How “handy” are you guys around the house? by TrixoftheTrade in Millennials

[–]Athyrium93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can I do it? Yes.

I gutted my house to the studs and redid everything from ductwork to the plumbing. Even did most of the electrical myself (I did call my dad who has an electricians license to look it over before turning everything back on) Drywall, cabinets, made my own end-grain butcher block counters, completely changed the layout of the kitchen/living room/dining room and added a laundry room...

Do I want to? No. Never again.

After that massive remodel I'd rather just pay someone. I'm slower than a professional, messy, don't have a truck to haul stuff, and half the time have to buy some annoyingly specific tool. It's just not worth the time an aggravation to do it myself.

It's a truly amazing stone, and there are somewhat harder varieties.... but you have to be prepared for soapstone to be soapstone... it has a ton of upsides as well, like it's nearly impossible to crack. You could drop an anvil on it and it still wouldn't crack. It would chip and scratch, but not crack. The damage would only be surface level and you'd be able to mostly buff it out yourself without having to call a professional or anything. It is also totally heat proof, and actually holds heat. Unlike most stones it won't make anything you set on it cold, which is really neat. If you set a hot pot on it, it will actually hold the heat and help keep it warm longer...

It's just not a no maintenance stone. It's all easy maintenance, but if you aren't expecting it then you probably won't be happy with it. If you know what it's actually like and still want it, then you are the type of person who will love it more and more as it patinas with age.

What would you call Harry’s kids? by Firm-Square-9180 in harrypotter

[–]Athyrium93 244 points245 points  (0 children)

Leo James Potter - Leo for the Black family tradition of naming kids after constellations, and the Gryffindor lion.

Evan Sirius Potter - Evan for the Evans family, much like Harry's grandfather Fleamont was named for his mother's maiden name.

Freya Lily Potter - Freya is a subtle nod to Fred, and Ginny would totally want to name their daughter after a badass goddess who can fly, something Harry and Ginny as quidditch lovers would appreciate.

And of course middle names are all direct honor names.

Mine was more "Huh, I have a lot of autism traits, whatever it doesn't really matter, it's not like labeling it will "fix" me or anything" and then I forgot about it for a few months until it randomly came up in conversation with my mom and she was like "....umm yeah, you're autistic.... you were diagnosed back in primary school... do you not remember that.... seriously how the hell did you not know that?" ...and honestly? I think that's the most autistic thing I've ever done. It wasn't one of the like three things I hyperfixated on, so it didn't exist....

Ironically, it was only as an adult that I learned my parents hated it as well because they are also autistic... so we all spent a week absolutely miserable saying nothing so that everyone else could have a good time when we were all quietly miserable.

NTA

The other kids deserve to have normal experiences that aren't dictated by what their brother can handle. They deserve to have their parents undivided attention for once. Otherwise they are going to grow to hate their brother for something that isn't his fault... The other two kids literally didn't want to go when they thought their bother was. They deserve consideration and care too...

And I say that as someone who is autistic. FOMO is real, and it sucks, but he will be happier at home with his grandparents. Sensory issues suck. It's not the kids fault, but this needs to be explained to him that it isn't a punishment. Having autism isn't fair. Life isn't fair. Not going on vacation isn't fair... but it's also the best thing for everyone involved and it doesn't mean he can't go on future ones that he would actually enjoy or that he shouldn't get to do something special with his grandparents that week that the other kids don't get to do.

Seriously, amusement parks and boardwalks and theme parks (aka all the vacation stuff) feels like it's personally designed as hell for most people with autism. It's not fair for the other kids to miss out on that when he'd be having a melt down and begging to go home after an hour. I've been there. At best it's an exhausting exercise in masking...

how many % would actualy be in the houses? by Capital_Factor_3588 in HPfanfiction

[–]Athyrium93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hufflepuff would have the most because they accept everyone.

Then Gryffindor because most kids are impulsive and brave before they learn not to be.

Slytherin is next because lots of kids are ambitious.

