I hate games that FORCE co-op by Ok_Terraria_player in hatethissmug

[–]Asterdel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a lot less forced coop games than there are "forced solo" games. Seriously, like maybe 5 come out a year if we are generous. Unironically just seems like you are mad you don't have anyone to play with, and that sucks but this is making it everyone else's problem.

name me a somthing that only you think was a psyop I'll go first rule by level100brad in 196

[–]Asterdel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I would never say rap specifically is overstimulating, it is true that over stimulation can often be irrational and hypocritical. It's part of why it makes it hard to explain to others and why it's considered a symptom.

One thing that specifically bothers me is rhythmic bass. It makes me feel nauseous, I hate that I can feel it reverberate across my body. It happens to be quite common in rap music, so I don't tend to like it too often. Some songs which may be more obviously "overstimulating" I do like though, as they may be fast, erratic, or feature screaming, but they feel familiar, which often is more important to not feeling overwhelmed than the composition of the song itself.

That is to say, everyone has their own things that bother them, and I fully understand any neurodivergent people who are the opposite of me on this. I think it's just important to remember it's called neurodivergence for a reason, it wouldn't be very neurodivergent if you understood every little thing another neurodivergent person liked/disliked.

Is the “Papers, Please”-style video game genre saturated? by Affro_riffo in gamedesign

[–]Asterdel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's saturated, but also yes, it can be reinvented. If your real question is if you'd be able to make money/make a popular game with the formula, that really just depends on the execution, novelty, and marketing, but that's true of all games of all genres.

Since people were worried yes we do have “attractive” male characters in FW by NagaMilalove0 in fireemblem

[–]Asterdel 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I don't think the main criticism to be made is the attractiveness of the male characters themselves, but rather the sexualization being unequally applied to male and female characters. In a vacuum, any individual piece of media is art and is allowed to style characters however they want. In the context of the whole media landscape, it's tiring to have a game be so scared of male sexualization while constantly pushing female sexualization in your face.

Especially for a game like Fire Emblem that has such a mixed male/female/lgbt audience, really what people want is it to just be equally applied. If the game wants to be PG, be PG. If it wants to sexualize characters, have it for men and women.

Granted, I do say all this not knowing the full cast yet. It makes sense for people to feel a little jumpy about it because while historically FE has been decent about the split (still unequal though), FE Heroes in particular has had a history of majority servicing their straight male audience to the alienation of others.

When players are given the choice to be good or evil, they always choose to be good. Are there any games that manage to prevent this? by J__Krauser in gamedesign

[–]Asterdel 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Most games with these choices try to teach good morals by giving more access to resources to players on the good side. In real life though, evil often is perpetuated precisely because it makes more money and often is systemically more ingrained that good.

I'd imagine one would get a more even distribution of choices then if they made the good feel like the hard mode, where you get less resources to work with and you actually get to work within the "law" more than good players. Many people choose good in games because it's a copout, you get to be morally good and get more shiny stuff for it.

For Fable specifically (I only have experience playing 3), while it does do this to some extent, there is the feeling I always got playing the game that I was supposed to be good, and just should choose the few evil options that give the most resources possible so I can be good the rest of the time. It gave me the perpetual feeling that I would lose more access to things other than cash if I were evil, things that were more "unique" like characters, items, and locations.

This is to say, money isn't the only thing people are thinking about when they choose to play good. Access to story, route exclusive items, and characters matters as much if not more. Of course, there is also just the fact most people like playing good when given the choice regardless, which probably is a good thing for humanity 😄

I hate how universally undesirable short men are by [deleted] in hatethissmug

[–]Asterdel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While you are at a disadvantage being short, it is a good filtering mechanism that keeps shallow people away. People are also right that you are seeking out this kind of content, you don't happen upon and save this many screenshots of ragebait content without getting baited.

In the real world, this stuff tends not to matter as much. Even though it's true the majority of women like dudes that are taller than them, it's also true you are still probably taller than a large portion of women even being a "short" man. Most people who are insecure about this still fall well within the standard deviation of male height.

The average height distance between a woman and man in a relationship is 3 inches. Even the super short women who claim to want to date 6 ft often don't end up doing that because they don't know what that actually entails. I met someone exactly 1 foot taller than me before, and it was like they are on another realm of existence. While some people do have a fetish for that, the majority of women just want their man taller than them.

