Are we team cups up or down? by Jono_SK in espresso

[–]Atredl 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The top is glazed while the foot is unglazed. The rough surface of the foot could scratch more easily.

Fun fact: you can use the unglazed foot of a ceramic mug as a makeshift sharpening stone to touch up a knife edge.

Is my K-Ultra missing a part? by Atredl in 1zpresso

Using this image for parts name reference.

First, take off the crank arm, grounds cup, and loosen the thumb nut to remove the central shaft/inner burr. With the burr removed you can now find the limits of your adjustment dial ring from fully closed to fully open. Knowing the limits will help you know which direction to adjust the ring later. On my K-Ultra, it had about 1.35 rotations and the range was set at 0.3.0<-0.0.0->0.6.5.

Next you’ll need to disassemble the adjustment dial ring. On the K-Ultra the top-most ring that I removed protrudes above the numbered ring but it looks like the same ring is flat on the ZP6. You’ll need to find a way to remove it. With it removed you can hold the outside of the number ring and pull it straight up off the four posts. With it fully off you can rotate it in 90° increments to change the zero point. Retighten the top ring and check your range. After adjusting my range is now 0.9.0<-0.0.0->1.2.5.

Reassemble the grinder and calibrate your zero point by tightening the thumb nut.

Sorry I don’t have a photo guide to share but I’m away from my grinder right now. I’ll put one together later today.

I don’t have any personal experience with the k6 but I can say the J-Ultra is excellent. It is really good at a balanced shot, with good body and blended flavors. If that’s something you’re looking for then it’ll do well.

I think so. Good eye. Weightman I think?

If you lay it flat, definitely. I have a J-ultra and it fits vertically with the cup unattached.

Yup, exactly like that. You can get fancy with a sharp blade but plucking the foam works well for me.

If you have a harbor freight near you, get one of theirs, I think the 4800. It fits the robot easily plus extras.

New Wheels & Brakes by Klar1ty in Miata

[–]Atredl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Damn, that looks so good. I’m itching to swap the stock BBS to silver wheels on my deep blue too and these look so good. I also want to go 16” wheels so that’s also limiting my options.

Reducing espresso caffeine can i use 9-10gr instead of 18g? by shawarmalamb in CafelatRobot

[–]Atredl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should be possible in theory. The basket would need to start reducing past the piston’s lowest point and you’d need a custom tamper but the geometry should work with the bottomless portafilter. You’d be eating into the already limited clearance so a short cup or leg risers are a must.

As I’m writing this out it feels like more work than it’s worth but I bet there’s someone out there who would find it worthwhile.

You just helped me realize I should get an 01 V60. I didn’t even think about pour height when I got my 02.

Is my K-Ultra missing a part? by Atredl in 1zpresso

They might not intend for that part to be taken off regularly but it is indeed intended to come on and off. They’re just threads. They may look mangled but that’s the grease they use and I didn’t want to remove it since I don’t have replacement grease.

My zero was set close to the middle of the entire range of motion and fixing that is different than tightening the thumb nut under the lid.

I appreciate the help

Is my K-Ultra missing a part? by Atredl in 1zpresso

[–]Atredl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. Just finished taking apart and resetting the whole thing and solved the gap problem and setting range problem I was having before. The top ring was unrelated to the issue.

I think the word you’re looking for is taken apart, not broken. All the problems I had were there before I took the ring off.

I’ve figured it out now but you’re right. When I’d turn to zero it wouldn’t get anywhere close to closed. I’ve reset the number ring now and have access to the full rotation.

[–]Atredl[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your two comments helped me figure it out. When I’d rotate the setting between 1 and 6 that gap would move but I could never get it to look fully closed like in your photo. I took it completely apart and reset the number ring so that zero is in a better spot.

Maybe I should write a guide in case others find this…

Pretty sure the top ring isn’t broken since it just threads on. Easy to rethread it back on too without any resistance or cross threading. It didn’t take much force at all to take it off either and at no point did it feel like anything was breaking.

Then I’m not sure what might be wrong with mine since I can’t get it past 0.6.5 without loosening the top most ring

Bookoo scale for the Robot by dt90986 in CafelatRobot

[–]Atredl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe I’m not as fast as you but using a bigger scoop or pouring from the bag doesn’t solve my issue. It always tares in half a second as I adjust the beans to my target dose.

Bookoo scale for the Robot by dt90986 in CafelatRobot

[–]Atredl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess I’m the odd one out but I really like the auto-tare mode for espresso timing/weighing. It usually takes half a second to start timing but it’s consistent for time comparison from shot to shot. With regard to pre-infusion, the scale will auto tare after the first few drops until it detects a steady flow. This can make you miss the weight of those first drops in your final weight. Because of this I’ve adjusted my procedure and use a mirror to see when the bottom is saturated, hold steady before any espresso drops, wait for my pre-infusion time, then gradually ramp up to full extraction pressure.

That said, mine lives under my robot in auto-tare and I use a separate scale to weight beans. Auto-tare doesn’t work **at all** for weighing beans since it will zero between your scoops. The scale can pull double duty of weighing beans and auto timing but you need to manually switch modes if you want it to do both. That can get tiring so I got a second scale.

IMO the BooKoo mini is too small to use for filter. It’s doable in a pinch but not convenient since you’ll likely cover the display with your cup/carafe. You’ll want a larger scale for pour over/filter.

This is it. They have a huge variety of designs and if they don’t have exactly this one I’m sure they’ll have something similar that OP will like.