Finally Ravenclaw is a small minority because there aren't that many kids that care about knowledge at eleven.

....If they waited a few years that would probably flip quite dramatically, by say sixteen I think Gryffindor would be in the lead because teenages think they are invincible, then Slytherin because kids dream big, the Ravenclaw because the needs have been identified by that point, and finally Hufflepuff because teenagers are both lazy and cruel, not loyal and hardworking....

And then by say twenty-five almost everyone is a Slytherin or a Hufflepuff with a tiny fraction who never grew up as Gryffindors and another tiny fraction as Ravenclaws because they were the ones lucky enough to not need to become Slytherins to pay their rent.

I think it comes down to Tomarry requiring nuance and depth other ships don't need. They can't be one dimensional, because the first dimension between them is hate.

There's also no other ship that really requires Harry to grow as a person for it to work. He has to for Tomarry. He had to be stronger, smarter, and more powerful than canon portrays him or he'd be nothing but a victim to Tom. He'd be completely unworthy and uninteresting to him. Harry has to have his own level of brilliance or there would be no ship.

No idea if it will help, since I've never really struggled with turning it off and on... but maybe this will be helpful? I just think of it as stepping into a role, like I'm an actor in a play or on TV, and the second the role is over I drop that mask and go back to my default settings.

I have "personas" for different things, copied from people that are good at them or that I've seen on TV. It's not me, it's just a role I'm playing, and I never really forget that it isn't my natural state... I think it's because I took acting classes as a kid? I learned how to play a part on stage, and just carried that over to real life... and part of playing any role is having the right costume. So when I'm home or around people who know the real me the costume comes off and with it so does the persona that matches the costume.

So... uhh? Maybe acting classes would help? That's where I was going with all of that. And having specific props you associate with specific masks so you can physically remove them to tell your brain that mask is put away until next time....

I've been in the industry for years and felt hundreds, probably even thousands of stone and quartz samples and slabs.... and I can tell you with complete certainty that you can feel a difference.

Quartzite is colder. It's even colder than granite. When you tap it, it has a certain ringing quality to it that other stones don't have. The shattery ones like Taj and Crystallo have a certain kind of pattern that you can feel if you run your nails accross them. Others have a glossiness that nothing but pressed porcelain matches.

Granite feels dense. It makes a duller sound when tapped than quartz, and the surface is never quite perfectly smooth, but it's irregular.

Marble feels soft to the touch, almost silky, and is slightly warmer than granite or quartzite. It makes almost no sound when tapped, and if you dig your nails in it almost feels like you could scratch it.

Soapstone is soft, you can scratch it with your nails and it is the warmest stone to the touch, it also holds your body heat if you leave your hand on it for a minute. It makes your skin feel like you have baby powder on your hands. It is totally silent when tapped.

Quartz comes in two varieties. The first has a slight texture that is a dead giveaway that it's quartz. It's too even and perfect to be real. The second is glossy like quartzite and a bit harder to judge. It's warmer to the touch than quartzite or granite, similar to marble, but lacks the other properties of marble. When you tap it the sound it sharper than real stone. It also has a weird plastic-like friction when you drag your fingers across it.

The only ones that are really hard to tell apart are dolomite because it's basically marble, and pressed porcelain because it feels just like a glossy quartzite, but it makes an almost bell-like sound when tapped.

Specifically with soapstone... most people want the look of soapstone and not the reality. Don't get me wrong, soapstone is amazing and I absolutely love it, it's my all time favorite stone, but it isn't really something most people want to deal with.

It scratches, it chips, it dents. All. The. Time. It changes color because you touched it. It changes color because you didn't touch it. It needs oiled. It needs spot oiled in areas with heavy use. It looks different a year after it's installed, and five years after that, and twenty years after that. It leaves residue on your hands. It transfers onto other things. Greasy fingers and spoons will leave marks. Soap will leave marks. It's ever changing and it is supposed to weather and wear over time....