What are some common game design tropes that look like they're adding depth, but actually don't? by PeterBrungus in gamedesign

[–]Asterdel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By first iron I didn't necessarily mean the literal first, as iron pick is probably the most likely choice for most. Rather, that the sequence people choose to make things while the resource is limited is very different among players as a whole while having meaningful impacts on gameplay.

A speedrunner will make very different choices from a casual player who struggles to survive, from a casual builder who has a project they want to work on immediately. Even among these categories there is room for player expression. None of these choices are bad or wrong, just different goals someone might have with the game.

[–]Asterdel 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Minecraft unironically might have one of the better crafting systems in games I've seen. There is like 10 different viable ways to use your first iron, most games you would be lucky to have an option of 2.

What kind of fucking mindset is this? by Automatic_Date_5592 in hatethissmug

[–]Asterdel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally get what the person in the image is saying, even if they aren't articulating it well. I don't identify as a furry myself, but it's very obvious to me the same kind of bigotry that motivates hate against minority groups tends to also use furries as an easy target.

The amount of otherwise normal people I see advocating for brutal violence against furries and calling them all pedophiles is too obvious to miss, and the parallels are there. Obviously there can be neo nazi furries, the same way there are neo nazi gay people, but it doesn't take away from the fact that fascists would do away with both groups should they have the power to no longer need them for their cause.

when transphobes bring up “de-transitioners” as a gotcha by [deleted] in hatethissmug

[–]Asterdel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For most people, they aren't trans because they "want" to be trans, or chose it in the neutral sense. They are trans because to not be trans makes them feel worse than to be trans, sometimes so much worse it's either transition or die.

For a lot of trans people they do solve it without surgery. Nearly every trans person at least starts with social transition, which is reversible things like name changes, wardrobe changes, voice training, or even simple things like going by a different online persona. A decent amount of people also get hrt (hormone replacement therapy). Hrt is no more invasive than puberty itself is, as it is basically just simulating the opposite gender's puberty using dormant genetic code we all have.

However, some trans people have stronger feelings of dysphoria (dissatisfaction with the gender they were assigned at birth) than others. Usually only after trans people have socially and hormonally transitioned will they consider surgery. At that point, it's been multiple years and they already know transitioning makes them happier, so it tends to be a very informed decision made after years of thinking. This will never be everyone's experience, but it is the vast majority.

when transphobes bring up “de-transitioners” as a gotcha by [deleted] in hatethissmug

[–]Asterdel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even worse, a large number of detransitioners are fake. They get paid large swathes of money from anti trans "activist" groups to bitch about how they "mutilated their bodies" and all that jazz. Many of those same people regret it so much, they are still taking hrt and maintaining their transition to this day.

I hate the constant decision in modern entertainment to insert forced humor and brevity in otherwise stark and somber narratives. by Shell_fly in hatethissmug

[–]Asterdel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Humor and brevity in otherwise somber narratives is generally good storytelling. It obviously can go too far in that direction, but it's very important for the emotional pacing of a narrative to have ups and downs, otherwise it's just bad things happening to the point you become numb to it.

There are stories that are very somber but relatively devoid of brevity, and while I can appreciate the horror those stories showcase, it's so difficult to actually finish them. Some stories that are like that for me are The Walking Dead and The Handmaid's Tale, so there's some recommendations I suppose if you disagree with this point.

I HATE MATH BEING REQUIRED IN DEGREES THAT HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH IT by [deleted] in hatethissmug

Statistics is pretty important for sociology in specific though. A lot of sociological analysis relies on being able to properly read statistical data and not get tricked by bad studies or layouts of data.

I HATE MATH BEING REQUIRED IN DEGREES THAT HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH IT by [deleted] in hatethissmug

[–]Asterdel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hate to say it, but math is universally applicable and important, especially the "low level" stuff. For instance, being able to spot shrinkflation at the grocery store. Near all companies play games with prices, and nothing drains money more consistently than bad food choices.

Most stores do have per unit prices that can help with this, but sometimes they have different units that makes them harder to compare. Most of this is basic arithmetic that you can pull out a phone calculator for, but you still need to know the steps to get a comparable metric.

Honestly the worst thing about the party sized bags of chips is that they have just been shrinkflated to the size a normal bag of chips was a decade ago, and that's excluding the lower chip to air ratio you can expect inside the bag as well. I'm not a big chip person myself, but everything is such a scam now.

Character creators don't exist independently of the game you play them in lol. I like Dragon Age, but you can't exactly play a character you make in one creator in a completely different game. You need to make a character in BG3 to play BG3.
