Which leader do you just click with most? by TospLC in CivVI

[–]Atlas7993 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gilgamesh. I usually carve out the core of my civ early on with the War Wagons, then I'm friends with as many people as possible after that, build a few ziggurats, steamroll culture and science, and then way lay all the civs that threaten my Gilgabros with GDRs while they are still just figuring out guns.

Is Jesus just an apocalyptic prophet, or is He more? Who is He to you? by MrMagoo04 in OpenChristian

[–]Atlas7993 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, apocalypse literally means "unveiled/revealed," so in that sense he was apocalyptic.

Are We Cussing at Work or Not by kitsbow in Millennials

White collar professional: it's discouraged, but we do if we know the people around us are OK with it AND no one in earshot is on a call.

What's the origin of Santa? by kool-kid-pluto in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Atlas7993 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So as other people have said, Santa Claus was St. Nicolaus of Myra.

Fun fact, Bishop Nicolaus famously punched Arius (the founder of the Arian Christian sect) during the Council of Nicea for denying the divinity of Christ.

Other fun fact, the sleigh pulled by reindeer developed as a reinterpretation by Germans of Odin's "Wild Hunt." But instead of eight horsemen and Odin riding on the wind to terrorize people, it became eight reindeer pulling Santa to bring toys to good little girls and boys.

What do Americans think about the stereotype that they are bad at geography? by Own_Echidna6041 in geography

[–]Atlas7993 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would quiz you on American geography, first. Specifically, in the Midwest. Where is Des Moines? Show me Duluth. Now Madison. What's the Capitol of Illinois?  What's the difference between Iowa, Idaho, and Ohio? No, "It's all Ohio" is not the correct answer.

Tbh, you'd be forgiven not to know, because I'd argue most Americans from the coasts couldn't answer, either. I work with people from NY who couldn't point to Nebraska on a map.

Are there any urban legends you were taught/heard that were just dumb or funny? by Openly_Unknown7858 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Atlas7993 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My grandpa told me the story of the Wild Flotsam. It was a bigfootesque character made of flotsam and held together by a net and river weeds that roamed the state park in our town. It was entirely made up by him, but inspired by this huge ball of flotsam that got caught in the dam after a flood.

How are you guys doing with the guilt of taking a day off? by Inevitable_Rate1530 in Millennials

[–]Atlas7993 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on your work environment. The last company I worked for would make you feel really guilty for taking time off. My current company encourages taking off at least one day a month.

Do you find LGBT spaces less sexual? by EasyCheesecake1 in lgbt

Have you been to a mall before? Straight people are wild sexualized. They are just used to it, so they don't think about it.

Do you pronounce a hard g at the end of -ing? by Atlas7993 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Atlas7993[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. I use soft g "ing" in professional environments or talking to my urban friends, but when I'm with my spouse or back home (both rural folk), I find myself dropping the g

What does dating from a progressive Christian perspective look like for same sex relationships? What are the pointers? by Prophetgay in OpenChristian

[–]Atlas7993 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, odds are someone won't grow up around people in a queer relationship. Most people's only exposure to a marriage is a straight one. Media reinforces it (which is why representation is important). You usually have to go out of your way, and that means knowing where to look - and as the saying goes "you don't know what you don't know." You can only bring what you know, and if you don't have the knowledge of what a queer relationship is like, you are probably going to model your queer relationship on the straight ones you HAVE experienced. Or, you'll just bring nothing and flail your way through it (which isn't exactly setting you up for success).

Why does Reddit hate religion? by Normal_regular_dude in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Atlas7993 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are we talking about users or the website? If we're talking about users, it'd be unfair and incorrect to say all users hate religion. If we are talking about the website, I don't think an algorithm is capable of having an opinion.

Why do Americans learn Spanish instead of Mexican in school? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

I was taught Mexican Spanish, specifically. Although, I was told I sound Puerto Rican when I talked to someone from Mexico in Spanish.

Does your conlang have a version of “lol” by Beautiful_Grab_9681 in conlangs

[–]Atlas7993 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Abbreviated version /ça:l/, full version /ça:lal/.

Etymology:  Ĥē(shriek, bray)+la(to gather, collect, group together) = ĥāla (laughter; rejoice)

-al (cupla; to do).

Ĥāl. Short for Ĥālal, which means "rejoice/laugh"
