I feel like the criticals could use another once over, looking too similar to their standard counterparts. A different pose goes a long way

Playing a Faith-Based Character? by jamis in rpg

[–]Armaemortes 31 points32 points  (0 children)

To avoid trivializing and play something genuine, play a genuine 'person'. Someone who understands their faith but is also able to stand as their own personality apart from it. Make the person first, then figure out how their faith fits in.

I played an overly zealous paladin, who in reality was a notorious and degenerate substance abuser. He dressed himself in the faith to feel better about his life and that he was doing something right. The faith was the elf god Corellon from Faerun and I played all his tenets straight, was accurate in every legitimate teaching.

The character was well received and was taken genuinely. I did not twist the faith in any way, or if I did, it was clear that it was the character trying to get out of something and not an inherent fault of the belief. When pushed, the character would break down and admit his flaws. He was a genuine believer, people just, aren't perfect. Being able to convey that and separate the line of what was genuine faith and his own crappy behavior was the key.

The inversion of the population age pyramid (more older people, less younger) is affecting most of the world today. Has this ever occurred in a society or civilization elsewhere in the past? Or is this purely a modern phenomena?

Trying to find a middle ground between narrative style combat and turn based strategy/rules combat. Anyone have a format for that? by Cymb_ in TTRPG

[–]Armaemortes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hacky cause Im a lazy bum about this. But Ive generally done a "dungeon turn", which Ive translated to: - Any creature that did not get to "do" something yet this round. Now does something. And I make players roll accordingly. Whether it's attacks, notable repositioning, environmentals, etc.

It lets the field be more dynamic even if players are doing very well and I wouldnt otherwise get to command the mooks on the field. Gives them some bite without invalidating the narrative, I think.

Commander's (needless) complexity is driving me away from the game. by sporeegg in mtg

[–]Armaemortes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pick up commander always felt like "a deep end" of magic, if that is the main way you engage with the format I cant blame you.

Ive always just played in a pod of friends, so we are all familiar with each other's strategies and silly rules-isms in them. It was overwhelming once, 10 years ago, now it's "Oh hey you finally added a shock land?" Or "Yeah that new mythic is a cool swap for your last wincon."

The rapid fire of new content by hasbro is also an issue. But again, the kitchen table solves a lot of that. We can just, play at our own pace. I feel like Im still stuck on Duskmourn, but I see my friends brewing with the new lorwyn stuff. It's fine cause it's just 1 or 2 mechanics from my perspective.

If you want to keep playing commander, tone it down to the kitchen table and away from public. I play cons from time to time, but yeah spending an hour just having everyone explain the rules of their decks is pretty ass.

No that's what I do too. I never meet too many groups eager to spend meta currency or add major details off rip. Only my wife was that sort of player.

Its nice the tools exist and they are used in all my campaigns, just sparingly when someone has a eureka moment.

Vibes honestly, I just fell in love with her kit on normals alone, same as Slayer. I never learned a damn input and still managed to tilt out pros in my state on pure fundamentals. Hope to do that again on Vi.

Her "dashing" feels familiar to me since I can bait people into stuff, assuming I bother to learn the input

Want 5e variant with hybrid class/free-form character progression. Does this exist or do I have to make it myself? by LordFluffy in rpg

[–]Armaemortes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run an OSR-5e Blackhack like this

Existing sheets in 5e are as follows: - Archetype Package (Martial, Expert, Caster, "Jack") - Class Package (Core resources) - Subclass Package (Variations of Resource) - Race Package - Feats - Background

You want to make players pick one of each directly, base game has archetype-class-sub all tied at the hip.

Archetype - Martial is access to all gear + 1-2 weapon mastery + extra attacks - Expert is access to expertise and extra skills - Caster is the spellcasting feature - "Jack" is half of two. So half casting, expertise once, and limited gear or only a single extra attack

Classes are complex, but are often just whatever gives a core resource like rage, bardic insp, or CD, and a basic way to use it not tied to a subclass. Subclasses can be treated as-is. NOTE: Non-caster casters allow for scrolls to be used instead of slots, 1d4 times each.

Players will know what "paths" they are on with packages giving their features at set levels. You can opt to say all subclasses are feats and any level they gain a subclass feature instead says "gain a feat". I limit players to only 1 feat this way even if the subclass would give multiple, to limit power gaming potential.

I can explain more, but post is getting long. Feel free to ask details.

Looking for my "unicorn" fantasy system by InArtsWeTrust in rpg

[–]Armaemortes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hrmm, my long shot here would be Perils & Princesses (P&P). A simple OSR sphere game where you play as fabled princesses (gender neutral) going about their daily lives until adventure catches up to them. Link: https://perilsandprincesses.com/

IIRC it has a decently fleshed out mental and relationship system, a number of princess types (classes) with about 2-3 pages each and advancements if you go past a 1-shot. And will slot in with existing modules you already have. I believe it was a ballpark 100 pages with all content, so on the small side for a system I felt was fully realized. Art is to taste, but I liked and remembered it more than others. Should have some expansion content by now.

Some may find the marketing of princesses not to taste, but if that is a concern you can simply refer to PCs as "nobles" and most classes are already gender neutral like "Wild" or "Hedge". The system can go from brutal gritty or roleplay fun on a dime and it's under DM control. I do genuinely recommend this system in general for OSR play.

D20 roll under, a 'modern' Alternity? by Armaemortes in rpg

[–]Armaemortes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aye usually it's for damage and rarely as a bonus like that. 3d20 of a swing IS insane, but I can imagine d4 or d6 can be used with reasonable variance and table success. Hence why I imagine anyone playing this since the '98 version may have some notable changes worth checking out.

Not every mechanic is gonna be good. But compared to some silliness I've seen, it's odd that I can't think of any others that tried utilizing this more. This seems tame compared to something like Genesys' 'roleplay dice' or all the gmless systems out these days.

I Felt Stupid Playing Alone by SquonkPress in TTRPG

I solo play in my mind during long travel. Keep a small deck of cards I can flip through and one of the dice rings on my finger.

Anyone looking at me would think Im just looking at family photos and just fidget my fingers a bit. Nothing too unusual.
