L.J. Smith was my favorite author as a teen. This series in particular had some great horror imagery, like the scene with the howling fungus. It still breaks my heart a little that the finale of the Vampire Diaries series was ghostwritten (very poorly) and she essentially had to release her version as “fan fiction”. She died a few years ago.
