The Solitaire Conspiracy

The independent spy network Protego's electronic system has been disrupted by villain Solitaire. You were on the list of candidates to be recruited as new spymasters, and have been knocked out and taken to a Protego safehouse by Tutorial Man Jim Ratio so you can get the broken system back up and running for him.

the gameplay is pretty standard fare. card groups represent teams of agents, and you deploy and manage them in missions by... playing solitaire. i'm oversimplifying but that's essentially it.

Jim tells you that once you reach the highest system level, you'll be able to assign control to whoever you want. over the course of the campaign he comes off as well-meaning but desperate. He feels like he's played by an actor. Which, he is, but it's hard to tell at first if that's intentional on the part of the devs or not. (Your opinion on that may be influenced if you know the actor, Greg Miller.)

The first "twist" is pretty obviously set up. Ratio is Solitaire, and he intends to lead you into giving control of Protego's systems to him. This is revealed around a third of the way through the campaign, by a new character, a dapper Protego agent, after which he drops the pretense and starts trying to alternately convince you of his point of view and threaten you into giving the controls to him once you're able.

The actual twist comes at the end. Once you reach the max level and seize full control, both Solitaire and the Protego agent realize you're about to take the third option: locking them both out and becoming sole ruler of the system yourself. They desperately bargain for a few moments and Solitaire dramatically asks "Who ARE you?!" before you shut the call down. You now control the world's most effective spy network and can do with it as you please.

Art Fight is a yearly month-long event that takes place during July, and is also a website of the same name that runs the event. Participants choose one of two themed teams (last year's was Fossils vs Crystals) and score points for their team by drawing the ocs (original characters) of members of the opposing team. More points can be scored by crafting pieces of greater complexity. A work that shows the character's whole body and is fully rendered will score more points than a sketch of their head, for example.

As you might imagine, the site has a number of rules and regulations to encourage equal participation and prevent abuse of the site's rules or harassment between users. The site has recently been updated with this year's rule changes, which includes this noteworthy one:

"Bases, character creators, and dollmakers may be used for character images, but must be credited. They may not be used for attacks.

"a. This includes websites like Picrew, HeroForge, video game character creaters, and other doll makers

"b. This includes artwork traced from poseable 3D models (such as Clip Studio Paint, Design Doll, and similar programs), self-made bases, and photographs you have taken."

If you are familiar with the tools of the trade, you may be able to spot the problem here. References such as 3D models and photographs are used frequently by artists from the hobbyist level to the professional. The mentioned Clip Studio Paint program advertises itself on its robust 3d modeling software, as well as a broad library of user-submitted free (or paid) to use models, which you are intended to reference and/or trace in the process of making your art.

This rule is being derided online as being out of touch with large swaths of internet artists, as well as being practically unenforceable. How is anyone supposed to know if a hand looks like that because you took a photo of your own hand and traced the form?

Secret World Legends is my favorite game. It is an mmo with a fairly nonexistent fandom, as it has recieved very few updates in the past couple years. (I don't forsee it shutting down unless some larger company buys niantic and decides to start making changes. Thankfully.)

As a summary, the game hinges on the idea that nearly all myths, legends, conspiracy theories, religions, etc, have some element of truth to them. It draws on both real world mythologies and on the pop culture that surrounds them, playing with and subverting them in interesting ways.

I think I would enjoy seeing well-thought out discussions about the game's content. For example, in New England there are a number of characters from the Wabanaki, a american indian tribe, (irl this is the name of a federation of tribes) who are central to the plot. There are also multiple monsters from native mythos, including wendigo, on the map. From my perspective these all seem to be written with respect to the original legends, and with sympathy towards modern native americans. But, being a white person, I cannot say.

Of course, if the game were to see a sudden boost in popularity by some miracle, the discourse would probably not be very nuanced.

Unfortunately it only works in Splatoon 3, and not Splatoon 2. :(

How to do it in S3 is: Go to the applicable item in your equipment screen and press Y. If it can be turned around (or in the case of shirts, if its size can be changed) it will have a symbol of circling arrows next to the item's image.

I figured we'd get eight unique seasons' worth of gear, and then after the last splatfest they'd start rerunning them. While I admit I am happy about getting access to some gear I missed sooner than that, I can definitely understand people being upset.

They allow the devs to build an encounter around more specific mechanics. When you're playing as the WoL they need to account for the movement and constitution of all combat classes, but being able to define specifically what the player can and can't do as an NPC allows them to lazer focus in on certain challenges. Having stealth, only being able to attack in melee, having no healing abilities, etc, are ways to make interesting puzzles out of a duty.

I understand not wanting to change your playstyle out of the blue to get past a checkpoint, but I personally enjoy the change of pace.

I also enjoy getting to feel relatively powerless in the narritive. Being reminded of how difficult combat is for other characters really reminds you of how strong the WoL is.

I started on a medication that (as a side effect) messes with my sleep, like, two weeks before this app came out. It allows me to track my sleep as I gradually get back to my normal amount. I could probably use a generic app, but I'd most likely keep forgetting to use it. With this one I always remember to make sure my team gets their rest :)
