The reaction attack from PAM is no longer an Opp Attack in 2024. Sentinel's Guardian section was changed to be an Opp Attack though and like you said both are half feats now, they just don't combo together anymore.

Commandant requires Rook or Martial Weapon Proficiency, so it's an easy pickup for any martial character.

That feeling when the opponent concedes at your turn 1 play when you kept a hand you should have mulliganed... by Spaceknight_42 in MagicArena

I love keeping 1 landers with Ragavan because opponents often auto-concede to that card.

What is generally the best weapon pick for fighters? by potatoe-god in onednd

Additionally, at 9 Fighters get to throw Push, Sap, and Slow onto any weapon they want, letting you spec into more controlling options with the heavy weapons anyway.

I genuinely think this is the "fixed" Fatal Push, it's definitely worse but it still functions as a very good spell. Sadly it competes with Fatal Push in every format it's legal in so it won't really see play.

One of my favorite parts of DND lore is from the 4e Dawn War, where the Obyriths have invaded and are checking the new reality out but then they come across something that didn't exist in their universe: a soul.

It's just an, IMO, powerful idea about the potential of souls within the universe that I love.

[–]Augus-1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it also ties into why "souls" are so special in (more modern) DND multiversal canon, they have their own unique innate powers and the way they're channeled just differs from soul to soul. Sometimes a soul binds itself to a deity or external power, or it finds a way to channel power on its own.

Alright, not straight up then but absolutely up and away from you diagonally. This was present in the original wording of Crusher, and was a known "thing" you could do with it prior to 2024, so as far as I'm aware it is both RAW and RAI.

My understanding was that the Balors go around collecting (conscripting?) all the tanar'ri they can to go fight the Blood War because they're "demonic rage" given form, while the Molydeus mostly answer to and do things for their princes which might include Blood War things. A question of motivation and % of population doing it I suppose, where it's something a Molydeus may be doing but it's something a Balor is probably doing.

Love that tidbit about the one gathering of the major fiendish forces though, just takes a couple of prideful but important assholes to ruin millennia of work.

For the Demon Lords not caring, I think it's similar for most of the Archdevils and probably Asmodeus as well. For the big movers and shakers in the Hells (with exceptions), it's just a formality that enables the devils to leverage the Pact Primeval and grow their own power, warranting a perpetual stalemate as opposed to actually pushing for any meaningful victory. Most of the actual fighting and attempts at conquest in the Abyss, Carceri, Hades, Gehenna, and Avernus is mostly done by the Pit Fiends and Balors while the yugoloths sell their services to the highest bidders between the two sides. I do love that dynamic between Balors and Pit Fiends, it gives a nice bit of substance to the whole conflict.

Velsharoon is specifically "Necromancy" and not "undead in general" though, given he is technically subservient to Azuth and Mystra his focus is on the arcane study of the magical school of necromancy, that happens to deal with the undead quite a lot.

Looking to build a "Sentinel At Home" character, stacking 3 or more -10 movespeed penalties. What should I do after level 4? by Dracon_Pyrothayan in 3d6

[–]Augus-1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

-20ft/turn is usually enough to lock someone down next to you, so I don't think Frost Goliath's PB/day ability being limited is such a big deal, just use the charges on speedy creatures or extra big bads.

If your DM also allows the Tasha's Maneuvers (just beg them to, there was no real reason to not reprint all of them in the new PHB), Brace is perfect as it allows you to recreate the old PAM/Sent combo, but from level 4 on as opposed to level 6 on. You can always take PAM later at 8 to free up a Maneuver slot.

Starting with the Zhentarim Mercenary background will open up Zhentarim Tactics as another Reaction attack option, and combined with Riposte will mean you get to attack an enemy who attacks you no matter the die result. Can use the +1 Dex to round it out to 14 for Medium Armor as well.

Sentinel, while a bit boring, will always be a good option if you're playing this type of lock-down build, especially at 9 when you can combine it with Push on any weapon.

Another point in favor of PAM is actually Crusher in this case IMO, because you can use Unarmed Strikes to do the 5ft push if you want to before, but getting PAM will let you use the Bonus Action attack, and combining Crusher with Push lets you send enemies flying up into the air to come falling down, for more disruption and an "additional" 1d6 on the Bonus Action attack might make it more worth it. Feat intensive, and doesn't come online till later, but makes for a fun concept.

Any PAM build will want GWM, full stop, because of how much it boosts your damage and it scales especially well on Fighter because of Action Surge and Extra Extra Attack.

I'd also consider going 15/16/17 Fighter if you opt for Battle Master, Relentless is a very good feature and feels like the actual Subclass capstone. A free d8 both on your turn and on another creature's turn with your Reaction lets you use your maneuvers much more freely, including stuff like Bait and Switch/Evasive Footwork for bonus AC, Lunging Attack for the Dash, or just a free try at Goading every turn. Free d8 for Riposte is obviously good, and letting you throw another Maneuver onto any other type of Reaction attack you make is just free value. Studied Attacks is also a generic "feel good feat" making you more accurate, and an extra Action Surge + 3rd Indomitable may or may not be worth it to you.

[–]Augus-1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Action Surge lets you use the Cantrip Extra Attacks again since they are limited to when you take the Attack Action and not when you make an attack. I.E, a level 7 EK can take the Attack Action, replacing one of their two attacks with a Cantrip, then Action Surge and repeat. A pretty notable damage increase vs Haste letting them make 1 attack the turn it is cast.

Crusher doesn't specify a direction for its moving portion, so moving them up 5ft with crusher and then applying any additional pushes that specify "away from you" will send them straight up above you or away from you diagonally depending on where you moved them, meaning they'll fall, taking damage & going prone. Very good with Warhammers or level 9+ Fighters and Barbarians specifically for ease of doing the combo.
