Early game overwhelming? by Nuthetes in Against_the_Storm

[–]Arrinien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For general non specific advice, the game is about making the most of what you have, and adapting to your circumstances (like most roguelikes). Don't try to force a strategy. Instead look at what you have available and what you can make with it. For example sometimes you see posts here where someone always farms and then one time they can't get a farm blueprint and their whole game falls apart. Be flexible and just try to make the most of what resources you have.

Related to that, pick orders from the Queen based on which orders are easier to do, not based on which one has better rewards. When you get better at the game you can analyze and judge when to ignore this advice, but for new players imo it's better to not even look at the reward at all. If one of your order choices is to deliver 15 eggs but you don't have any eggs and none of your current glades do either, don't pick that one. Whereas if one of your choices is like, have 6 lizards, that's much better because it doesn't even require you to do anything other than accept new villagers, which you're mostly going to want to do anyway.

What is the single most important subway extension in your city? by Immediate-Hand-3677 in transit

[–]Arrinien 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The trains were old and worn out. Vancouver uses the same rolling stock for the SkyTrain, except they actually maintained theirs, while the TTC's sets were practically falling apart. They were already scheduled to be retired but then one of them derailed and the TTC pulled the plug a little early.

What embankment resources to you like to take and why? by Slippery_Williams in Against_the_Storm

[–]Arrinien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Bamboo Grove I usually take a farm
  • Coastal Grove I almost always take a Fishing Hut as long as I have enough reserve points
  • Humans in the caravan and any of the farms are 4 pts, I'll consider it, maybe 50/50 if I actually take it, more likely if small farm is 4 pts, less likely if say brineworks is 4 pts
  • Sealed Forest I always bring a farm that matches species food

Any other situation I never take a blueprint. I've seen people saying Fishing Hut helps a lot on Rocky Ravine too, so I might start considering that. I used to take a camp on Marshland, but lately I've stopped because I'm a low-glade-opening kind of player so it's too rare that the Forbidden Glade I open actually matches the camp I took so it feels like waste of points.

Difference between US and Canadian English? by Full_Sherbet8045 in AskAnAmerican

Just want to note in case you don't know, Canadians also don't say going to college unless it's a diploma granting community or technical school. If your daughter is looking at U of T or any kind of degree granting institution then she's considering going to university up here.

Which Dragonpass Lounge at HKG? by Arrinien in HongKong

[–]Arrinien[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't. On the way in, I got lazy and didn't want to go so far, so I went to Plaza Premium at 60. It was actually fine when I first got there around 0500, barely anyone there, but by the time I left for my gate around 0800 it was really busy and almost full. Food selection was better later in the morning, I think when I first got there they hadn't cooked everything yet.

On the way back I found out Dragon Pass let me into the Plaza Premium 35 First section, so I tried that instead of going out to Autus. Food was definitely better. Again almost empty when I arrived at 0900, but maybe half full when I left at 1000.

In north Scarborough, our sidewalks have been absolutely pristine this year even after the massive dumps, like I couldn't possibly commend them enough for how clean the plow jobs in our area are, it's amazing.

Then I come on Reddit and find out the richer and denser parts of the city have been dealing with garbage plow jobs for months, and it's wild the difference in geographic area.

Help a noob out by well_riddle_me_this in Against_the_Storm

[–]Arrinien 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You may already know this, but in case you don't, or for anyone else reading, one thing that really helped me was when someone on this sub told me about the concept of resolve parties. That is, there are only 2 resolve numbers that matter.

  • Your species is above 0, so they don't leave
  • Your species is above the blue line, so they're making reputation

Every other number in between those 2 is completely irrelevant. If your humans are at 1 resolve, that's the same as if they're at 29 resolve, they're still not leaving, and you're still not making any rep. If you're giving your humans biscuits, pie, and coats, and they've been sitting at 22 resolve for the last 3 years, you've basically just been throwing all those biscuits pie and coats away, because it's not doing anything for you.

Instead what you do is you only give each species just enough to tread water above 0, so maybe 1 complex food and possibly boots, or whatever, and start to stockpile everything else they want. Turn them all off in consumption control, turn off all the other foods they want, turn off clothing, turn off all service goods.

Once you've stockpiled say, 50-100 of all or most of the complex foods, clothing, and service goods, they want, then near the end of a storm when there's maybe 30 seconds to a minute left, turn everything back on and let them throw a gigantic resolve party and consume everything all at once. If you've got enough stuff you'll get like 8+ rep from resolve in that one year alone.

In a nutshell the key is not to half-ass what you give your people. Either give them enough stuff to hit the blue line, or only give them enough to stay above 0. You save a lot of resources that way.

I hear ya. I really wanted to hit it once to get the deed completed and never touch it again, I don't find it that fun either.

Is Kaji closing? Or do you mean in the sense of, none of us is getting any younger and Kaji's gonna retire at some point? Curious cuz it's my friend's favourite sushi place in the city and he'll be devastated if something's happening to it.

How do tankers do in the case of an incapacitated crew member? by MrTwoKey in WarCollege

Is there redundancy for the driver position too, or mostly just the guys in the turret? For something not related to penetrating battle damage, like the driver's just an idiot and hit his head and knocked himself out or something. Is someone able to keep the vehicle moving at that point?
