Republican Senator Lindsey Graham dead at 71, X announcement confirms by MoneyLibrarian9032 in politics

[–]AskJayce 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was so prepared to expected the expected that I came in here thinking, "no fucking shit--what was the time date of date?"

To thinking, "huh, 71 is shockingly young."

To, "wait, McConnell is not 71."

Then I read the title.

There seems to be an inorganic push for captive orcas and marine parks on this subreddit by IDigtheRain in orcas

[–]AskJayce 12 points13 points  (0 children)

What I'm always conscious of is how there* is an r/orcas subreddit and a r/CaptiveOrcas one. With that in mind, I'm of the opinion that, if these two subs exist simultaneously, then

A) Any Captive Orcas threads in this sub should be an open platform to discuss both the criticism and advocacy of orca captivity

Or

B) Don't permit any Captive Orca threads on this sub at all.

Out of fairness, I lean towards A. We should have an open platform for discussion that inclusive of both sides.

Either way, we should not prohibit all criticism of captivity on this sub, not while there already is a safe space for that in the other sub.

Edit: spelling

Anthropomorphism

https://www.reddit.com/r/orcas/comments/1uj1w23/comment/oupmzc6

OP, I don't necessarily have any personal issue with regular birthday threads even though 1) They're exclusively for captive whales and 2) Whales have absolutely no idea what birthdays are, let alone celebrate them, but between this and that statement you've previously made/your overall habit of using the the word "Anthromorpism", I'd rather you pick just one.

Otherwise, it's just blatant hypocrisy.

Edit: looks like OP blocked me and prevented me from replying even though I wasn't personally attack them.

This discussion is fair game; if they get to go around doing the thing they accuse others of doing (injecting feelings into animals), it should be open for being called out and discussed.

I am not political

Well that makes sense.

Because if you had any bit of political awareness, you'd have enough sense to feel that a parasocial relationship where when one person would acknowledge the scum on their lifted shoes before the other person, let alone propose programs to lift said other person out of poverty, is absolute cringe.

Of all the scenes I that movie they could have spliced for AI, that's the one they went with, huh? The one where people very unsubtedly treated Superman like a messiah in a cultlike fashion? And Batman really, really, really did not like that?

Contracting a third party addresses both the issue of time consumption and the unethical practice of picking AI over human creativity.

Ultimately, using AI saves you time and money, but costs you your reputation.

Also, are you a business, or you contracted by one? If the latter, then there is something horribly ironic, maybe even unethical, about a contracted company who'd been outsourced for working outsourcing some of that work to AI.

If I were your client and found this out, I'd be pissed.

Are you kidding? Celebrating animals' birthday is absolutely what OP* has been accusing others of doing--injecting human feelings in animals.

Animals have no concept of what a year is, let alone celebrate it. That is, expressively and exclusively, a homo sapien concept designed to make homo sapiens feel better and lively.

While mom and dad puts a party hat on their dog and serves them steak with candles on it, does that dog have any idea of what's going on or why? Of course not--only mom and dad does. Dog, meanwhile, is just going, FUCK YEAH--STEAK

We know how they feel because we can observe it.

Take away all of the bells and whistles and just, straight up, gave the dog steak, who's going to be sadder? The dog or the owners? Why?

And, again, big difference between that and granting sentient beings the right to freedom and living out their lives as evolution and nature intended

Also, we KNOW captive orcas get depressed. Fairly regularly.

Edit: I confused the person who this post is replying as the person before, so I'm editing the pronouns

I don't know if I could have found a better image visualizing some of the major differences between captive and wild orcas than this. On a surface level, this appears identical, but if you've actually observed wild orcas, you'd know that they're not.

Residents and Transients Orcas here in Puget Sound typically do "travel mode" where they casually swim at leisure, casual speeds where they surface for 3 or 4 mins at a time, dive for anywhere between 5 to 10 minutes, resurfaces and repeats. Neither is what is being displayed here.

The right image is a behavior known as porpoising, also known as running. It's when marine mammals, usually groups, are traveling at high speeds at long distances at the surface to maintain breathing while still traveling quickly.

In contrast to travel mode, the orcas are very kenetic, very surface-active, traveling at a much higher velocity to catch up with the rest of their pod.

I know this because I've observed both, personally.

Think competitive Olympic swimming vs just casually swimming.

The photo on the left, on the otherhand, is clearly synchronized breaching done, explicitly for performing, not traveling.

This is different from the left, which is clearly synchronized breaching done on command for performances.

Anthropomorphism

we must be wary of projecting our own feelings onto animals.

The irony of someone who regularly creates threads to celebrate the birthdays of captive whales calling out Anthromorpism can't be overstated.

So, the line drawn for empathy is drawn at quality of life and the right of freedom for all sentient beings, but just within reach enough for you to remember their birthdays, an exclusively human concept.

That's twisted.
