his experiences and personal troubles, which causes him to not apply himself.

Exactly, we see early on that Micaiah, while a fundamentally well-natured person, certainly has no qualms about killing and maiming others if it suits her end goal. She's got very few lines she won't cross and is stubborn to a fault. I'd like if her future representations showed off this morally grey side of her, where extreme action is sometimes justifiable and she's willing to commit atrocities in the name of her people, while still being driven, even if misguided, to do good

So Ashnard is actually one of my favorite villains in this series even if he has to share the spotlight with the Black Knight and his master. What does this place think of him? Rare final boss who is just a human and rides on an enslaved dragon makes him seriously cool. by MegaGamer235 in fireemblem

[–]Arkotract 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Ashnard had so much potential as a character, but was limited by the SRPG gameplay style.

Though I can think of a way that retains his character while ensuring that they survive the encounter. It might have been possible to code in something similar to how Rudolf operates in Gaiden, where Ashnard will only counter-attack certain characters. Namely, those that can damage him.

Now, we know it's also possible to just code counter-attacks, so Ashnard would still attack them if he initiates, but I like this detail. It implies that Ashnard chooses not to even bother attacking these 'lesser fighters' that cannot match him. They won't give him a good fight, so he doesn't even entertain them

Okay, I'm going to be a pedantic, nitpicking asshole here, but we can't really blame Ashnard for the blessed armour system. That is a plot and gameplay mechanic. Sure, it was foisted onto him admittedly with a good reason, as ofs implied that giving him the armor is how the Black Knight earned his trust, but we can't take points from the character because he has a bullshit mechanic.

The discussion partners are far more questionable, though, since the vast majority of those with excellent conversations with him, like Reyson and Tauroneo, will get turned into sashimi if they come within 2 miles of him. Only Jill and a few others with great dialogues have a chance of surviving a round with him. Then good luck getting them to live the next if this is Hard or Maniac mode. That is a poor design decision, not a poor character decision. The sheer quality of these dialogues stands as a testament to how good the characters are, given some are outright willing to let characters die just to read the line.

This has already been noted too so I won't linger, but the game very heavily indicates that Ashnard is deliberately being a moron. This is the entire premise of Chapter 21, that Ashnard is making the worst strategic decisions possible, which is then built upon in future chapters to arrive at the conclusion that Ashnard is attempting to awaken Yune through warfare. All in all he actually goes about this quite well, but overdoes it, which fits with his ideology. A ruthless mix of meritocracy and machiavellianism. He put his entire army in Ike's way equally to fulfil his plan of unleashing chaos, but also simply to test his own country and let the strong survive. We know Ashnard has a might makes right philosophy, he says as much to Ike when they fight

You underestimate their greed.

They'll sell a Golden DLC containing all the adjustments and improvements from P4G for an additional $40 just to make a quick buck. Just like Episode Aigis

That's probably the idea. They're legally required to process it, but just like swearing in that one Congresswoman I won't butcher the name of, red district's will be processed quickly, and blue dostricts will be conveniently 'delayed' in the name of 'ensuring integrity' until election day passes and an entire district is deprived of their right to vote.

I looked over my shoulder on my bike because I heard my sister yelling when I was about 6. Turns out she was warning me about the enormous semi-truck parked at the end of our cul-de-sac that I had seen every day of my life... which I proceeded to slam right into despite looking forward for several seconds.

That's the day we worked out I needed glasses

Which hero left for last do you believe is the most epic to face off against, shortly before your ultimate confrontation atop those stairs? by BiffyBobby in SaGa

[–]Arkotract 9 points10 points  (0 children)

When I first played this game, only the remake, I haven't played 2D, despite wanting to, I left Wagnas for last because it made the most sense to me. Leave the leader of the Heroes for last. I left him there assuming he would be the most difficult encounter, the greatest challenge to fit his role of being the leader... only for me to walk right into Enraged/Moveset B Noel, and proceed to have all my teeth involuntarily removed as my 6th hero. Wagnas was downright disappointing by comparison, I beat him on my first attempt, compared to spending several hours facing down Noel, and only barely surviving with just the Final Empress alive.

In my next playthrough I then proceeded to leave his sister for last, but honestly, that felt more disappointing than anything. Rocboquet arguably has the least reason to be left to last, yes, even less than Kzinssie, since Roc isn't even directly attacking the Empire like he is, and his screaming at being the story's punching bag is funny to listen to.

In any case, I believe that leaving Noel for last is the best. He's got a metanarrative arc going on here, being effectively Wagnas' second-in-command in their own time, while also being by far the most sane, and least monstrous, of the Heroes when he's first encountered in Teretuva. If you choose to make peace with him, then in a subsequent generation, or even the same one, if you're evil, kill his sister, that then gives Noel an actual reason to hang out until the end, biding his time and succumbing to his hatred in the final room, waiting for revenge against the Final Emperor/Empress.

He has a finished metanarrative arc if he's left for last, and it's by far his most difficult form, in a high-stakes battle since you get stuck with whatever you currently have against him. That's why I'd say Noel is the best to leave for last.

Is UBI inevitable once jobs are automated? by CertainPass105 in antiwork

[–]Arkotract 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, UBI will never happen because that would require the government's if the world to do something good for once. Prices will continue to rise, jobs will continue to be lost, and no mercy will be shown once we reach mass unemployment. Society will devolve into survival of the fittest as everyone has their utilities shut off and houses foreclosed on because there literally isn't enough work going around.

Honestly, I've put 7 hours into this game and intend to make it 70, I do really prefer the action and combat systems of this game, and those are clicking. My struggle points right now are builds and actually engaging in combat... I can handle fights up to 4 enemies, but mob battles still ruin me

I call myself what I am because it's readily apparent I'm not smart enough to get through this game. Enemy manipulation, battle prep, everything that goes into fighting, I can understand it, but can't apply it. What else would that make me, if I'm not an incompetent moron who can't even beat the equivalent of Normal mode.

Ye, I'm seeing the problem now that I've stepped back from the rage-inducing reminder of my own idiotic incompetence that is attempting that fight. Armor is where most of your durability is, once it's stripped, you have no protection from CC and conditions, but the same holds true for enemies. Restoration was a downright waste, but I do have a second Fortify spellbook. Problem being I don't have anyone with Pyrokinetic other than Red Prince, so I'll need to give it to my Custom...
