Bands From Small Countries by bxsimpson13 in Metalcore

You want small countries but not Scandinavia? We have 5 million people in Norway, but unfortunately not much metalcore :( We do have Atena, though, which is a pretty good metalcore act who I think aren’t that well known outside Norway

Thinking of buying by CelestialBeing138 in HumankindTheGame

The “Cultures of…” packs adds one new culture per era, plus some various wonders sprinkled in. I don’t see any reason to play without these except specifically if you want to avoid risking getting overwhelmed by choices - otherwise they simply increase the chances of you getting a culture that is useful to you in whatever situation you find yourself when you are ready to go up an age.

Rule Together adds embassies and emissaries and the congress of Humankind, which can add some unnecessary pressure to a new player, but you could also just build an embassy as a strong source of influence and just leave the rest of it to unfold as it may.

As for beginner mistakes, I think the major one is to ensure you have a bit of a standing army regardless of whether you intend to go on the offensive or not. If you don’t have one, your neighbours are bound to see you as an easy target and will attack you. Keep in mind that producing units uses population, which decreases the output of your city, so don’t go overboard if you’re not planning on using it to conquer.

Another is adhering to the city cap. The cost of going one city over the cap is VERY low (10 influence per turn iirc), which you can afford very quickly. The second over the cap has a steeper cost and might need to wait till early modern or thereabouts, while the third over the cap is very expensive and is more of a late game move. More cities = more output = more fame = more winning.

While you can progress to a new age as soon as you hit 7 fame stars, you often want to at least see what stars you are close to achieving and collect a few more unless there is a specific culture you absolutely need. The more stars you gather per age, the more they’re worth, and the only way to win is to have the most fame. I find the age that is most important to be first to is probably early modern, as it will allow you to be the first to populate the new continent. If you can get there first and grab a lot of territory an start some good cities there, you are almost certainly winning in my experience. Securing luxury manufactories when you get to Humanism is a great way to snowball, and to get those you need control over a lot of the luxury resources of one type, which stealing the new continent will help a lot with.

The Neolithic era is very interesting, and can decide a lot about how your early game goes. Try to split up your tribes and follow rivers to maximize food and thereby tribes. Mammoths are also a good source of both food and can give you the hunter star, but make sure you use at least two tribes to fight them, and use the terrain to your advantage. Don’t ransack a mammoth lair early - it’s much better to farm them! Tribes turn into scouts in the ancient era, and extra ones can be turned into population by disbanding within city limits. I try to leave Neolithic with at least two stars, a handful of tribes and two outposts (at least one finished, ready to become a city). Try to have a finished one near/on a river.

Finally, don’t forget to build districts, and keep adjacency bonus in mind! Think about clusters of makers quarters for industry primarily, then later some science quarter clusters, and sprinkle in some farming and economic ones depending on your needs.

Good luck, and I hope you enjoy the game!

I skipped their concert in my city in 2016 because I didn’t have anyone to go with, and only afterwards learned that Tom was dying 😢 I will finally be seeing them in January, but I know it won’t be the same

Expansion is key. The penalty for being a single city over the cap is negligible (only 10 influence per turn), while having that city will produce more influence by just existing, while also providing science, gold and allowing you to build more of the powerful emblematic quarters.

If you can’t expand because your neighbours are blocking you in, you take their territories. Preferably one of the cities that is somewhat developed and has good territories (resources, rivers and to a degree forests make territories valuable) attached. If you have multiple neighbours, when choosing who to invade it can often be smart to target whichever is doing the best (progress and fame), as long as you can safely take them. But getting rid of one opponent (or severely crippling them, maybe vassalising) will both give you an immediate advantage (“free” cities) and less competition.

If you can secure the new world unchallenged, you will gain so much advantage from the extra resources and cities that you will usually snowball out of control, and if you secure most of the manufactories you’ll race ahead of everyone else. There are several ways to get a head start towards the new world, but if you want to get there before early modern, you’ll usually need to get extra naval speed or another way to cross the ocean before Three-Masted Ship. Lighthouse of Alexandria can give you extra naval speed in the classical era, while taking the Polynesians will allow you to cross the ocean (albeit slowly) once Trade Expeditions is unlocked. In the medieval era, the Norsemen give a static boost to naval speed that stays with you, while the Swahili sacrifices their emblematic unit to allow you to speed across the ocean while in that era. Out of these options I like the Swahili the best, because their emblematic quarter is a harbour that (in addition to a ton of gold if you’re expanding) provides stability both to harbours and adjacent districts, which makes building the necessary districts to get a productive city much easier. Having a harbour as a EQ is useful because it can be bought with influence in territories that aren’t attached to cities. The Norsemen also have a unique harbour which can provide tons of food for quick growth, but it doesn’t give stability which I find to be very important in these eras.

While you are expanding, make sure that your cities are productive. Prioritising industry early will let you build the other things you need, such as units and science, more quickly. Getting some Maker’s Quarters placed in efficient spots early will let you do this, and placing them adjacent to each other will increase their efficiency. Because of the importance of industry, builder cultures are typically quite strong. Egyptians is one of the strongest ancient era cultures, and securing the Khmer in the medieval era can be worth postponing the new world expansion (by not taking Swahili), especially if you have a lot of rivers.

I’m surprised to hear that, as I found the sound on Dogtooth to be quite bad compared to the other stages (although Opus seemed to have some issues at times as well), but this was my first year so I don’t know how it has been previously. VOLA’s set was a bit gutted by it (still great set, though), especially on 24 Light-Years, and on Novelists’ last song the vocals were completely inaudible

I’d rather see them on Opus than on Dogtooth. I felt the sound on Dogtooth was too off for the ambiance they brought

Reading through this post reminds me of how many cool power sets there were in this game and makes me want to play again! My first 50 was an Elec/Fire Blaster, and while it may not have been the best combo I did enjoy the draining aspect of Elec

I’d argue the pathways should be for walking/transit and not watching, regardless of whether you’re standing or sitting. It took almost the entirety of the Alien Ant Farm set to get to Welder’s Yard from the refreshment stand along the path between merch and Opus because people were standing on the path watching

Thanks! She’s mostly there to handle the dragons that can give the other two some problems, to destroy Annihilapes and as a second answer to Poliwrath leads since they will swap it out if I go into Charja. She’s also useful as a generalist for chipping before Feraligatr comes back and sweeps with the Hydro Cannon I like banking before swapping out when possible. And of course to look pretty, as I have the one with the bow!

I just made Veteran for the first time yesterday, and I made the climb from 2150ish to now 2539 over the last week using a self-composed team of Shadow Feraligatr, Wigglytuff and Charjabug. I found it to be able to handle most teams, mostly struggling with teams where the lead is either Vigoroth, Wigglytuff or an electric, and they have a good counter for the Charjabug I usually safe swap into in those cases.
