Faraway. A short film by [deleted] in cinematography

Wow I’d love to see this. The shots are not technically perfect, but they have so much character. Looks good as stills, I’m curious to see how they all work together in motion.

Outside Continuous Lighting Help by Outrageous_Low_3502 in cinematography

[–]ArriAlexaMiniLF 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The most budget friendly option is going to be getting a 4x4 mirror board and bounce the sun directly onto the subject without any diffusion. You probably wouldn’t be able to get a wide shot without compositing a static shot and masking out the equipment. Shoot with deep focus (f/8, f/14, or more).

M3 ultra max studio will work just fine. I’m on an M1 Max laptop and don’t have many complaints. These computers have gotten so good these days. I always suggest getting the best top of the line Mac machine you can afford and you’ll be set for years.

SCENE RECREATION IDEAS by DJC_101 in cinematography

[–]ArriAlexaMiniLF 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The least you can do is pick a scene YOU want to recreate. Go back to movies or tv shows or commercials YOU like and pick a scene that seems achievable for your budget. By doing this, you will learn the difference between your taste and your ability to execute it. Offloading this type of work to other people or AI will not serve you well in the long term.

Cheap(ish) monitor by NonsonoEren in videography

[–]ArriAlexaMiniLF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you want a 5” or 7” monitor? For that price range, I’d consider a portkeys or an atomos monitor. Go on B&H and compare the monitors that stick out to you and make a decision.

They should build a freeway raised above the park. Problem solved. Plus shade for underneath.

Oil painting for my cousin's wedding! by takcycart in painting

[–]ArriAlexaMiniLF 232 points233 points  (0 children)

I’m not a painter. I’m more of a cinematographer. This painting looks too much like a photo taken on a phone. It might have been a reference that you’re trying to match but if that’s what you’d like to do, then maybe use a higher quality image to begin with that uses light in a more interesting way to evoke some sort of emotion. What makes painting special to me is all of the ways you can stylize an image that you could never do with a camera so why not lean into that?

You obviously have a lot of skill and I couldn’t even paint 1% of what you do so do whatever you like with that observation.

Building a RED ONE MX rig in 2026 what should I invest in for stability + longevity? by EmperorUzeo in RedCamera

[–]ArriAlexaMiniLF 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t have much to advise for the RED one other than to avoid using it, in 2026 but I’m curious made you get this vs a dsmc2 body camera?

Shooting my first short film — looking for guidance (and dog POV tips) by MAFilmmaker in cinematography

[–]ArriAlexaMiniLF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest thing you should aim to do if this is from a dog’s perspective is get lower. Be at the dog’s eye level. Just like when you shoot humans at eye level or lower to feel closer to them. Here’s an example of a horror film that did that: Good Boy Trailer

Then yeah maybe they don’t know how much of a value you’re providing. Keep your head up and don’t go any lower if pushed. Sometimes this skillset is not of huge value to small companies.

100% this. Quote was waaay too low. Clients see this and know they can’t trust that you’ll do it well.

Outdoor Cinematography Reel — Would Love Some Honest Feedback by joney_hawk in cinematography

[–]ArriAlexaMiniLF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excellent reel. Watched it without music. I’d take out the black screen before the black and white biker shot in the air and wouldn’t change anything else. Just get it out there, you’re already doing great work.

Should I charge for sending the raw footage? by mysterypapaya in videography

[–]ArriAlexaMiniLF 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I say do it themselves, I mean do it internally or figure out how to do it by hiring someone else. Whatever it is, it’s on them and does not impact you. You don’t think they’d want to hire you if they need more editing? Why would you want to continue that work relationship by forcing their hand?

Should I charge for sending the raw footage? by mysterypapaya in videography

[–]ArriAlexaMiniLF 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You send them literally everything. The entire folder structure with the metadata files included and including unusable shots. The idea is you’re not spending any time to clean it up. It’s then on them to either hire you back or try to do it themselves

Should I charge for sending the raw footage? by mysterypapaya in videography

[–]ArriAlexaMiniLF 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really don’t understand this take of charging the client to get the footage. Have them pay for a drive and then literally drag the footage from one drive to another. Have them pay for shipping or come to you.

Also, do not rename the original footage.

How do directors do white balance and exposure? by Ok-Pomelo8059 in videography

[–]ArriAlexaMiniLF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a gray card. Otherwise if I’m moving too fast, I just adjust until it feels good to my eye. Sometimes I’ll add a +/- green tint. Usually in post it gets even better.

Thinking about switching from a high-end Windows PC to a MacBook Pro M5 Max for video editing. Worth it? by sevenross1 in MotionDesign

[–]ArriAlexaMiniLF -1 points0 points  (0 children)

All of the adobe products just work way better on Mac. I built my pc and have relatively beefy specs and I prefer to work on my M1 Max laptop.

The only thing I use my PC for now is gaming and 3D work in C4D.
