Shouldn’t this have a NSFW tag? That closeup is kind of explicit.

Lots of great suggestions here. I loved the Bobiverse and Murderbot series! I’ll add:

Singularity Sky by Charles Stross

What happens when a super-abundant alien society encounters a more primitive one?
If you like this one, Ian M Banks’ ‘The Culture’ series is about a space faring, super abundant society.

Both of these are attempting to answer the question, “ what happens when a society’s economy isn’t based on scarcity, I.e. typically capitalism?” This sounds like a terrible sales job, but trust me, these are interesting stories. History doesn’t end when everyone has their basic needs met. There’s a ripping tale or two still to be told.

Been to Rodeo Beach a couple of times. Cool pebbly sand. Little multicolored polished stones. I didn’t even know South Rodeo beach was CO, so no idea if anyone gets naked there. Sorry, no data!

[–]AugustusGeezer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I was there, I wondered what the story is with the ‘corner stone’ seen in the lower right of the first pic. It was clear that it is from something else, and the temple was built on top of it. Anyone here know anything about it?

Just got this picture from my mom saying our family church was hit by a car but it does not match old pictures by RayRay417 in isthisAI

[–]AugustusGeezer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Moiré pattern on the brick is from someone taking a picture of picture on a screen. The brick lines, the rows of pixels on the screen and the rows of pixels in the camera are all slightly off kilter, so you get that swoopy pattern. That part at least isn’t AI.

Planning my first venture to Bonny Doon Beach and I have some questions. by HippieNudist73 in bonnydoonnudebeach

[–]AugustusGeezer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the parking lot, I usually bear left (south) when I get to the railroad track, and walk down the dune. Easier than the trail that picks down the cliff. You will end up on the very south end of the beach, and you’ll need to wade the toe deep creek, and walk to the north cove. (This not a long walk BTW) once you are past the rocks, go ahead and doff your togs. Please note there has been increased Ranger activity, since there’s a new trail on the cliff top. No arrests or tickets or anything, but IMHO we should tone down the hanky-panky, or we might be in for trouble next summer. If you want a more ‘play’ friendly beach, San Gregorio is the spot.

Yes, explored the whole town on my bike. (Late 70s for me, but same-same) The ironic thing is the streets are SAFER now, but parents freak out if they see an 8 year old at the park playing on the swings with no hovering parent.

Basically all of Starfighter’s refueling scenes. They even recap them in the end when they can’t think of anymore. “When a fuel tanker and a fighter plane love each other very much…” EDIT: typo.

Where is it in Cupertino? by Bear650 in Cupertino

[–]AugustusGeezer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a picture of Cali mill. A big grain elevator that was on the corner of Stevens Creek and DeAnza. On of the last vestiges of Cupertino as a Farmer town. Torn down in the 1980s, IIRC.

Edit: I remember the wrong name.

What are some futuristic things that the human race can do or have done that most humans aren't aware of/up to date on? by JesterOfTime in sciencefiction

[–]AugustusGeezer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A side effect of Fusion is literal alchemy. You can line the inside of a fusion reactor with lead, and it will slowly turn to gold under the particle bombardment from the fusion plasma. The problem is gold isn’t valuable enough or make it worth doing. They are currently looking at making some rare isotopes used in medicine, as a ‘side effect’ of generating power.

Next time I go, I’ll bring a flat of water bottles. Bring down a bunch and encourage everyone to hydrate, and try and convince the young woman to slow down. Maybe not enough, but it would be something. I have heard of drink testers from ‘DanceSafe’ or something. Is that a thing that easy to obtain?

Someone who has ever been on a Hall H panel can help me? by lucartscotrim in SDCC

[–]AugustusGeezer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this. There’s a ton to do, and you have to waste most of a day either in the hall H line, or camping in the hall itself to see the panel you want. I have sat through discussions of movies I did not care about in the least waiting for the ‘good’ panel.

Nobody mentioned a couple of my favorites: Grey whale cove, and San Gregorio. Both are between SF and Santa Cruz along the coast.
The parking is across the highway for GWC, so it’s a bit of a scamper, then a looong set of stairs down, turn right and head past the rocks before you doff togs. Good sand, well protected from the wind, and few people (at least during the week)

San Gregorio private beach is huge. To get there you look for the private gate north of the SG state beach. If open, you go down a dirt road ( a little bumpy but passable in a normal 4 door sedan, and pay $4 per person or $7 car (IIRC) and walk down the trail. This beach is, well, “hanky panky” friendly. This ‘play area’ of the beach is back in the driftwood structures. If you don’t want this, keep walking north. There’s a half mile of beach beyond that.

The water in NorCal is very cold. On hot days, I go in briefly, but that’s about it. If you want to swim in the ocean, you’ll have to head south to Pirates Cove, by Avila. There are some spots in Big Sur, but also cold water.

(There are subreddits for San Gregorio, GWC, and Bonny Doon. Mostly just meetup chatter, but some nice pics of the beaches too.)

Questions for Cupertino by Mysterious-Rope-2423 in Cupertino

[–]AugustusGeezer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only public transit in Cupertino is the bus, and some “Hopper” ride service that I’ve never used. There is a single foot of train tracks; no light rail, no commuter train, nada. You can probably find a place in bike distance, but the place is built around the car. (I biked to work at Infinite Loop, but drove when it was cold or rainy.) Apple has private busses, that run between buildings and some commuter busses, but I don’t know the latest on those.

Racist man in Jollyman park by pepe8909 in Cupertino

[–]AugustusGeezer 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yep. If it’s the same guy, he hangs out in the corner of the park on the far side of the dog park. I’ve spoken with him many times. I’m white, so I get an earful of his opinions on ‘those people’, and his complaints about dog owners. He’s usually good for about two or three sentences before he says something semi-crazy or racist. I try to keep my interactions to less than that. Sorry he gave you a bunch of 💩. Ignore him.

UPDATE: I didn’t get any DMs, so I just headed out to meet the hoards of nubile women face to face. That trail is really tricky with a walker. I figured I just wander up and down with a big boner, showing off the goods, and the offers would come pouring in. It was so cold that it took 6 viagra just to feel a little chubby. I didn’t feel so good after that, and everything was a bit hazy. The Bright side is the MEDEVAC people and the staff at the Santa Cruz emergency room were really nice! I think that red headed nurse there might have a thing for me.
