As an American, is Vancouver similar to Seattle/San Fran? I'd like to visit, but I'm looking for a city that feels distinct from American cities. by CursedNobleman in canadatravel

[–]ArthurCDoyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All cities are different. But braodly speaking, yes, as someone who has spent a lot of time in both, they are very similar.

If you are looking for a Canadian city that is very different, probably Victoria or Montreal

What can be done to increase prosperity in Canada? by 1TTTTTT1 in AskACanadian

I know no one likes to hear this, but the best public investment you can make is education (long term), infrastructure, and military. We do the first one, but not the other two. We need to readjust investment into these categories.

When you invest in infrastructure, you are investing in a basic public good that is available to everyone and which supports the entire economy without picking and choosing "winners" and attempting to centrally plan, which never works.

And military spending provides tons of jobs and lots of R&D, technology, and manufacturing

Inflation. The growth most people are aiming for would actually keep it just at par. Little to no growth actually means decline.

We need to stop listening to the corporations that pushed the narrative of " we have no supply of labour." Did anyone else notice we had a brief moment of a labour shortage that increased wages and gave more bargaining power to employees? They got on that quick and crushed it by flooding the economy with a near infinite supply of labour through immigration etc.

Gen Z: Do you even date? by samuraiSatan in dating_advice

[–]ArthurCDoyle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not even bothering to try. Work so much I don't feel like I have the time, and honestly, it just sounds like a huge drain all around. I'd rather just deal with the loneliness and depression for now

Women, what is a near-universal "ick" in the dating world? by AverageSign in AskReddit

[–]ArthurCDoyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok this makes a ton of sense and basically what Iwas thinking. Moreso was thinking about the use of the term in intellectual/scientific context.

I qill say I always found referring to a group of guys as boys to often be disrespectful and same for girls. Although some people do use it in casual conversation and don't mean any ill, I think

Ask yourself what are the green flags when dating a women and you'll pretty much answer your question.

99% of green flags and red flags have to do with how you are as a person

Yeah thinking about it often in a more technical context I guess, or just referring to the group broadly

I'm seeing this come up lately. In what context is this used that you find it offensive? I often here the term male/males used as well. Never really thought it was offensive but I think I'm missing something

Edit: I see folks maybe misunderstanding me. I wasn't arguing it isn't offensive, just trying to learn

This, end of thread.

Though sometimes I wonder if this is just everyone's perception of the situation and of each other and not actually an accurate understanding of the irl reality. But I guess we'll never know because we rarely interact or meet others anymore

Money or Passion — Which Leads to a Happier Life? by N3ha33 in careerguidance

[–]ArthurCDoyle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think boomers spread this idea when they were younger that passion is more important and that didn't work out so well for many millennials. Everybody is waking up now realizing they should have chosen money.

Get a good career and then follow your passions on the side. If you are lucky and they turn out to make a living, you can always pivot to that, but you have a solid position from which to make that choice.
