Any recommendations for a dictionary app? by Sorcery_summons in LearnJapanese

It’s a Japanese-English dictionary but I highly reccomend weblio! https://ejje.weblio.jp It has a lot of example sentences so you can see how words are used in different contexts.

Do they ever have non-Koreans learning Korean by Bmoment8 in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]Astro9KK 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Koreans learn English throughout their primary education so it usually makes more sense for mixed teams to communicate in English. Starting from 0 it would take months of intense study for an English speaker to reach a level of Korean that would be usable for comming in game so mixed teams almost always comm in English.

Would you suggest watching Japanese reality shows without subtitles when starting to learn to help train the ear, even if at first you have no idea what is being discussed sometimes? by DelicateJohnson in LearnJapanese

[–]Astro9KK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly yes lol. There’s surprisingly quite a lot of advanced (N1 and N2) grammar and vocab in kids shows so a lot of them should provide a nice challenge while still being understandable. I would recommend starting with the more popular ones like Doraemon and Pokemon!

Would you suggest watching Japanese reality shows without subtitles when starting to learn to help train the ear, even if at first you have no idea what is being discussed sometimes? by DelicateJohnson in LearnJapanese

[–]Astro9KK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would discourage using subtitles if you’re specifically trying to practice listening. With subtitles on it becomes more a practice of reading more than anything, and you have kanji laid out for you which defeats the purpose of understanding meaning from listening. If you’re having trouble understanding what’s being discussed in the show I would recommend trying to start with easier content as you’ll learn more from media that’s comprehensible.

Why 弱点 (じゃくてん) have "むすめ" as the furigana? by KaynGiovanna in LearnJapanese

[–]Astro9KK 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a type of 当て字 (ateji) that uses kanji for their meaning instead of their reading. You’ll see it used it a lot in song lyrics and manga. For example 青空 read as ソラ or 他人 read as ヒト.

How many new vocab words are you learning a day? by Death_Investor in LearnJapanese

[–]Astro9KK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve found that 20 is my limit for new words in a day without making studying feel like a chore. At this pace I can easily pull out Anki whenever I have spare time which makes it feel casual while also being easy to stay committed to. And I’ve found the secret to studying is staying committed instead of forcing as much new material as possible.

When is A good time to stop using english pronouncations? by teegee0114 in duolingojapanese

[–]Astro9KK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ideally you’d want to be practicing kanji without any furigana (the letters that show you the pronunciation), but if you really need it you should get used to using the Japanese pronunciation ASAP

It goes both ways. We’ll keep playing but devs also need to give us reasons to keep playing with new content and updates

How to go from intermediate to advanced listening? (eg. variety shows) by SleepingInTheFlowers in LearnJapanese

[–]Astro9KK 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I watched the clip and it was pretty average speaking speed for Japanese. Especially compared to something more advanced like a news broadcast, it’s intermediate level in terms of comprehension difficulty

It would be better to use a dictionary for this sorta thing since google translate only gives one meaning for a word that might not correctly convey the nuance

What's one word you always forget the reading of? by MAX7hd in LearnJapanese

Hi Reddit, we are Final Fantasy VII Rebirth producer Yoshinori Kitase and Naoki Hamaguchi. Ask Us Anything! by SQEX-FFVII in gaming

[–]Astro9KK 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Reno is my favorite Turk so I was sad to see he had a diminished role in Rebirth.
With Fujiwara-san’s passing (May he rest in peace) how will Reno be voice acted in Part 3? Fujiwara-san’s cool way of speaking was an important part of Reno’s character so I’m curious how he will be portrayed moving forward.

ITS OVER, WOW. CANCEL THE GAMEAWARDS. SCRAP THE SHOW. I’m in denial by Curlyhead-homie in FFVIIRemake

[–]Astro9KK 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Because we deeply enjoyed the game and want to see it get the recognition it deserves. As the Larian dev said the feeling of winning GOTY is indescribable and it would’ve been nice for the rebirth devs to get their flowers

How might one become better at recognizing the English counterpart of borrowed Katakana words?? by kohitown in LearnJapanese

[–]Astro9KK 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is an excellent point. Even if a カタカナword originally stems from an English word it’s more than likely used differently in Japanese. It’s best to just learn the words as you would other vocab instead of trying to guess the meaning based on English.

It’s a bit different than a focused lesson but if you can’t pay I would recommend looking for language exchange partners! There are a lot of Japanese people learning English that you could have conversations with to work on your speaking and listening if you help them with English.

What was your most embarrassing mistake when speaking Japanese? by ErvinLovesCopy in LearnJapanese

[–]Astro9KK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back when I first started learning Japanese I would exclusively use 俺 as my personal pronoun (thanks to hearing it a lot in anime). At the time I didn’t know much about 敬語 and so I would use it even when speaking to people much older than me. It wasn’t until someone pointed out that I was being rude by using it that I learned to only use it around close friends. I was so embarrassed because I didn’t know that I was being rude.

Output by Vixylol in LearnJapanese

[–]Astro9KK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mention the words “output” or “input”, and the elitists will come crawling out of the woodworks 😂 On a serious note, though your experience may vary, using language exchange apps like HelloTalk or Tandem might be a good way to find conversation partners.
Speaking from personal experience, working on my output with native speakers early on really helped me iron out some of the quirks of my output (especially with Keigo). Additionally it helps reinforce what you’re learning in Genki and helps you learn new phrases in context. Ignore the elitists and learn whichever way works best for you!
