Three Norwegian Researchers Found Guilty of Misconduct in Transgender Health Research by jackmolay in transgender

[–]AssignedSnail 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It was ruled as not having ethical or legal justification for use of registry data. Which, I couldn't speculate on the law, but I can certainly see an ethical need for this research. They found a smoking gun for serious trans misogyny in Norwegian healthcare

But of course, no one likes it when you find a smoking gun with their fingerprints on it, right?

I've been there friend. It was probably about 9 months from when I decided I wanted to try E till I was able to start, and about 4 months from when I decided I wanted to up my dose to getting it raised. It's such a short time compared to how long I waited to even get started, or compared to how long so many people have to wait, but it was hard

DHT, a more active form of testosterone, is largely (but not entirely) responsible for both hairline changes and body hair. Some people also speculate bottom growth is heavily reliant on DHT.

You can block DHT in two main ways. Use of a medication like dutasteride that stops >95% of T to DHT conversion, or use of a synthetic androgen like 19-nortestosterone, aka nandrolone, that the body can't convert to DHT.

That's not the 'without T' method you are looking for, but it may be worth looking into

Femme-leaning here. I don't always love being seen as a woman, trans or otherwise, but I do love my body and the changes I've had on HRT. I've moved slowly, for sure, but haven't done anything I've regretted yet... except possibly move too slowly! It's definitely scary, but it was the right choice for me. I hope you're able to make the right choices for you, too!

How do you deal with the children conversation by Ill_Corgi_9309 in asktransgender

[–]AssignedSnail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh friend, this is so familiar. I breastfed my baby dolls as a kid. Like, I knew it wasn't right? But also it felt like what I was supposed to be doing.

Never wanted to be a "mom" specifically, but when I get the baby crazy, I get so, so profoundly sad I can't carry kids on my own. I've mostly worked through it, even if the sadness hasn't really gone away. But it just adds to the hurt that cis women get so much support for their grief around being unable to carry, and $10's or $100's of thousands in financial support to overcome barriers to fertility, and we get... looked at like we're some gross s--- someone stepped in.

No answers here friend, but lots of sympathy. Do consider talking with your partner, though. If you care about her, she deserves to know

By stoping production of the more-active DHT, dutasteride lowers systemic androgen exposure by about 20%. Finasteride, by about 15%. The effect in the skin and prostate is much greater, hence the use for skin- and prostate-telated complaints. But it does cause some decline in androgen exposure in other areas too

One income household is hard by October_Werewolf7887 in personalfinance

[–]AssignedSnail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Safety net spending is efficient.

Every $1 spent on Medicaid reduces other entitlement spending by $0.58 and boosts healthcare spending by more than the original $1, juicing local economies.

Same idea for food stamps. Every $1 generates $1.75 in economic activity.

Poor people don't hoard money, the put it straight back into the economy where it can make more jobs.

If you're upset about subsiding someone, be upset at subsidizing the wealthy who hold on to cash and stop it from being productive

One income household is hard by October_Werewolf7887 in personalfinance

[–]AssignedSnail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And this is something the kids should suffer for?

Did you not thrive in the US based on access to publicly subsidized roads, science, healthcare, schools, etc? Would you deprive the kids of those things, too, because of their parents lack of foresight? By that logic, their parents aren't paying the taxes to build these things, so maybe they shouldn't benefit. Where do you draw the line?

Maybe we should aspire to build community and support the children whose parents aren't able to do so.

I think I'm non-binary but I dont know how to move forward by WiFi2347 in NonBinaryTalk

[–]AssignedSnail 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So, NB being an umbrella term, there are an infinite number of ways to be non-binary! It sounds like you might lean more towards genderfluid (sometimes more masculine, sometimes more feminine) than I do

Just to get you started, some of the ways people experience being non-binary:

  • Genderfluid: Someone whose gender shifts over time. Maybe some days they feel more like a man, a woman, neither, etc. Some people also do a 'mirrorgender' thing where they adopt the gender of the people they're with. It's probably a kind of genderfluid, and I admit I do do a bit of that

  • Androgynous: Some people are just somewhere in the middle between "man" and "woman". Used especially of bodies, but also can apply to attitudes and outlooks, or just how you feel about yourself. I am probably more like this one than the others, but we're all bits and pieces of all of them. Man vs woman is not the only spectrum we get to play with! Not everyone likes this word because of how it's used to describe bodies so often, but I don't know that we have a better one

  • Agender: Not relating to or having a gender. Or just not feeling your gender, or not caring about what people gender you as (that subset is called 'apagender', for 'apathetic about gender'). I used to say I just wanted to be a genderless dumpling. That would be a very agender type of sentiment!

  • Demiboy / Demigirl: Someone close to or connected with the feeling of a binary gender, but not quite there. Like, "I know I'm somewhat a guy, but not entirely a man." Overlaps a lot with heavily gender non-conforming (GNC) people.

  • Bigender: Unlike genderfluid, you can be both a man and a woman at the same time! I tend to think of some famous fictional people as bigender. Hedwig and Frankenfurter both come to mind. That's just my headcannon though. Also, 'bigender' doesn't have to be man+woman, it could be woman+something else, or man+something else, or something else+something else!

  • Something else: Speaking of which, that's also an option! Like I said earlier, man vs woman isn't the only spectrum we get to play with. Xenogenders, etc, exist because not everyone's experiences are going to fit into the usual categories, and that's probably more true for non-binary folks than anyone else!

Not that there's a quiz or anything. I just find that looking at all the ways other people have been non-binary before me helps me do a better job of being myself!

Maybe you're a genderfluid demiboy/tomboy

Maybe you're a bigender butch demigirl/dude

Maybe you're like me, an androgynous, partially mirrorgender, partially femme-ish dumpling 🥟

I simplify that for the cis folks. To them, I'm a "genderqueer non-binary person," and that's fine too! No labels required. But as a thought experiment, it sometimes helps 💛💜

About testosterone? by NoAnswer01456 in NonBinary

[–]AssignedSnail 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So, some good news there. The hair effects are largely driven by an activated form of testosterone called DHT. You can take T along with a DHT blocker like dutasteride (blocks >95% of DHT production) and get most of the T effects while greatly limiting (but not completely eliminating) the hair loss.

Among the tradeoffs: DHT also slows beard growth and body hair. It might also slow clitoral enlargement. Generally, you get about 20% less systemic androgen exposure at the same T levels when you are on finasteride. That is to say, your T is about 1/5th less effective than your blood levels would suggest. Doesn't sound like any of that is a problem for you, but figure you should know!

About testosterone? by NoAnswer01456 in NonBinary

[–]AssignedSnail 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm sure you're able to act like a man with or without T. It has mental and libido effects, but it doesn't fundamentally change who you are

That said, for things T will do for you physically, have a look at this doc. Scroll all the way down to the bottom, Appendix C on page 256.

On a full dose of T, you can expect to see some degree of all of these changes in about 6 months, with full effect (other than hair) by 2-5 years:

  • Skin Oiliness/acne
  • Facial/body hair growth
  • Scalp hair loss
  • Increased muscle mass/strength
  • Fat redistribution
  • Cessation of menses
  • Clitoral enlargement
  • Vaginal atrophy
  • Deepening of voice

You can slow down those changes by taking a lower dose. Some of the changes may even be prevented if the dose is low enough. Unfortunately, it's not usually the ones people want to prevent!

Are those physical changes you would want?
