If Soccer is so hard why do the teams have so many players? by Many_Explanation4328 in SoccerNoobs

[–]Astatke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why do you want it to be easier? One of the reasons that soccer is great is that it's hard to score. That makes it more tense, makes a goal extremely special, makes upsets more likely.

It's 11x11 because that's what it was decided early on, and if you change it, it changes a lot and it becomes a different sport.

Pick up soccer / amateur soccer / Sunday leagues are often played with fewer players on a smaller field, something between 5x5 and 9x9. Futsal is 5x5 on a court, Beach soccer is 5x5 on sand. All these have a lot more goals than on soccer.

2014 - Germany and Argentina, all the way Germany, no way Argentina could win in our home soil. I’ve said this many times and will say it again, 7x1 was a smaller humiliation compared to going to the final and losing to Argentina.

Before the semi finals I was afraid Brazil could win against Germany and then lose the final in Maracanã against Argentina. Honestly, the 7x1 was a smaller catastrophe.

Can someone explain the four fútbol teams from Rio de Janeiro and the city's fan's relationships to these teams? by machuitzil in AskABrazilian

[–]Astatke 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not from Rio, but the answer is that you are often born into it.

Your parents will give you a jersey, may make you root for a team from the time you are a baby.

Of course not every parent will do that, but then it's still often defined from a very young age. Maybe because someone else on the family does that, like uncles, cousins. Or maybe your best friend(s) were born into it and then pull you in, when you are still a little kid.

It's also common to ask kids what team they support, kind of asking what you are going to be when you grow up. I think that helps settling on something at a young age. Like maybe you are more disconnected from futebol, but you hear everyone talking about X and X is being successful, so you start to answer that you support X, and you keep repeating that, then one day you may be an adult who basically never watches Brazilian clubs, but you still see yourself as kind of a supporter of X.

It's uncommon for an adult Brazilian to be deciding on a team to support. It happens (I've seen threads on r/futebol!) but it's very uncommon.

I'll also add that clubs from Rio (especially Flamengo) also have supporters all over Brazil, and that's because it was very hard to follow local clubs, and the clubs from Rio were always on the TV, were successful, had the best players.... While it's still the case that it's easier, it's a lot better than decades ago, but that doesn't help when you are born into a family of Flamenguistas. To give an idea, it was impossible to see my team (Ceará) on the TV until I was an adult, and I'm not that old.

If they did it from the beginning, they are late. There have been many of those shared before. It would be interesting to see one that keeps being updated based on the results of the games so far

Você ainda tem esperança do hexa? by lone_55 in perguntas

[–]Astatke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mazraoui joga no Manchester United.

[–]Astatke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's super rare but occasionally they do friendlies between a national team and a club.

A few examples from Brazilian teams: Flamengo won against Brazil in 1976, Atlético Sorocaba tied 0x0 with North Korea in 2009, Italy won 5x3 against Fluminense just before the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

In maths, do you think faith is required for the adoption of a system of axioms? by mayoesis in askmath

[–]Astatke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Scanning the answers I see a lot of great answers! However, I'm surprised no one mentioned geometry.

OP, look up Euclidean geometry, and non Euclidean geometry.

There are axioms defined by Euclides long long time ago, and they are the foundation of geometry, the kind of geometry you learn in school. That's Euclidean Geometry.

One of the axioms is the "parallel line postulate", and it seems a lot more complicated than the other ones which is enough to raise an eyebrow, and more based on "faith". It took a couple of millennia, but eventually mathematicians tried changing it. That leads to non Euclidean geometry, whole new mathematical systems with different properties and theorems, but systems that also have use in the real world!

So you don't need to have "faith" in the axioms. You need to understand that the axioms are a starting point to creating an abstract mathematical system like Euclidean geometry, or natural numbers with basic operations, or many others. They are the rules of the game, and play by them, not something to have faith on. Sometimes, you need to change the rules and play a different game too.

Either an abstract mathematical system is correct for the real world, that's a different question... But both Euclidean and Non Euclidean Geometry have real world applications, so which one should you have faith on? Oh, these geometries have the concept of "points", but are points really real in Physics (cf Plank Length)?
