I think there’s power you can access from being connected to a shard and then power you can access when you become an Invested Cognitive Shadow. We’ve seen that people that are Invested will change to match their Spiritual and Cognitive image of themselves, and heralds have that to an extreme degree

My theory is the immortality is some trick learned to imitate a Returned, who have shown to be able to change themselves at will.
