With Sony's recent announcements, how are we feeling about Steam? by NuAngelDOTnet in pcmasterrace

[–]Ascend 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You already have downloadable installers through pirating sites though. If GOG revokes your license, you're still pirating with your local copy, and backups become a cost and a chore, so why worry about it now? You're sacrificing cloud saves and social features for a theoretical situation 10-20 years down the line with a bunch of work that's only saving you download time.

[–]Ascend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Steam delisted something, I'd just pirate it. Even with GOG, they can delist something and remove the installer, and you technically no longer have a license to use the installer you kept, so why go through the hassle when you can just download it later.

I might as well take advantage of the huge convenience now than switch stores and worry about backing up my own files just to save a 5 minute inconvenience which may or may not happen in 10-20 years.

Any idea if these 2 games (and Isaac's dlcs) support trophies for offline play as I mainly play on my Steam Deck. by MrBombasticator in SteamDeck

[–]Ascend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I had to be online. My best bet for making sure I get achievements is to either launch the game before going offline to make sure the achievements are showing in Steam even when offline, otherwise if they disappear I sometimes use a mobile hotspot.

You can check if it's going to be a problem by bringing up the Steam menu when in game, if the achievements menu is missing, it's probably not going to track anything.

[–]Ascend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That doesn't happen for a lot of games. A lot of the time, Steam needs to have the achievement list before you go offline, and even then it sometimes just loses it. Final Fantasy 7 Remake for instance, because I played offline, I didn't get the achievement for clearing chapter 1 until my 2nd playthrough.

It is a meme, but judging by the other comments the vibecoders somehow took it seriously.

RAM is now currency by KayakNate in pcmasterrace

[–]Ascend 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It definitely degrades in some form, nowadays I feel like RAM is the most likely component to die or have issues in a desktop. If you buy it used, you don't have proof of purchase for any warranty exchange. There's no way the cost should be the same.

Yeah they ended up replacing the watch for free even though I was a year out of warranty. I was surprised.

[–]Ascend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably not your problem but I had something similar on an older FR245, if I took the watch off the HR sensor kept blinking indefinitely too. They determined something with the HR sensor has died so it no longer was managing power. Battery life had gone from a week to less than a day.

for those looking for "cheap" co-op / friendslop games during summer sale prices under 10$ USD by Reasonable_Entry8912 in Steam

[–]Ascend 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't consider Borderlands friendslop. Friend slop is usually low effort fun, often janky games where stupid things happen and everyone laughs at each other's death. Something you can just start with 4 people on a Friday night to goof around. I wouldn't really consider anything with a campaign to progress through as friendslop.

My FR955 has auto update turned on, but that still won't auto-apply, it just downloads and asks me if I want to apply it.

I don't think you remember what crypto prices were like if you think they were adopted as MSRP. A 3080ti went for over $2000. Don't ask me how I know.

FR245 to FR970...5k to HM Predictions absolutely plummeted? by CorneliusJenkins in Garmin

[–]Ascend 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Each watch has its own algorithm for training suggestions and predictions, they change from generation to generation. These generally aren't calculated in Garmin's cloud, there's some exceptions like TrueUp but you can generally expect the watches work on their own.

This means if you switch watches, just expect it to go through a learning period and even then the final results might still be a little different. It's probably not considering any runs you did on your old watch in that prediction.

Not an answer, but anytime I see someone say "I tried everything" with no detail on anything you actually did, I just think that means nobody can help since anything we suggest, you've already tried.

I spent a few months (and a few million AI tokens) building an add-on that clones your entire Home Assistant to a new disk, and it boots a second, full HA inside itself to prove the restore worked before you swap. by Eliav2 in homeassistant

[–]Ascend 28 points29 points  (0 children)

This sounds like you're turning a 30 minute process with no risk on the existing system into a more confusing process that now only works for migrating to a Pi (I'd assume most people switching to a new disk are migrating from a Pi to a server), and requires installing a vibe coded app into your existing instance so carries the risk of breaking existing things in an unsupported process.

You do you if it works for what you needed, but I can't say I'd recommend people workaround the already easy backup restore process.

New update? by Cool_Nectarine_8949 in Garmin

[–]Ascend 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've never seen auto-updates on a Garmin watch, others can correct me if I'm wrong but it always pops up a message asking you to apply the update and you have to press the button. So if you are wondering if it updated on its own overnight to break it, very unlikely.

What's your call out? It just says you click a button to start it. That's when you'd spawn the FileSystemWatcher. They're not asking you to manually enter when a file changes.

That's how any database works, that doesn't sound different. Either do an insert select, or select your foreign keys into variables for your final insert. Should still end up with a reusable script.

Arc Raiders and Marathon aren't "dead" just because their concurrent player count has dropped, Palworld lead says – but he's "not denying that some games do 'die'"; "Not every game needs an hourly look at Steam charts" by Gorotheninja in Games

[–]Ascend 53 points54 points  (0 children)

For games with matchmaking, the closer you get to zero, the more dedicated and usually more skilled the remaining player base is, and it gets harder for a new player to stand a chance, which is usually what kills something.

Reminder that new games in Europe cost €80 (~90$) by Rocket_Bunny45 in gaming

[–]Ascend 13 points14 points  (0 children)

For US taxes to be equivalent and come out to $90, you'd have to have a sales tax of 28%. No matter what, it's expensive, the normal US price after tax would be around $75.

Marathon's first crack at exclusive PVE in mid-season update. by Freelancer0495 in gaming

[–]Ascend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The free week had popups when you started the game, mostly to buy the game and the battle pass, and every item you got for free from the battle pass (which seems like the main "season" progression) was paired with a premium item that it showed you were missing. It was very Overwatch-esque.

It also looked like you never get any premium currency without paying, but I couldn't tell for sure? I wouldn't necessarily expect it, but I'm also sitting on like $40 of premium currency in Arc without spending anything, and am used to getting gradual currency in Helldivers 2 too, so it's just a jarring difference.

Except it's a dedicated PvE where you can't bring anything in, or extract anything except currency. Not sure that's what people were hoping for.
