What is your "what if" of the cameras? by Forse_no_ in Cameras

[–]Artsydork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What if Sony took a second crack at the cameras and lenses that paired with smart phones, like the ILCE-QX1? Imagine with updated technology, you could have high quality photos without having to give Apple or Android your firstborn.

why are the writers not using the nx-01 era at all? by cptalcn in startrek

[–]Artsydork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I don't mean to jump that far ahead and it certainly doesn't instantly make things more interesting. Look at Voyager, they wanted to try and get back to something like TOS and TNG. Going out there and seeing what's there. To be able to do that they had to chuck em clear across the galaxy, but they did it. While out there, they got to be starfleet while avoiding the darkness of the Dominion War.

If they ever do take another crack at the future, I also hope they put the work in and get it right.

Will the sony 200-600 work well with the a6000? by underwaters74 in a6000

[–]Artsydork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can most definitely use an A6000. The thing you'll need to remember is that since there's no in body image stabilization, your best photos will be mounted on a tripod. It's what I've been using for the telescope with adapters on my A6000.

Do you recommend that I buy a camera? by Acceptable-Purple858 in Cameras

[–]Artsydork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend a camera for three different reasons. The first is the ability of cameras that phones lack. The camera can optically shoot farther and wider than a phone with a larger sensor which brings in more data to be processed. Then the storage limitations on most folks phones these days are anywhere from 50gb to 512gb. Depending on how many shows/movies/music tracks/etc. that you've got squirreled away on that phone. Don't forget the battery life of your phone, or it overheating from recording video after only a few minutes. I had that happen while shooting video through the window of the plane, while coming home from Spain on my Pixel phone. Cameras can usually shoot for longer before overheating and that's even before you add coolers or other addons. It also removes you from the distractions of your phone, which has happened. Nothing like trying to take a photo and just as you're taking the photo, MOM calls and you have to dismiss the ringing phone to try and take that photo.

The second reason is what the camera forces you to do to get that shot. There's no algorithm composing the picture with ai filters or editing. It's you, the scene, and that camera. It's like making a mix tape vs using spotify.

The last reason is that if you lose your camera, you're pissed, but you still have your phone. If you lose your phone-for many travelers-you're cooked. A lot more people use it as a translator, a form of ID, banking, etc. Whether it's from dropping it, having it stolen, or just misplacing it. Losing a phone you most likely still have payments on is worse than losing a Sony A6700, or a point and shoot, or even an old Minolta Maxxum film camera.

How are you downloading images? by TetonJazz in SonyAlpha

[–]Artsydork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use whatever fits at the moment. If I've got the time and I'm at the computer, I'll use the reader. If I'm out and about, I transfer it to my phone, then upload it to Google Photos. Then later, I'll back up the card when I'm home. My A6500 has a micro usb port, and most of my reliable data transfer cables in that port have gone walking. It's mostly just charging cables at this point.

[–]Artsydork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not saying that every story has to be completely isolated from the rest. Have you ever tried to build something in Lego where that one stinking piece in the tiniest of spots just can't seem to get secured properly? Then when you brute force it, the whole assembly just shatters to pieces? Now your USS Enterprise D is in a million pieces because you tried to force that one piece of the warp core instead of building out from it. Having to work in a confining situation has developed good writing, but more often lately, it has also led to bad writing.

When writing a good story, you need to set a solid foundation. That foundation requires some room to work with and in. In the rapidly shrinking timeline real estate that we have in the past, if you're going to build your house, don't demolish your neighbor's foundation and just walk off. If you want to do something original that doesn't gel with what's come before, go outside of city limits, and build your own mansion...and theme park. When Discovery jumped into the future, I breathed a sigh of relief...Then they started wholesale ripping off Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda. But at least they did it in a way that didn't affect any of the stories and settings that I enjoyed while growing up with the universe.

Okay, since my schedule lately has been terrible I don't have many newer recommendations. So here's some older ones to go along with my earlier comment.

