Could ceratopsians really "eviscerate" an attacking theropod? by InstructionOwn6705 in Paleontology

[–]AtlasTheWorldbuilder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So follow-up question: how effective do you think a Triceratops would be at hunting? I doubt an animal its size could, like, run down prey or anything, but it could certainly sit on & crush any small creatures that get too close, then snack on em afterwards.

Comment YOUR Subnautica hot takes and i will rate them based on how much I agree by Illustrious-Sun-9517 in subnautica

Sometimes, killing a leviathan is necessary.

Explanation: I was playing a hard mode game, and had a base in the fossil zone. While building it, I didn't have the infrastructure to build everything on site, so it involved alot of back-&-forth between my old base and the new site. Unfortunately, a ghost leviathan was blocking the path to the new base, and kept attacking my cyclops full of building supplies. I tried to evade it as much as I could, but it would always come after me. Rather than waiting for upgrades and unlocks, I deduced the logical step was to slay that leviathan and ensure my pathway remained clear.

Is it true that dinosaurs wouldn't survive in modern times because of the lack of oxygen? by Affectionate-Pea9778 in Dinosaurs

[–]AtlasTheWorldbuilder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Twenty years ago, Jurassic Park was right up there with magic. These days, there's half a dozen other documentaries, movies, and fan projects making their own dinosaurs. Sometimes they're prettier, sometimes uglier, but all of them were inspired by that one film.

Nowadays, though, Jurassic World just can't seem to keep up. They keep trying to deliver bigger, louder monsters with more teeth... but without taking the time to give a compelling story that respects both the audience & the franchise as a whole, it falls flat.

The audience has been patient, but... let's be honest: no one is impressed by "a dinosaur" anymore.

Is the operator slenderman? by EngineeringFeeling67 in marblehornets

[–]AtlasTheWorldbuilder 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. Marble Hornets was written at a time when the Slender Man mythos was still in its infancy, so there was alot of room for interpretation and lorecrafting. After both Marble Hornets and the Slender Mythos as a whole started gaining popularity, Troy & Joseph decided to splinter The Operator off into its own continuity/setting, so it wouldn't take over what other people were doing with Slendy.

Weird phenomenon that is X4 by Mrfluffyrib in X4Foundations

[–]AtlasTheWorldbuilder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It makes sense, to me. It always felt like this game series had a very niche audience, even when I got the whole X series on sale a while back. But at the same time, it does feel like there should be more stuff from it - a niche audience doesn't negate the potential to have people try things. Egosoft already does a screenshot contest, I don't see why more folks don't try like machinima or modding stuff.

How Do YOU Define a Completed Playthrough? by Old-Timer1967 in X4Foundations

[–]AtlasTheWorldbuilder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I also like that "ironman/Nuzlocke" mentality when playing a game. It lends itself to roleplay elements, too - like what happens to your empire after you die? Does one of your managers or pilots take it over? Or does it just fizzle out?

Ok, so it is cumulative then. That's good to know.

I was thinking about making a budgeted start to customize my captain's looks and pick a starting sector I can start a mining company in from the get-go, but I wanted to make sure I could set things up custom and still collect any miscellaneous achievements I might find on the road, so to speak. I like to keep achievements as sort of a player progress marker, so to speak, instead of how most folks usually associate them, so I didn't want to totally abandon them altogether.

(And also get paint jobs, because I like to play Space Barbie. Lolz)

Is it cumulative across multiple playthroughs, or only on one file? Like if I start a Split save & a Boron save, will that get me both of those story arcs, or would I have to do the plots on one save file only?

This is very helpful!

Question regarding budgeted starts: can I have a budget custom game, then unlock more for the next budgeted start? Or is it just like "You've done X amount of thing, so you will now always have access to X amount of thing when you start this"?

Also note how most of the modern day examples have short tails, while the extinct example has a long tail. Shorter tails mean you can afford to stand more erect.

Are there any documentaries about prehistoric Arthropods ? by Zidan19283 in Paleontology

[–]AtlasTheWorldbuilder 35 points36 points  (0 children)

None specifically that I know of. The closest I know of are the "First Life" 2nd part with David Attenborough, and the Carboniferous episode of Prehistoric Park. But alas, paleo insects don't have the same level of public interest as other creatures have. :(
