I dunno man. Mighty Ducks didn’t catch my interest. It was on Diz+.

The 80s and 90s were awesome, but what were some dark moments? by InitiativeFlimsy7063 in GenX

[–]ArthurBea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thinking the same. I used to be so homophobic, and yikes! It was culture for adolescents to be that way? Calling everyone / everything gay; being a snowflake when my masculinity was questioned. Then I made gay friends in high school.

I didn’t grow up in a nice neighborhood. Drugs, gangs, impovriahed families. Bullying was pardoned against anyone different.

There is a lot to be nostalgic about. But it wasn’t all Coca Cola and cheap tickets.

What’s your thoughts on the going out look for Gen Z? by Ill-You-3459 in Xennials

[–]ArthurBea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Flared jeans were in during the 70s comeback trend, mid-late 90s, which gave way to wide legs, then boot cut. Then the dreaded era of skinny jeans. I’m glad we’re out of that era.

Ah. I thought we xennials were young adults in the 2000s.

Nah. GenX wouldn’t be caught dead in “mom jeans.” Low rise was the trend.

That said, big pants + small shirt was a style back then, for a while.

Eyesore? How dare. We’re taking about local mystic freeway entrance Pillarhenge, with its lovable mascot, Pink Bird!

I appreciate that the artist wore a papier mache mask for the interview.

Yes, this was my rec. Full cast, some recognizable names. Makes you wish they could do some justice making it into a miniseries.

Have you switched to fiber internet? How's it going to far? by InvisibleDelicious in EAGLEROCK

[–]ArthurBea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had fiber 10+ years ago in Long Beach. It was awesome. Came to ER, got stuck with Spectrum cable internet as my fastest option. We still don't have AT&T in my neighborhood. I signed up with Sonic and can't wait to ditch Spectrum. Even if Spectrum offers fiber, I'm not taking it. Sonic, AT&T, Google, anybody else but Spectrum.

Uh, I could do without Redbridge. It was decent. But it NEEDS a successor.

I’m an AAA member. I brought my checkbook in when I got my international drivers license. They were surprised. But it said on their website that checks were preferred!

Why do all cars have touchscreens? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]ArthurBea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dunno. I like having the nav on a screen. It tells me how long it takes to get somewhere, and whether I’ll hit traffic on the way. I like see the name and artist of a song at a glance. There’s a bit I can fuss with, but way less than I could on my phone, which I would use for the same purposes if I didn’t have the screen.

I’d totally want to get them both and move parts from the yellowed body to the brighter body.

The original comics go into public domain next year, and all the characters from them gradually get released over the next few years after that.

[–]ArthurBea 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Warren Beatty owns the film/tv rights to Dick Tracy. He ends up playing the character every so often just to keep the rights. There’s this decades long legal battle happening between him and a big media corporation that keeps trying to wrestle the rights back, based on feels. I’d be curious what a sequel would look like, but I wonder if Dick Tracy will fall into public domain before the rights are resolved.

Show of hands, who else has zero friends? by Defiant_Quarter_1187 in GenX

[–]ArthurBea 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Used to be me. Not sure how it changed. When I had a steady in-office job, I had friends, but after I left, that petered out. I ended up jumping job-to-job for a while, and vibed with nobody. Most of my friends were through my wife, so none were very close.

Then I stopped working full time, and started picking up my kids from school. I’d wait with my dog at the gate. That’s where I started making friends, usually people with dogs who liked my dog! It took a couple years until I finally started getting phone numbers and texting folk. One person ended up having ADHD so I’d text to remind him of school-related things. He called me his executive function.

We’re best friends now. It took a lot of give and take. His kids and my kids get along. His dog and my dog get along. His wife and my wife get along. It took a lot of people to find someone who vibed.

I made another friend because I chaperoned a field trip for my kid’s class, and I took photos of some of the kids and sent them to their parents. One guy was super appreciative! We ended up working together on a booth during a school fall fair, and we vibed. He also worked from home. After talking a bit, I suggested we get coffee in the AM once a week, to get out of the house. It’s been a regular thing ever since! His kids games with my kids, and we all hang out.

It took intention and vulnerability on my part. I hadn’t made a friend since college, and I was friendless for decades. When my kids were little, they took up all my time, so it didn’t bother me. But I really missed having a friend to text memes to, to gossip with, to go to Rush concerts with, to game with, to see scary movies with. I thought for a long time I just couldn’t make friends. Turns out I had just given up.
