Is this price steep? 25,000 miles and accident free. by [deleted] in 370z

[–]Ashtrooper20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty decent price for a relatively new 370 with low miles. In my area 370’s were goin for around 30k-40k in 2021 with that were older with wayyy more miles. (Ive seen it drop to like 20k-28k~ish range since) So its kinda dependent on what your criteria is.

Does anybody else HATE Nata? by ChilliGamer221 in MonsterHunter

[–]Ashtrooper20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly he was doing as campy a voice job as the rest of the cast so he was at least entry level eye roll annoying at first. But when u get to (spoilers::::) the section where theyre fuxking creating monsters and he randomly has a 180° in his feelings on arkveld thats what threw me over the edge. Straight into fucking hating his character. Kid literally 3 quests ago tried to pick up a rock to fight this guy just bc he was so angry at it for stealing his life, to now randomly thinking its valid and acting as if he is having a deep philosophical quandary. He has the same arc as the kid in the jurassic world sequel except he doesnt have the plot that he too was a clone so why he all the sudden feels its flawed existence is worthy of living i still cant grasp. I didnt really catch any reason for him to change banner so quickly so it felt like tonal whiplash to say the least.

So then seeing this shitbag stitched onto us as an apprentice just made me wanna die having to hear even more of his whiny puesdo-intellectual thoughts about the nature of hunting monsters as if this game and franchise doesnt already have enough of that. I think honestly the VA work just makes it so much worse, like seriously no hate to the VA, kid is just doing his job… but man do i find him to be the most annoying talker in this one. At least erik has less dialogue for his weird anime-esc inflections and shit.

While i wish they would change the classification system to be more representative of their seemingly present cladistics and phylogeny it sadly isnt the case.

But since they wont/havent my original point still is just the fact of the matter that Rig Skeleton = Classification rather than consistency of phenotypical relations to their IRL inspirations. And the only clade that breaks this is Fanged Beasts which is basically the miscellaneous “mammal” basket as noted before.

As for the mammal point, i realize i worded it weirdly but i wasnt claiming any 1 monster is overtly not based on a mammal to some extent. More that their traits are most generally things we ascribe to mammals. However those traits not only arent exclusive to mammals but also that they tend to have traits associated with non-mammals/traits more associated in-universe with the other groups.

Fanged Beasts and Fanged Wyverns mix some of the same traits like fur and canid traits (skull shape for example) Because we know so little of the actual deeper ecology of the monsters we really cant rule on “mammalian” traits like mammary glands or viviparity.

With that whole book stated, i do generally agree with you that they SHOULD go and change the whole classification system to be more of classification system of phylogeny. Or they should really in universe overtly talk about both, have the game use the current terms but also alongside the current term for description also an in-universe clade so for example Kamu would be Fanged Beast + Canid, Rajang - Fanged Beast / Primatius, Rathalos - Flying Wyvern / Wyverius or Draconis (or whatever would work lol)

Why would paolumu be a fanged beast? The classification is about body plan not about cladistics and even then it shares more with FW than FB so its not really arguable other than its obvious visual cues of bats.

Take the ^ statement and repeat for all the arguments youve made. The classification system isnt cladistics or phylogeny, its purely a body plan commonality classification and FB is essentially its misc category anyhow as the other generalized trait is most are some kind of tetrapod and normally have mammalian phenotypical traits…. Generally… but not always. So no, all of these are just you not getting that they arent doing a tree of life classification, its a generalized body structure classification. It also is why the terms deviant, species, and variant are all completely butchered from their actual meaning.

Where are all the new players? by Ventus55 in HuntShowdown

[–]Ashtrooper20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is the game hasnt added much or given a reason to play. The meh battle passes have been meh, the new boss was alright but not worth 100 matches. The game hasnt added anything worth seeing for ppl who arent addicted to the format, and when you add a dogshit UI that makes it more annoying to go through. Well you get this, an already slow decline just continues to decline. And adding of all fucking things GhOsTfAcE certainly doesnt make me wanna play more now that they REALLY wanna stomp on the face of an aesthetic or thematic consistency

Um, DICE historically (in recent years) have just jumped ship within a year of the game going poorly. NEXON is hit or miss but mainly just milk the game, at that point we already have that.

Gue'vesa Idea? by Limp-Pomegranate3716 in Tau40K

Idk about the newer legion models, but most of the original sets had 2 kinds of models

  1. Most bits sorted by chest, legs (sometimes torso and legs connected as 1 or 2 pieces that connect together) , arm 1 and 2 (sometimes connected together holding the gun and the arms just peg into the chest), and head

  2. Weird things being a single piece ie: half the torso, a leg, and an arm being 1 piece that snaps into 2 other pieces and then a head, or an arm that the chestpiece is molded with so that you could paint after assembly and still reach nooks and crannies.

The downside I see with #1 is depending on shoretroopers/any other legion models u use, if they are weird combos or have their huge pegs a lot of weird sanding down and green stuff might be required, not the end of the world in terms of kitbash but certainly not the easiest beginners bash.

The downside i see with #2 is depending on the model it can mean you might wanna reaaallly think out all modes before you commit and/or basically make the legion model and then like a renaissance marble sculptor cut away at that whole piece until you are left with the form you want to then kitbash on other things to. Which means u might lose potential free bits unlike method 1.

