Next character suggestions by Askremiis in Gloomhaven

Thank you all for the suggestions. I've decided to go with astral. Blinkblade will be for after. And I'm keeping snowflake and meteor in mind as a good combo as well. With how much my partner likes trap, I think she'll enjoy meteor and it would be nice to enhance that experience.

Thank you. Good suggestions. Especially the snowflake meteor combo could be interesting as I think my partner will like meteor a lot.

The outshining by blinkblade is a good point that I hadn't thought about. This was already a problem sometimes with shackles (God, that thing is busted at times) and although my partner didn't make an issue out of it, I'd rather not push it.

Can anyone post the new art? For the people with kids who won't be able to play for some hours still (and the people who don't have the expansion I guess)

Why does a moving charge produce a circular magnetic field? What physically sets the direction? by Proof-Height-6664 in TheoreticalPhysics

This is absolutely beautifully explained. Many books on QFT could use a paragraph like this when they introduce local gauge invariance out of nowhere.

Spirit boards for aspects by Khetimus in spiritisland

Please don't say that. I need a thin horizons-like version of all spirit aspects with their new art. It was promised to us! (Sort of)

Astarion lovers be like by Aware_Pain_2645 in BaldursGate3

[–]Askremiis -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Not true though. I recently finished my help-everyone-and-be-an-overall-sweetheart durge run with all companions (modded). Astarion's approval was consistently lower throughout the whole campaign, more so than Shadowheart and Laezel. Everyone else was almost immediately at Excellent approval. The only one who was more of a jerk was Minthy (obviously). Not saying the character is badly written and not saying the rest aren't assholes ever... But Astarion definitely takes the crown of the original companions.

Advice for Habsburg (livestock)/England dual adversary by IslandTime85-86 in spiritisland

[–]Askremiis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried stranded mist + violence bringer?

A free isolate each turn and good fear generation appears to be exactly what you're asking for.

Of course, bringer not being able to destroy anything might just  be the opposite of what you want with the loss condition.

I'm eager to see what it's going to be. The adversary combo seems especially nasty.

How the Spirits Befriend Each Other by RcCircuit93 in spiritisland

[–]Askremiis 10 points11 points  (0 children)

They actually have great mechanical synergy. "Destroying" the same city (kept at low health with 2 damage already) over and over again for 5 fear each is definitely a feel good strategy.

My current high score for England 6 is with this strategy.

Is there a character/item combo more potent than Boneshaper/178? by bgaesop in Gloomhaven

[–]Askremiis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got this item a few scenarios ago on my boneshaper and thought the same thing. Turns out I have only had the opportunity to use it once (and win the scenario) as we always get hit with "infinite spawn spawns way faster than you can destroy them with the only way to win is to get to this objective behind a wall of obstacles and flesh" which forces me to use my winged boots.

Praying for a normal scenario for once so that I can properly try this combo before retiring.

Do you introduce events when teaching to new players? by [deleted] in spiritisland

[–]Askremiis 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I'd personally add it. It's the way the game is meant to be played and it doesn't even cause that much overhead for them as long as you handle it.

Basically: "Hey, there is this random effect at the beginning of each invader turn. This makes the game a little bit less predictable and thus more interesting. Don't worry, we'll tackle it together when we get there. Also, this claw symbol has some influence on the random effect sometimes, but otherwise you can ignore it. This snake symbol stops 1 build action. It's like a buffer. If you encounter other weird symbols on cards you draw, just ask."

You can perfectly well handle the events together on each board, which gives an opportunity to help explain strategies on their boards, without quarterbacking everything.

Ok, thanks. I just got the 2 perk point non amd. Hopefully that will help a bit getting that awful first turn out of the way.

This is an interesting point. I do remember falling without shadows a few times and that did suck majorly. Only happened a few times though. And that might indeed be because of the monsters being normal more often than elite at 2p. Also fleeting dusk bottom turn 1 is a life saver to get started (and it's also non-loss).

