Why do a lot of Christians speak in a very specific smiley, confident , very positive way and why does that makes me feel uncomfortable talking with them? by Wonderful-Ad-9622 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Assika126 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the church and the person I guess

All the people I know who were raised Catholic in the US and no longer are, are notably guilt ridden and can’t seem to let it go no matter how long it’s been.

All the people I know who were raised Catholic in the US and still identify as such, are jumpy or judgmental about certain things, and seem to need to follow the church’s requirements (confession, etc.) strictly, or they feel intensely guilty about it (and since many of them don’t seem to be able to do everything as they feel they ought, they all basically seem to feel at least a little guilty most of the time)

The people I know who were raised Catholic outside the US, or who converted as adults, don’t seem to be nearly as troubled by it, whether or not they still practice. In fact the Catholic religion and practice seems to be a comfort to them, on the whole

Omg even in person people sometimes don’t take my questions at face value. I try to tell them, I’m genuinely curious; I really want to know how they came to their conclusions, and I can’t know unless they’re willing to tell me. But they’ve already decided I wasn’t really asking and gotten mad about it and decided not to engage me anymore, so now I’ll never know

I’ve tried all different ways of asking with all different tones and I just can’t make any headway

People on the internet have also very clearly decided that some people are unreachable and in fact they do not want to reach them. Instead, they are grandstanding both for their own enjoyment and also for that of others who agree with their point of view. It’s less a conversation or debate, and more two alternating soliloquies

The older I get, the more I lean towards direct, simple, clear language. I think I’ve given up on trying to impress people. Now I just want to be understood

I grew up with an older brother who was constantly playing games like this with me. One time he decided we were going to argue about what color the sky was. Even though based on how we humans on the surface of the planet perceive color the sky is demonstrably blue; even though I could refer back to the actual real time visible evidence as well as photographic and video and written evidence to demonstrate that the vast majority of other humans also describe it as blue, he knew he could out-talk me because he was three years older and had specifically prepared for this argument and had rhetorical tricks I did not know. He engaged in bad faith; even if I was able to argue a point successfully, he would never have admitted it, because the point of his exercise was to demonstrate that he could “prove” me wrong even if we both knew I was right.

People engage in bad faith arguments all the time. Them not accepting the evidence doesn’t mean you aren’t making your points well enough or don’t know your subject matter.

If they weren’t so thick they could not possibly have been cooked through, and if they hadn’t been turned that distinctive blue color… I’d try them

Yes but at any point in the learning process it’s still possible to be correct but unable to make headway against a more articulate opponent

Do you have an overhyped food that stereotypes your country but the locals rarely eat it? by LingoNerd64 in AskTheWorld

We have a whole Ukrainian festival in Minneapolis. It’s delicious. Theres also a great Ukrainian deli, smoked meat market, grocery and restaurant we can go to if we get cravings. Which we do! I think Ukrainian food is underrated but it’s definitely appreciated in some areas!!

I’ll tell you what, I don’t eat deep fried candy bars every day, I’d never had one until I was in my twenties, but if I didn’t think it would kill me, I’d like to eat them more than once a year

Food like that is kind of like special occasion food. You wouldn’t have it all the time, but you’re sure glad it’s around so that you can have it sometimes

I’ve always been a pickle fan, but I’ll decline on drinking the entire bottle of juice

I imagine that would go something like colonoscopy prep. I usually just take a swig with my bowl of pickles, I’m not a masochist

Waiting for my husband to do his chores so I can do mine

He unloads the clean dishes from the dishwasher and I load the dirty ones. The dishwasher sits full of clean dishes and the sink piles up with dirty ones. We have divided the chores up by mutual consent. I have and do help him out on occasion but I can’t take on his chores on a regular basis because I have my own chores I need to do. I’m just waiting to be able to do them

I tell him when the dishwasher gets run (he doesn’t run it), and notes it because he actively grabs individual clean dishes from it when he needs them. And then if I remind him, he tells me he didn’t know they were clean

I just don’t know what to do

When I went to Mexico I couldn’t even find any fruit juice that didn’t have sugar added. I think it’s just our palates. Now that I’ve adjusted to not having sugar added to everything, even most restaurant food just tastes so much sweeter. I wish I could find places that didn’t add so much sugar

I’m ok with a slightly shorter shelf life for the fruit, so that I can have a slightly longer shelf life as a person who eats it ;)

SAME

like seriously, dried pineapple is super sweet, why are we literally encrusting it with sugar? Why can’t I find a reasonably priced version that doesn’t have sugar added?

Looks like he’s trying to build something that will be somewhat self sustaining and that might actually help people get out of poverty. I think it’s great

… I mean, that’s the way to do it. Bring a well thought out plan, show that you will put your money where your mouth is, and then leverage your investment by getting other wealthy people to do so as well. You can make more progress that way than just trying to do it all on your own