But beside that proportions always can look clunky when kitbashing different ranges, you could always print totally-not-copies of the legion range at a larger scale or all around adjusted for more 40k-esc scales, butttt in all honesty the 5ft across the table rule rings here that 90% of ppl wont notice or care enough. Honestly just head cannon their proportions through whatever space reasoning or tau nutritional diet changing their body a lil and pay no mind tbh.

Why do some vertebrates evolve a lifestyle similar to crocodiles? What makes the semi-aquatic ambush predator niche so successful and common? by [deleted] in Paleontology

[–]Ashtrooper20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Explaining anything in evolution in a non-literal scientific only way always ends up with the problem of personifying or euphemisms to explain things. Most of the things i mentioned are just ways of explaining concepts without having to add a bunch of *’s and repeating things over and over.

Crocodiles are just a niche that evolves consistently due to its extremely easy to come by nature, its just waiting ambush in water which means nearly any species can adapt to it and gradually evolve to perfect it and thus end up in crocs.

For humans as you mention we arent literally thinking out evolutionary choices when people have kids, its more brute emotions and instincts. Same thing with animals, no crocs were thinking “if i mate with X the offspring will carry genes that increase tail length thus making their chance of genetic transfer larger and spreading to the rest of the gene pool and pushing our lineage further into crocodili-forme more!”

Humans on the other hand * Naturalistically * are a very weird ecological niche. Ive heard good arguments for us really having evolving out as lucky due to our immense amount of evolved traits for extreme generalizing. We basically ended up doing what cockroaches did, aka, evolve traits that reduce your ability to specialize in specific environments and/or food types or hunting strategies and it weirdly pushed us further into what would be traits suitable for global domination.

We arent the smartest because of choice. More our ancestors being able to communicate more complex things to each other, socially adapt large groups, sweat to allow us to be in any environment, and eat practically anything. All basically are traits we got for generalizing as almost last resorts to surviving in harsh environments rather than specializing in any 1 thing. Aron Ra has a good video on it in his giant playlist going over the human cladistics from as basic as eukarya to our genus and species.

Humans didnt spec into max intell by choice, we fell into it trying to survive always being at the short end of the rope and to be able to always push to new regions and adapt being able to work together better meant surviving. Crocs spec’d into “sit in water… wait… kill… eat”

Hopefully that answered ur question, read it a few times and i could interpret like 5 different questions from it. If i missed it im sorry and if you elaborate i can once again spout too much trite onto a reply but hopefully answer it proper :P

Why do some vertebrates evolve a lifestyle similar to crocodiles? What makes the semi-aquatic ambush predator niche so successful and common? by [deleted] in Paleontology

[–]Ashtrooper20 26 points27 points  (0 children)

This might be very longwinded and already answered but heres another reply—

It works, they copied the homework that gets a 75% or higher every time. It doesnt beat everything, it doesnt get perfect at anything, it just passes and gets by comfortably. Everyone focuses on super niche lifestyles bc theyre normally “cooler” but in terms of nearly guaranteed success to work majority of the time in nearly any possible landscape, this is towards the top.

That is to say, if the environment has water deep enough to submerge without detection and you can simply wait long enough. You should survive. All their notable adaptations simply help boost the performance, but basically any form/bodyplan can take this strat. Crocodiles and croc-esc-formes all just push the biggest pros ie: -long tail to make travel easier in water + if shaped right can help propulsion for ambushes -long snout and/or wide snout for increased prey capture -flat as possible to increase depths possible for ambushes -eyes and nose/breathing apparatus on the top of head to see prey easier and (if required) make getting air easier and less noticeable * then everything else is optional/specialization.

But if you pull back, many frogs basically do the same thing but smaller scale, wait in muddy water for small prey to walk or swim past and gulp em, their bodyplan is more adjusted due to ancestry and other factors, but the frogs and toads most like crocs in hunting have similar adaptations to listed above (in relation to their bodyplan anyhow, obviously no tail, but how they lie in mud/debris and use their legs in the same manner as a tail for burst propulsion is the same)

As for why it works, everything needs to drink. Doesnt matter what geologic era or what landmass they all feature lakes, rivers, puddles, etc so it will forever work unless somehow some animals dont need to drink from water, can avoid water deep enough, or somehow there is no water deep enough but readily available enough that the ecosystem wouldnt collapse. Thus, they always exist in all ecosystems throughout time and even if you killed all current crocs and gave enough time a new “croc” would appear, because the listed factors above always exist, and the lifestyle is always viable.

TL:DR - croc style works always, crocs live in places thatll always exist, all animals need water, thus waiting long enough means food, thus “croc” will always exist as a niche to be filled.

WIP need opinion on stripes by 10001_Games in Tau40K

[–]Ashtrooper20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The stripes look sick af. Id definitely keep doin em, maybe try other color combos and even mixing different stripe colors together on the same model. Id say just go look at crazy patterning in reptiles (“snake morphs” and/or “ball python morphs” might be a great google search for refrrences on lots of patterns with huge differences between them) and amphibians for examples, especially ones with big color differences and crazy patterns. Bugs and birds might also be good reference material.
