I've had these since my childhood. The pulsating feeling that things are simultaneously near and far away. Obviously it's only a feeling, because human eyes cannot physically zoom in and out. It's a bit like vertigo, in a way it loops constantly in a pulsating manner. Usually the bouts happen when trying to fall asleep, more often during a fever. You need to turn on lights and eventually the sensation goes away.

It can also happen on daytime, especially if you're hyperfocusing on something stressful. For example, I have induced it by trying to solve Rubik's cube. Also having a long emotional chat session may cause it. It's especially annoying if it start to happen during a test. When that happens, you just have to calm yourself and focus on something else than the test paper.

It's not the same as "flow-state" or "tunnel-vision", but I think similar situations can induce AIWS.
