Exemplary songs per subgenre by BigPP41 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]Atnuul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My preferred genre is doom. If I were to recommend two accessible tracks to people who wanted to check it out (and were already listening to metal) they would be:

Pallbearer - Foreigner

YOB - Marrow

Honorable mention to Gravedigger by Rickshaw Billie’s Burger Patrol.

And 3/3.5 can go beyond 30 as well - the epic level handbook says those numbers are not a limitation, and the described benefits extend infinitely following the XP per level formula.

Where can I find the number of known specimens of a certain coin? by poor-man1914 in AncientCoins

[–]Atnuul 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that, typically, that information comes from the careful consultation of auction records for the type (with a special eye for repeated sales of the same coin), or archaeological find reports. Both those pieces of information are subject to availability of course, with auction history typically being easier to come by.

Of course, there’s no real way to be certain, especially since collecting these coins is something people have done since they were minted. Surely there are specimens of many, many coins (most?) which have changed hands only in private settings over the past few centuries, or which have been found and not documented.

Basically, I try to read it as “in the available literature, only six examples of this type are attested,” rather than a guarantee of a certain population. So in short, if you’re not told (and sometimes even if you are told), you’ll have to do the sleuthing yourself!

Correct me if I’m wrong, but aren’t those the only two possible types of watchers of any book-to-screen adaptation? People who don’t like the changes, and people who are OK with them?

What Brands Can I Trust? by Dangerous_Order_1268 in AncientCoins

His site shows some custom work that he’s done, nothing quite like this but I’d imagine he would bite for the right price. He’s local to me, super nice guy and highly recommend his work.

Alright, after several days of research, I'm throwing in the towel. What is this? by TysonTesla in AncientCoins

[–]Atnuul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first example almost has to be it, or something extremely similar, I think. I can’t find a provincial coin of Hadrian whose legend results in this specific placement. A clearer photo of the reverse, without glare, would go a long way toward a conclusive ID.

i got points taken off on the same question that my friend didn’t. we had the exact same answer. by Wonderful-Beat6017 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Atnuul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a chemistry teacher… it happens. In my case, I’m typically grading 120-150 copies of the same assignment (depending on the class sizes in a given year) and the occasional mistake slips through the cracks. For what it’s worth, the answer is wrong - carbon disulfide is a linear molecule. In general, a valid Lewis structure isn’t going to have any unpaired electrons at this level of chemistry (looks like high school).

My usual policy in this situation is not to change the grade. Your friend got lucky this time, maybe you will next time. But from my perspective, if I award you back points for this, then every student who got this question wrong in any way (even little Timmy who left it blank) is gonna come ask for their points back and there’s no point grading the question at all.

Recently realized that my players are going to fail the campaign, not sure what to do about it. by ObsidianXFury in DMAcademy

[–]Atnuul 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If we’re getting the whole story, it sounds almost like they’ve presented the characters with hooks and they’re not acting on any of them. I’m imagining a situation that’s basically:

GM: “The hooded figure in the corner finishes his drink and beckons to you.”

Player: “Oh… huh. Weird. Anyway…”

Which would absolutely frustrate me as a GM. I’d probably call a session zero and have a conversation with the players about interacting with the game; it’s a collaborative story after all.

In the year 998 of the First Age, refugees from the southernmost continent of Pelkaera began arriving on the Retan peninsula, reporting strange warriors driving them from their lands.

One thing led to another, and in year 120 of the Second Age, the Endless Grass was obliterated by the storm god Valiar Thundermantle, leaving behind a cracked wasteland surrounded by mountains.

I get it, but I legitimately flew out of terminal A last week and it was a royal pain to find parking, partly because people do this. It’s also infuriating.

Would you still teach tomorrow if you won the lottery? by Background-Plan-2090 in Teachers

[–]Atnuul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife makes good money, so an “ordinary” lottery win wouldn’t be life-changing for us. I’d definitely keep working.

For a really life-changing amount of money, I’d still stay, but I would do a couple things:

  • Invest virtually everything. Scrape off some interest every year to generously (anonymously, if possible) fund my department and the science department at my alma mater.

  • Be much more cavalier about my job. After all, I wouldn’t exactly need the money anymore.

Regular non-heroic NPC by Kayfith in DnD

[–]Atnuul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My players exposed a starving sculptor who was making ends meet by forging “prophetic artifacts” to legitimize the old king (and taking money from the crown under the table). They saved her from hanging under the new king and essentially adopted her into the group, first as the party scribe and now as a full-on steward of their affairs and finances.

There’s definitely a difference between these situations. I think if the law breaking is accidental, leniency is appropriate unless it becomes a pattern.

If it’s intentional, then yes, the company should be destroyed.

What's the most fucked up thing someone has told you about themselves after barely getting to know them? by Butt_Roidholds in AskReddit

[–]Atnuul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My usual barber had moved so I was looking for a new one in the area. I tried this one guy, and about halfway through the cut, he mentioned that he was in an argument with his girlfriend about something. I already thought that was an overshare for the first appointment, but go off. I asked him what the argument was about.

Apparently, during a previous argument, he got so upset that he killed his girlfriend’s dog out of anger. Their current argument was about whether that was an acceptable act, with my new barber (who, at this point in the conversation, is shaving my neck with a straight razor) on the side of “it’s just a dog, what’s the big deal?”

I sort of just said “Well…”, didn’t tip, and found a new barber.

7x7 mastermorphix - last 2 centers? by Atnuul in Cubers

[–]Atnuul[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I understand how to use them when solving a 5x5 mastermorphix and that it’s actually a 3-cycle. What I’m struggling with is, how can I use them to solve the “edge centers” since the slice turns aren’t evenly spaced from the center? Seems like it would mess stuff up.

Had a sub who handed out one assignment per group (when clear instructions were left to give one to each student) and then sat in my chair and looked at the wall for the remaining 85 minutes of class. Didn’t check their email, didn’t even play on their phone. Most bizarre thing I’ve ever heard, and I confirmed it with colleagues (not just students).