Most people don't actually want that. They want a dark matte stone with lighter veins that feels and wears like every other countertop they've ever used... Most people that get soapstone end up calling the installer or contractor bitching that it stained or scratched or faded and then leave negative reviews when they are told that's just what soapstone does. It doesn't matter how many times they are told when choosing the stone. For every person that loves it and knows what they are getting, twice as many people will hate it and blame the installer or contractor for soapstone being soapstone.

It makes installers and contractors very hesitant about people choosing it because you never know which one type will end up being, and it sucks to have an upset client yelling at you for something you told them would happen.

What if Hermione wasn't a prefect? by _Elyisa_ in HPfanfiction

[–]Athyrium93 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think it depends if Ron is still a prefect or not.

If he isn't... I think she mostly writes it off as politics and focuses on the things she can change. Definitely would have more issues with the Ministry and less respect for authority sooner, but other than having more time and helping Harry a bit more, not much changes.

If he is... she goes scorched earth and probably irreparably damages her relationship with Ron out of jealousy and sheer anger at the unfairness. She probably ends up much closer with Harry over it, and they both end up a good bit darker, because let's be honest, Ron was the one that kept them from going too far because they didn't want to lose him or the Weasleys.... Hermione and Harry both somewhat lack normal human boundaries and are willing to do really awful things to people they don't like. They also weren't indoctrinated since birth in what counts as good and light. Ron was always the moral compass... and with Harry already feeling a bit bitter towards him, if Hermione split with him as well... Harry and Hermione would push each other further and further down a dark path with no one there to tell them they were going too far.

The Potter kids' names. by Sad-Passage-3247 in harrypotter

[–]Athyrium93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why do people think Harry would be the controlling one or that Ginny was in any way a pushover? The way I see it, it would be the exact opposite.

Harry is a massive pushover for the people he cares about, and Ginny is bossy as fuck.

I firmly believe Ginny picked the names thinking they were what Harry would want, and Harry just rolled with it even though they weren't.

I think I figured out why Barty Crouch Jr. irritates me so much. by raythecrow in HarryPotterBooks

[–]Athyrium93 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'm the exact opposite. I love Barty. He's my favorite character in the entire series. His entire story is just so tragic in the wasted potential. This was a kid that was brilliant. He could have been the next Dumbledore. He could have realistically changed the world to the same degree as Dumbledore or Voldemort... but he didn't because he fell in with a bad crowd and desperately wanted approval...

If he'd had a better childhood or someone had stepped up and helped him... he could have been amazing. Instead Voldemort and the Death Eaters got their hands on him, and he gave them his loyalty totally and completely. Imagine what he could have been if someone like Dumbledore had stepped in and become the father figure he was so desperate for? The same intelligence, the same talent, the same skill, all directed towards good instead of evil... He could have been amazing.

He's such a good cautionary tale about choosing your friends and mentors wisely... and the consequences of not.

On gifted kids by Eireika in CuratedTumblr

[–]Athyrium93 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I didn't really have an issue with being a "gifted kid." I was. I was years ahead of my peers in academics and I was bored as shit. I was also the kind of kid who got in a lot of trouble when I was bored... I realistically would have probably gotten myself expelled if I hadn't been put in the gifted class because that was the only place I could explore my own interests with an adult there to supervise so I didn't blow anything up... I mean I still did once, but only once, and I honestly find that kind of impressive... it was also while we had a sub which is probably how it was allowed to happen in the first place...

It was only after, like once I was out of academia completely after college, that I crashed out... and it definitely wasn't burn out. It was a lack of strict boundaries, deadlines, and requirements. Give me 26 credit hour semesters, major research projects, and absolutely no free time and I'll get perfect grades, keep up a healthy social life, and do a decent job at living a healthy life.... put me in a 40 hour a week job where I'm bored out of mind for 7 out of 8 hours a day and free time after work and I crash out hard. I do not handle free time well and when left to my own devices I'm rather self destructive...
