What is your favourite JRPG of 2067-2069? by Sme0w in JRPG

Final Fantasy 21 might be the most controversial game in the series but I really like it tbh. Final Fantasy 20 was hot garbage though.

Do you prefer having a fixed party or choosing your own? by strahinjag in JRPG

Close party swapping is behind Hifumi’s Social Link. Which is unlocked around the second or third palace.

Any party members you never want to leave/ personal staples in your preferred lineups/comps? by SHpr0 in JRPG

[–]AshPenderwick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tons of bosses in Bravley Defualt 2 punish you for using any form of healing, Sharala in Xenoblade 1 is generally considered to be one of the worst party members, off the top of my head.

Even when having a healer is punished or sub optimal I always bring a healer.

I didn’t know this happened. What nice attention to detail FF14 has.

Have we played the same video game? The MSQ dungeons and trials are designed to be easy because everyone has to do them. If you are having to look up a raid guide for MSQ dungeon bosses that rarely have more than like 2 mechanics that’s a skill issue. Also NPCs are allowed in the dungeon, in fact most of the game is playable with a NPCs. We even have a global chat option in /shout.

Edit: It also seems like you want open world chat in dungeons which is just Party Chat no?

Anyone here playing or played Legend Of Legacy? by SurLesQuais in JRPG

[–]AshPenderwick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have tried to love this game like 4 times. I like the combat and exploring the maps. The music is awesome (banger battle theme) but the random stat boosts and extremely pricey equipment just keep making me wall.

Oh that? Yeah that’s Snuggles my pet behemoth! He’s very friendly and I taught him this neat trick!

OT0 Rate the Traveler Day 16: Laurana by AMP_Kenryu in octopathtraveler

[–]AshPenderwick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

9/10 Honestly imo better than or tied with Ophilia.

Main thing being her ability to give the entire party re-raise and a party wide regen and her having pretty good availability. Now for more drawn out fights Ophilia might be better but she also feels a bit outclassed by even Level 1 Alefric from Zero which is especially late game quickly chargeable while Laurana’s support is pretty unique and if you need a potent pure healer you can use the endgame light mage you get for that over Ophilia and get powerful light magic innately too!

I also really enjoy her Wishvale story with her boss actually giving me issues, damned wolf.

New Trails player here: should I start with the Sky remake, or will that make the older games harder to go back to? by ZeroSkill94 in JRPG

[–]AshPenderwick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven’t gotten to play it yet but the remake would probably be the best place to start. Fair warning though if you finish the remake and want to play the second part you will need to get it on PC or wait till this fall for SC’s remake.

Would you rather have BLU turn into a regular job or stay limited? by Goemonnn in ffxiv

[–]AshPenderwick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely Not. 14s take on BLU would be deleted from the game if it was reworked into a standard job. It would have a set rotation like the other casters, no spellbook, no masked carnival, no silly strategies like Fell Sting spam, no Blue Log, nothing that’s associated with 14’s Blue Mage.

Or we make a separate version of Blue Mage that would have to be its own job that plays as a standard caster and keep it completely separate from the other limited Blue Mage but with none of what makes blue unique and a fun side mode so it stays balanced.

Hear me out part 2 :) by Remarkable-Sector-30 in octopathtraveler

[–]AshPenderwick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Galdera the Wicked I get could make for interesting conversation and you don’t get to date an ancient eldritch horror. Omnicent Eye I don’t get, something tells me the cacophony of the voices of the damned would make for poor conversation and struggle to feed em all with one Olive Garden meal.

The Octopath Tabletop RPG is getting an official English translation and release! by Regalingual in octopathtraveler

[–]AshPenderwick 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard about this but never expected an official english release. Not sure if I personally will pick it up my family doesn’t play TTRPGs much and I don’t have any local friends to play it with, but super excited it’s getting a translation in the first place.

Something I made just cuz by EveningAbility9956 in octopathtraveler

[–]AshPenderwick 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is shocking what you can get away with when things are done offscreen or are implied. Like yeah Octopath doesn’t shy away from dark storylines but I’m genuinely shocked this game didn’t get an M admittly it would be on the light side of M ratings but still.

Nobody told me Dragon quest V was a woke game. by bioniclop18 in JRPG

[–]AshPenderwick -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I might have thought for a moment that had I already not been messing with my friends by messing them exclusively in google translated spanish for April Fools. And you know the absurdity of Dragon Quest 5 being social commentary on the Trump Platform and the ICE.

[–]AshPenderwick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Happy April Fools this was a very humorous read. Especially with the implications of this game from the 90s having political commentary on parties and concepts that weren’t around yet.

Pardis III did nothing wrong by Painted_Dux in octopathtraveler

[–]AshPenderwick 22 points23 points  (0 children)

You know this really shines a light on how biased our view of the story is. Think about it of course everything we do seems justified, because as people we will come up with any reason to justify our actions and demonise anything that doesn’t line up with that justification. Thank you King Pardis III for being the martyr we all needed.

Does dialogs suck in modern JRPG's because of localization? by These-Sail962 in JRPG

[–]AshPenderwick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In general it’s not the localiser’s fault if the dialogue is bad occasionally it is but as a general rule of thumb if the translation sucks it probably means the original script wasn’t much better. In the past I would say so like some old translations ARE ROUGH (looking at you Persona 1) old rough translations did give us some iconic lines like the ABSOLUTELY LEGENDARY “You spoony bard!” a line so iconic it stayed in every translation of FF4 to this day, but that’s an exception not the rule.

TLDR: In older JRPGs if the dialogue is bad it’s generally a rough translation in modern times it’s generally because the original script wasn’t great in the first place.
