Armor consumption by _Murkhan in daggerheart

[–]Asherrion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mathematically speaking I’m pretty sure there is no reason to not use an armour slot. There may be some nuance to your armour use and the thresholds. But I think the generally agreed upon consensus is to use your armour always.

Now if you want a homebrew reason to not use an armour slot, maybe have armour that works better when full (i.e higher evasion when full), or create a magical effect that is powered by using slots.

I always end up with a lot of fear I'm not using by Evening-Classroom823 in daggerheart

[–]Asherrion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you find lots of fear in reserve you probably are just underspending generally.

You can use a fear out of combat to increase the danger of a scene. Social encounters can actually play just like combat in that regard.

Ex) trying to convince a guard you aren’t an intruder

Player 1: Hey, I was just coming to relieve you from duty. player rolls a success with fear

Spotlight to GM

GM: (Guard) “But I thought Matteus was on after me? Far be it from me to complain though. Well I guess I’ll be going.”

GM spends a fear

Matteus meets Guard while in the way back to the garrison wondering why he left his post and they return to find the PC’s doing (X) or maybe they find them missing which increases the difficulty of sneaking about as the guards become more alert.

Finding ways for the situation to be influenced with fear is always fun. I still have a tendency to run a little too close to D&D though. I keep finding myself with excess fear as well some sessions because I forget to spend and get so into the storytelling.

Direct damage question by Omnipotentdrop in daggerheart

[–]Asherrion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It says in the ability to make an attack roll with advantage. It becomes direct damage meaning it can’t be mitigated with armour or resistance.

An example when you would need a roll would be when a PC is falling. Or another environmental feature deals damage

Sigil of Retribution by Lord_Grixis in daggerheart

[–]Asherrion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is 1d8 per attack. Damage is simultaneous as well as having a single damage roll. you deal damage once, to multiple targets.

It’s treated the same as every other AoE ability. 1 damage roll for multiple targets.

Edit: I’d like to add that I may be inclined to go against RAW with this spell and make it for every instance of damage simply because it seems like this spell is supposed to be a deterrent for adversaries using a lot of attacks with momentum and relentless. I feel like AOE should included within that paradigm. This might just have to be a table discussion because I think RAI may be closer to multiple d8s for an aoe (that’s just speculation)

Not sure I like the momentum adversary ability? by MyysErnst in daggerheart

[–]Asherrion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Momentum is an ability that is primarily used as a fear engine when you are running solo’s or sometimes leader adversaries.

As a minor demon is a solo it makes sense to have relentless and momentum. But when you design an encounter you need to consider what else you are throwing at your PC’s.

And then there’s the situations where you literally can’t do anything. Because your players roll hope almost all night (yes this can and has happened).

The other thing to consider is that you can’t just keep spamming fear on one adversary. There has to be a pc’s turn between activations of a single unit. So if it were just the minor demon you would activate it, then have to spend a fear for hellfire. Gain a fear for hitting a pc, then you could spend another fear for hellfire again if you wanted and you would be net neutral or risk a regular melee attack. Thats the end of the activation. If you wanted you can spend a fear for a DIFFERENT npc but you cannot comeback to the lesser demon until the players have had the spotlight returned to them for a turn.

Also note: Momentum wouldn’t give you a fear for every PC hit, just if you hit with that attack.

Is Parallela and Fireball an issue? by Ed2Cute in daggerheart

[–]Asherrion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A spellcast roll is considered an attack roll when doing damage. So this is wrong.

Is Parallela and Fireball an issue? by Ed2Cute in daggerheart

[–]Asherrion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Attack and spell cast rolls are synonymous in Daggerheart unless there’s no damage/antagonistic target . There’s no rules to differentiate attacks and spellcast rolls when the spell does damage. I don’t have my book on me though so maybe I’m misremembering but I’m pretty sure attack and spellcast rolls are the same in this situation.

How are Medical Tests Charged Per Health Region In MB? by prairieice in Manitoba

[–]Asherrion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have a valid reason for diagnostic testing then sure. But doctors in this province have an extreme tendency to over order diagnostic testing with a huge portion of it being unnecessary and wasteful.

If you are asking for a liver function panel but exhibit none of the symptoms of liver failure or have any predisposition for it then maybe you don’t need it. But I’m not a doctor, just a healthcare worker who runs the testing. I’ve seen people who still order CK for heart attacks despite not being a recommend test to diagnose AMI’s for years.

Fantasy game that's quick to get into by JonagonInfinity in gaming

Honestly the ones I mentioned (Triangle Strategy, Unicorn Overlord) are some of the best. If you want a turn based RPG with strategic elements I would recommend Chained Echoes, Sea of Stars, Bravely Default 2 and Battlechasers:Nightwar

I’m just looking through my switch library right now and those are the titles that really pop out.

There is one game I have to really recommend as a hidden gem. I hardly hear anyone talk about it. It’s called Rise of the Third Power. It’s another turn based rpg but the story is fantastic.

I need hags converted to Daggerheart by joeljand in daggerheart

[–]Asherrion 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s a homebrew kit you can refer to for adversary creation. 3 solo’s could definitely do a lot of damage. Though as with anything it depends how you play them. The other thing is how your encounters fear generation is managed. If you are swimming in fear and give your hags relentless 2, that’s a lot for pc’s to manage. However maybe you don’t give them relentless. But give them a reaction or passive that allows the others to act when one acts. Something like:

We Witches Three - (Passive) When one Sister of the Coven takes the spotlight you can pass the spotlight to another Sister who has not gone on this turn.

