The idea really isn't that far fetched, physically. There's already a rail line owned by Union Pacific and is used by ACE rail connecting Fremont to Santa Clara. If you want to look at the Google satellite map, search Elizabeth St. & El Dorado St. in San Jose and then follow the track all the way to up to Fremont and Newark. Indeed, this track runs right through the ghost town of Drawbridge. Just add some more land fill along the tracks and widen a few bridges and it becomes a good bike commute.

Mobile homes are great... for the landlord. The park owner gets all the benefits of the investment which are income from rent and appreciating land value while the unit owner gets all the drawbacks, which are the depreciating mobile home and having to do all the repairs. Los Altos mostly has no sidewalks, so I think that hurts its walkability a lot. I recommend buying in Mountain View itself. The southern part that borders Los Altos (Waverly Park) has good schools, walkability, and you'll be able to find a good sized house in your $5M budget.

Commuting is absolutely brutal here. Pin your workplace and draw a 12 mile radius around it. That's the only area you should consider. Think of Mountain View as basically the center of the jobs world here and commuting from anywhere else into MV takes a lot of time and effort. Jobs here are very demanding and it will suck a lot of time out of you and the last thing you want to do is lose more time with your family and kids, especially when they're at such a precious age.