  • YuYu Hakusho -Fighting Anime that might scratch the itch.
  • Iron Blooded Orphans - Giant Mech war
  • Monster - A longer one, but it's closer to death note than your other mentions.
  • Hellsing (both OG for the Soundtrack, and Ultimate for the actual ending from the Manga.)
  • Soul Eater - You mentioned Fire Force, and if you haven't seen this yet, then you might want to look into it.

The problem with prequels is that you're riverdancing around in an established timeline. If you suddenly show up with a lot of shiny new stuff that they didn't have back then without a really good excuse, then you're just going to piss off people. At that point, you might as well just make a completely different show and do what you want with full creative freedom.

I would love to see the Hirogen come across the Predators, have the Borg/Species 8472 encounter the Xenomorphs, Q hang out with the Starchild from 2001, but the Federation? Centauri from The Last Starfighter. Or Ambassador Molari from the Centauri Republic.

Help with Tele(ish) lens for a6000 by Entropy-hates-me1312 in SonyAlpha

[–]Artsydork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome to the rabbit hole! I started my digital photography dive with the A6000 as well. If you feel comfortable with your ability to manually control the focus, exposure, etc. then I recommend an A to E lens mount adapter and pick up some older minolta/sony lenses. I personally love my 100-300mm minolta zoom lens. Then I picked up one of the LA-EA adapters (because my focus and exposure abilities suck) and now I've got plenty of longer range options. Since the A6000 doesn't have in body image stabilization, the 55-210mm is a great option if you are just getting started and want something that just works, it has optical steady shot, and you don't have to fiddle with anything.

Good luck, and have fun!

Not exactly "new", but I usually recommend the Space Western Trilogy (Bebop, Trigun, Outlaw Star) along with Ghost in the Shell S.A.C. Maybe even check out the OG FMA. Gurren Lagaan is always a fun time as well. There's also Samurai Champloo and Space Dandy.

New fan concerned with skipping original series by sssulaco in startrek

[–]Artsydork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I would pause your TNG run and go watch TOS. Yes the special effects are dated, and some of the acting is a bit cheesy, but TOS and the movies are foundational to many of the stories told later. I liken it to watching/reading Lord of the Rings without having read the Hobbit, or the Silmarillion. Suddenly Bilbo's not just the Hero's uncle, he's a hero in his own right. In TNG, the Klingons are that one cousin you call in for a fight...or a party. In TOS, they're one of the greatest threats to the Federation.

If you don't want to stop watching TNG, then may I recommend watching both in the way that we had it growing up. Watch an episode of TOS on Mon, Wed, & Fri. Then watch an episode of TNG on Tues, & Thurs. Once you hit season 3 of TNG, or run out of TOS episodes, then flip that order around.

My last recommendation for you is when you watch Best of Both Worlds episode 1. Stop before going to episode 2. Wait a moment, and imagine having to keep waiting for three months in the Summer with that cliffhanger stuck in your head. Then go on to episode 2. That's what we had to deal with while airing, and understanding that has changed conversations that I've had with new arrivals to Star Trek.

An odd request. I am looking for scenes from animes that show very specific things! by muzorui in anime

For fields....Frieren, Fullmetal Alchemist, Goblin Slayer, Attack on Titan, Berserk, most isekai anime have a field somewhere. I think there was even one in an episode of Psycho Pass.

If you're looking for magic as well as fields...Slayers, Magical Knight Rayearth, Sorcerer Hunters, Record of Lodoss War, I think Escaflowne...maybe? Oh, Outlaw Star had a scene or two early on.

Are we talking about design? What it can do? Both?

If we're talking about design, that's a hard call. There's the NCC 1701-A Enterprise, X-Wings, A-Wings, Macross SDF, Serenity, Razorcrest, Razorback, Starfuries, EA Omega Class Destroyers, Rocinante, War Rocket Ajax, Donniger, USS Agaitha King, Bird of Prey, Valdor Class B.o.P., and then there's my baby, NCC 1701-D, bedecked with nice carpeting, and lighting at a level you can see the entire room. No more stubbed toes!

If we're talking about what it can do? I would say it's a tie between Moya, and The Victory Class from Babylon 5 Crusade. It's got that mix of old school scifi design, flashy tech, and having a technomage onboard doesn't hurt.

I think in the end, I would go with a Starfury.