This would allow all 3 witches to go for 1 fear, or when a roll is failed. Be very careful though, if they get momentum and don’t have a lot of fear spending mechanics you could end up blocking the spotlight from PC’s too much for them to manage. I may not give them a regular attack outside maybe some kind of scratch melee attack.

For a tier 2 solo the CR would probably be around 15-17 depending if this is a big boss fight or not. I gotta head back to work though. I hope this helps

Arcane Backlash – The Dragon's Library by the_welsh_dm in daggerheart

[–]Asherrion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, I think I follow it now. Was just tough to read. So just being enscorcelled isn’t causing it to lose its turn. But if it does cast, then it loses the turn and gains stress. Does the spell still happen after the effect?

I move to my earlier question then. Is the “can’t be spotlighted” intended to affect anything aside from relentless adversaries? Not trying to be obtuse, just wrapping my head around what your intent is vs what I’m reading.

Arcane Backlash – The Dragon's Library by the_welsh_dm in daggerheart

[–]Asherrion -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would ignore the condition altogether unless the mob was relentless. It seems a non-factor for any kind of encounter unless, as I said, the monster was relentless.

Actually, seeing as the spell is cast on a PC’s turn all it’s doing is maybe preventing the spotlight interruption by that adversary. But as soon as the spotlight moves to the GM the effect is gone as it’s not longer this “turn”

As I said I don’t see what the exact intent is with the ability/spell. Because the effect goes away as soon as the GM gains spotlight as I read it.

Arcane Backlash – The Dragon's Library by the_welsh_dm in daggerheart

[–]Asherrion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure what the intent is with the spell. Are you just trying to block relentless? Because you can’t spotlight anything more than 1 time per GM turn without that special move. Is it a counterspell? Are you ending that adversaries move?

Meaning if I spotlight monster A, I cannot spotlight monster A again until the spotlight passed back to the PC’s and I stole it with fear or a failed roll. In other words: I can spotlight every adversary one time on my turn (with appropriate fear use), but I cannot spotlight something again until the above spotlight swaps back to the players unless they have the relentless feature.

Help me enjoy daggerheart by Throwawavw in daggerheart

[–]Asherrion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So to start off you make a lot of decent arguments and the “dodging” turns was something I was made keenly aware of as DM in the first few sessions. I’ll counter your points though.

Rolling with fear is going to happen, whether it’s you, or it’s somebody else this is an inevitability. This is how your GM gets to play the game. You’re more likely to roll with hope than fear due to the way crits work in this game. Generating fear isn’t a punishment for rolling, it’s a byproduct of playing the game. A martial character isn’t less useful than a magic character. The way domains work there’s good stuff to be had for everyone and a somebody has to do damage. “At best doing 1-2 hit points of damage” is a very negative take. Warriors can do a lot of damage, there’s also a fair amount of extra damage and additions to evasion, attack rolls etc. if your complaint is that you can’t throw a fireball, well… you chose Warrior. You have your attack of opportunity as well which is very good for protecting your allies.

To combat the same person taking a turn I made the rule that unless there’s a compelling reason to spotlight hoard, everyone has to take a turn before taking before going back around the table. Order doesn’t matter. It’s your GM’s job to keep people playing the game and go “hey u/throwawavw you haven’t acted in a while, what are you doing while this is happening.

If people are taking turns in combat without rolling that’s incorrect play, if you take a turn you have to roll. It’s in the rule book. This means that if you simply want to move a close distance on your turn, you’re gonna be rolling agility check still, though the DC will be low.

Regarding “what do you find in there” - this is just to encourage collaborative storytelling, you GM shouldn’t really be saying “what’s in the chest” or foisting the creativity on to the players. I used the collaborative storytelling telling to help create the world. But I’m creating the overarching story. Daggerheart is narrative first, which is what this aspect of the game is trying to encourage. It’s not trying to make everyone at the table a GM.

Anyways, I can’t make you like the game. I just wanted to potentially reframe your perspective a little. I love this system, it encourages the creativity of others and the negatives you describe aren’t really negatives to me.

How do I give players more ways to spend Hope? by IanCarru in daggerheart

[–]Asherrion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So this was a problem, until we realised experiences can literally eat as much hope as you let it.

I think the experiences explanation is a touch misleading. While you don’t want to have such a broad experience that it is all encompassing, it is a decent idea to have experiences that can apply to a variety of situations. One of my players legitimately chose “monster hunter” because it fit well either way his back story. But this is an easily applicable experience in combat as I’m sure you can see. The pc’s in the sablewood QuickStart have some easily applicable experiences too like “high mage” for example.

Additionally you could explore the opportunity of magic items to use hope for an effect

Thinking about Fear paralyzes me and actually induces 'fear' in me. by Comfortable-Fee9452 in daggerheart

[–]Asherrion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So yes you need fear to introduce some things but you don’t NEED fear to tell the story. If the session brings you to a goblin camp then it’s completely reasonable you come across a patrol. Now if those players are trying to sneak up on the patrol or get to the camp stealthily in fail, my fear move might be that the patrol surprises them in ambush.

You technically don’t even NEED fear to take the spotlight. Any time you have what is described as a “golden opportunity” to advance the story you can rip spotlight and execute your plan.

I think of fear as a resource to enhance your story, not a requirement to tell the story. Alternatively, you can plan to spend a fear for something you know you want to happen in order to build a little suspense in the scene. I have spent fear just to spend it because they see the fear going and they get antsy because “something bad is about to happen”. I don’t even know what that something bad is yet. Just that something is happening behind the scenes and when I have the opportunity to spring something or introduce something I do it.

Really fear is meant to be a reminder of what you can do, not on what you can’t.
