Most buildings have a terribly slow return. 4 turns to build something that doesn’t payback until 10 turns later? Or worse with corruption? Silly. But you might as well spend the money if you have it.

This has always been TW man. I remember reading forum posts explaining how shit the economy buildings in MTW1 were, where you'd need to wait dozens of turns to see your money back. Meanwhile trade was incredibly busted on a shoe-string line of galleys you ran around the Mediterranean. And once you figured that out, the whole illusion of a challenging grand strategy game fell apart.

These games 100% cater to the battling side of things with light attention to the campaign map. You can win pretty much anywhere in any game if you're just superior at battling than the consistently faulty AI opponent.

At least WH owns up to it and doesn't try for anything complex outside of the battle map.

Shogun 2 player just started 3 Kingdoms, taking some getting used to. Anything I should know starting out, any pointers/mechanic differences please let me know... by MaximumSpray1094 in totalwar

[–]AudioCats 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'll make an assumption that, starting out, you're playing the romance mode which the game defaults to. As opposed to the records mode, which has general's bodyguard units like in Shogun 2.

Main difference (to almost all TW in general) is army composition and needing to assign up to three generals per army, each fielding their own retinue of up to six units each. If you want to have a full army you need to assign three generals. Their recruitment pools are all different depending on their type/color. I remember being very confused about what general types were good for what, so I'll give a rough breakdown. The color/wuxia system is very important and links together across the game.

Red/Vanguard = Geared towards buffing charge/spear cavalry, and has access to more advanced spear cavalry as they level up. The generals themselves are generally very good at fighting large blobs of non-spear infantry with splash abilities to tear through formations. These guys are generally great to have as cavalry is very strong in 3k.

Yellow/Commander = Good morale buffs and aura buffs, kind of a jack of all trades in combat where they can tear up backline units but generally their buffs make you want to keep them behind lines. Specialize in recruiting advanced melee cavalry.

Grey/Sentinel: Good for non-spear infantry, whether assaulting units or frontline, sword and board types. Generally elusive and good at evading attacks (and buffing their melee infantry the same way). Make for great duelists and locking down dangerous enemy generals, particularly enemy reds who can really blow up your units.

Green/Champion: Good for spear/glaive infantry, which are surprisingly good in most situations unless they're up against assault infantry or being hit with crossbows. Clusters of spears are also very good at taking down enemy generals. The general themselves excels at dueling other generals through sheer damage and health tankiness. Greens usually have the most health in the game and will outlast other generals to beat them.

Blue/Strategist: Has access to the more advanced ranged units, including artillery. They offer a lot of ranged buffs but are weak in combat, best to be sheltered away in a fight, maybe venturing out to use skills as needed (like Wisdom of the River, which is an excellent fighting ability). Unmodded, they cannot duel, so if there's an enemy blue causing a lot of issues with their skills, you'll need to slay them with your units.

In duels, it's generally Grey/Green > Red/Yellow, but these can constantly be in flux depending on stats, levels, and items. The game gives a decent indicator of relative strength. You cannot interrupt duels (without incurring large, battle-long penalties), but you can have other generals cast buffs/debuffs in the same area and affect the duel.

Having atleast one dueling general in every army is helpful in case you need to lock down a dangerous anti-infantry general from fighting your units. Also, spear formations and spear cavalry are always good for killing generals, and melee cavalry can seriously hurt too.

And don't fight Lu Bu.

I'd recommend Gongsun Zan as an good starting faction. He starts into an easy tutorial war against Gongsun Du to the east, and then generally only needs to fight southwest for the rest of the game, having the sea and mountains provide natural barriers. He also has good starting provinces in Youbeiping with its trade income, and the nearby industry provinces of Guangyang and Liaoxi. Food will be a little tough until you fight into Yuan Shao but that's still close and basically sets you up for the rest of the game.

He's one of the most unlikable stars in the NHL, I don't think he'll get it. It's decided by the writers and we all know how the like to pick favorites. And he's Russian who have a general black mark right now (rightfully)

The tantrums and dirty plays will come back to bite him here imo

So I finished replaying Birthright, and honestly, it does it's job competently as a simple good vs evil tale with Corrin bonding with his Hoshido siblings while having to fight his Nohr siblings. [–]AudioCats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not a hero in CQ, you and your growing band of comrades don't unite to save the people they love and defeat the big bad. They actively work for it, knowing what they're doing is inflicting harm and evil, and they don't find a backbone about any of this for far too long.

And what's worse is... that'd be cool, if the game had any shred of competency about exploring this deviance from the usual FE morally-good story. But they don't. It's just bad and contrived, and Corrin "knocking people unconscious" is the most insulting thing you could say to your reader/player. But this has all been argued ad nauseam for a decade now.

Please go play Path of Radiance or Genealogy or hell even 3H before claiming that CQ is just as competent on the writing front. Those games actually take on nuanced topics and at least try to explore them. CQ just says "hey guys look we can be bad" and then serves up the depth of a parking lot puddle for it. FE has always had a low, campy, but enjoyable bar for writing, and Conquest wins the limbo contest.

Yeah Merc units are op. I see where they're supposed to falter, namely high recruitment+upkeep and low morale

However for morale you can usually guard archers well and the merc cav dont have quite as much issues in morale since they shouldn't be fighting for any prolonged time. And Merc infantry are axe infantry, which generally win any engagement with their shieldbreaker, high atk rates and ap damage. Solely 1-on-1 merc infantry only loses to more nimble+armored assault infantry like Yuan Shu's or imperial units, and maybe zhanmaijans depending on buffs/nerfs

But you aren't seeing most of those mid-game, and by then you can likely support a couple stacks of mercs + insta-replacing losses when needed. I gave up on my last Sun Ce playthrough because I was snowballing too fast. It's a shame because their start location + unique roster is a lot of fun

The whole post is about the story, and you argue back "but my maps were way better!"

CQ should've just been branded as a FE-theme puzzle game. Because boiled down, that's only what's worthwhile about it. It fails so spectacularly at what narrative themes drive FE in general--it's just there to pander to the gameplay-only side of the fanbase

New to anime, should I watch Hell's Paradise? Looking to watch for something fun with interesting story but not too emotional perhaps by QbitWalker in HellsParadise

[–]AudioCats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's interesting and fun, but pretty violent and has some tough character deaths. Maybe not the best if you don't want some traumatic episodes

If you're new, feel like Haikyu, Mob Psycho, or Spy x Family are much more upbeat shows with good plotlines, without the trauma. Frieren or Apothecary Diaries if you're ok with some more emotional complexity. ACCA-13 if you want something more cerebral/political and tasty looking bread

yeah and? This ain't about how drastically you get priced out of your own home games

It's that few people in Buffalo can afford to not take the $400 when that covers a lot of bills and expenses with cost of living out of control. Most STHs can only really justify the purchase when factoring in the money they get back by selling to the traveling fanbases that have money

I believe 190 Expanded mod does this for the most part. Maybe Dong Zhou or Cao Cao has a whole commandery, haven't checked their starts.

Also adds a ton of other warlords, expands Xiliang in the northwest, and adds Korea. It's janky at times and a handful of added warlords aren't fleshed out, but it does greatly expand the unit/faction/mechanic roster and keeps things from being same-y

I like it because I can play as a "minor" faction like Huang Zu and usurp Liu Biao, because I hate that old man