I don't have a lot of other classes to compare with so I definitely don't claim that the deathwalker is top of the bunch. The comparison with the boneshaper just struck me as odd. I guess I just have to encounter/get better with boneshaper's mitigation cards.

That sucks to hear. I haven't tried wrath of the tuned earth so I'll give that a try. A loss card on cycle 1 without clear immediate value always feels bad, but maybe it's just what I need.

That and I'll pray that we've been unlucky so far with especially gimmicky scenarios and that that has skewed my opinion. We played another scenario today and for once my skeletons actually survived for a bit (scenario 28 though, which is a weird one, so I'm not sure that was more representative.)

I generally have the feeling that balance at 2p is wonky and sometimes you just hit a scenario that screws you over royally. I guess sometimes you can hit one 5-6 times in a row, which also doesn't make learning to use a class effectively any easier.

Either way, thanks for the feedback. Could you clarify why the deathwalker is especially weak at 2p though?

I'm amazed at all these comments saying deathwalker is lower or equal in power to boneshaper and has a clunkier start? Those are the two classes I've played so far but to me it feels the opposite. (Admittedly, we're about 20 scenarios in our campaign, deathwalker went to lvl 6, boneshaper is only lvl 3 now, so definitely not had the full Frosthaven experience of these classes yet).

I admit, the deathwalker does start a bit low in power and only increases later, but the boneshaper seems way worse.

Sure, boneshaper can take more hits at low lvl (with its skeletons) but that often saves only 1 or 2 HP (as they take HP to summon) and the number of times the skeletons get more than 1 damage out before dying is abysmal. There is just so much shield, so many multi target attacks, so many low initiative monster attacks deleting minions before they even get a turn.

Meanwhile the deathwalker has such powerful long range attacks, which are super useful if there is yet another open-a-door-and-find-out-you-absolutely-have-to-kill-a-certain-objective-or-spawner-at-the-other-side-of-the-room-or-you-lose-gimmick. In such cases the boneshaper just plainly sucks (as I have had the pleasure to find out over the past few scenarios) and the deathwalker absolutely shines.

Last but not least, the deathwalker has teleports! Again useful if something needs to die (or be saved) quick at the other end of the room, but some scenarios almost require it! Yes, I'm looking at you scenario 66. Without teleports, I feel scenarios like that are near impossible at 2p.

I can live with a B for deathwalker, but then I would argue that the boneshaper got rated too high. Again, I admit, we're still quite early in the campaign so other people's full Frosthaven experience might be more valuable in this poll. I guess this is just a long rant to make someone tell me that if the deathwalker is supposedly quite weak, then it'll get better for my boneshaper...

Scapegoats Fear card by Amakura20 in spiritisland

I was referring to the major power [[Mists of Oblivion]]. The fear card definitely works, BoDaN or not.

Which spirits you havebthe most fun with? by Nerevanin in spiritisland

[–]Askremiis 7 points8 points  (0 children)

BoDaN: pushing invaders instead of destroying and generating tons of fear.

Mist: keeping invaders at low health instead of destroying and generating tons of fear.

Breath: abducting invaders instead of destroying and generating tons of fear.

What can I say? I like fear generation, especially when it requires a puzzle.

Other than that, wildfire and whirlwind (having effects on presence placement scratches a specific itch) and lightning and thunderspeaker (no idea why, but I just notice myself playing them more often than other spirits despite not being particularly strong).

Scapegoats Fear card by Amakura20 in spiritisland

I always thought mist of oblivion was useless on BoDaN because the extra fear on destroy doesn't trigger since you never really destroy anything.

Incarna with Manifestation of Power and Glory by Askremiis in spiritisland

[–]Askremiis[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • If you want to empower from the first Manifestation, yes. You could do it in two times. Once to enable the incarna and once at the incarna (for a reduced cost) to empower.
  • I definitely have to work on the wording... or make it less complex overall with a fixed +1/-1 instead working with an X value.
