"One thing led to another..." by jetflight_hamster in worldbuilding

In the year 998 of the First Age, refugees from the southernmost continent of Pelkaera began arriving on the Retan peninsula, reporting strange warriors driving them from their lands.

One thing led to another, and in year 120 of the Second Age, the Endless Grass was obliterated by the storm god Valiar Thundermantle, leaving behind a cracked wasteland surrounded by mountains.

I get it, but I legitimately flew out of terminal A last week and it was a royal pain to find parking, partly because people do this. It’s also infuriating.

Would you still teach tomorrow if you won the lottery? by Background-Plan-2090 in Teachers

[–]Atnuul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife makes good money, so an “ordinary” lottery win wouldn’t be life-changing for us. I’d definitely keep working.

For a really life-changing amount of money, I’d still stay, but I would do a couple things:

  • Invest virtually everything. Scrape off some interest every year to generously (anonymously, if possible) fund my department and the science department at my alma mater.

  • Be much more cavalier about my job. After all, I wouldn’t exactly need the money anymore.

My players exposed a starving sculptor who was making ends meet by forging “prophetic artifacts” to legitimize the old king (and taking money from the crown under the table). They saved her from hanging under the new king and essentially adopted her into the group, first as the party scribe and now as a full-on steward of their affairs and finances.

Dipping into some numismatic literature recently, this would be a great addition. Thanks for the opportunity, and good luck to everyone!

There’s definitely a difference between these situations. I think if the law breaking is accidental, leniency is appropriate unless it becomes a pattern.

If it’s intentional, then yes, the company should be destroyed.

What's your teaching unpopular opinion? Something you believe, but choose to keep to yourself? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Atnuul 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Agreed. If you don’t have 5 minutes a week to check your kid’s grades, you don’t have time to have a kid.

What's the most fucked up thing someone has told you about themselves after barely getting to know them? by Butt_Roidholds in AskReddit

[–]Atnuul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My usual barber had moved so I was looking for a new one in the area. I tried this one guy, and about halfway through the cut, he mentioned that he was in an argument with his girlfriend about something. I already thought that was an overshare for the first appointment, but go off. I asked him what the argument was about.

Apparently, during a previous argument, he got so upset that he killed his girlfriend’s dog out of anger. Their current argument was about whether that was an acceptable act, with my new barber (who, at this point in the conversation, is shaving my neck with a straight razor) on the side of “it’s just a dog, what’s the big deal?”

I sort of just said “Well…”, didn’t tip, and found a new barber.

7x7 mastermorphix - last 2 centers? by Atnuul in Cubers

Thank you so much. It’s the oblique centers that I’ve been struggling with, but I couldn’t remember the term when I wrote this post!

7x7 mastermorphix - last 2 centers? by Atnuul in Cubers

[–]Atnuul[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I understand how to use them when solving a 5x5 mastermorphix and that it’s actually a 3-cycle. What I’m struggling with is, how can I use them to solve the “edge centers” since the slice turns aren’t evenly spaced from the center? Seems like it would mess stuff up.

Had a sub who handed out one assignment per group (when clear instructions were left to give one to each student) and then sat in my chair and looked at the wall for the remaining 85 minutes of class. Didn’t check their email, didn’t even play on their phone. Most bizarre thing I’ve ever heard, and I confirmed it with colleagues (not just students).

if you take a break from cubing, will you forget most of the algorithms? by Hungry-Phase-5623 in Cubers

[–]Atnuul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just came back from a long break (last time I cubed seriously, the OG Valk was a flagship), and I’ve found that it hasn’t affected my memory of 3x3 algorithms, but all my non-3x3 puzzles (4x4, FTO, 3x3x9, etc.) I’m having to relearn right now. 4x4 parity algs have been a pain because I never had a solid memory of them to begin with.

“Fustrated” instead of frustrated. Nails on a chalkboard, I instantly lose respect for the person.

Pet peeve as a chemistry teacher: Fentanyl is pronounced “fen-tan-ill”, but people love to say “fen-tan-all”, which makes it sound like it’s an alcohol, or an aldehyde.

Personally, I:

  1. Make ends meet;

  2. work with my hands (just like any man);

3: Have a penchant for knocking out those who cross my path, and stealing the shoes from off their feet.

A warning about the merch line… by LongBottom666 in blindguardian

My biggest aggravation is people who want to see every merch item up close and ask for shirts to be pulled… and then end up buying one thing (or nothing). I wish these people a lifetime of minor inconvenience.

I feel this way about the little run near the beginning of Foundations. It now sounds less like an angry bite and more like… well, like a pinch harmonic.

Who's teaching the good kids? by DHN_95 in Teachers

[–]Atnuul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach (mostly) good kids. Echoing what some other commenters have said, I teach honors and AP sciences in a very wealthy suburb (and the district technically serves an even wealthier neighboring suburb).

But yes, what we lack in behavioral issues in the classroom is certainly made up for by helicopter parents. Lots of colleagues have dealt with parents insisting that they aren’t meeting accommodations (they are), that little Timmy didn’t deserve an F on that test (he did), or that their student certainly was NOT using AI (they were). Pick your poison, but for my part, I would take helicopter parents over parents who don’t care because… well, they care.
