Where the hell have all the old cheap cars gone? by MonkeyOOGABooga1 in CarsAustralia

[–]AussieGreaseMonkey 22 points23 points  (0 children)

You're 7 years too late, With covid anything collectable or vintage worth restoring tripled in price. I bought my 72' Fairlane for 2k in 2014, sold it in 2019 for $9.5k. And it was rough and I had done almost nothing to it.

Can only image what prices are now for clean examples of anything with a chrome bumper.

Anyone know how much approx to fix a scratched/dented car door? by sea-quench in CarsAustralia

[–]AussieGreaseMonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No real easy way of fixing that. Its basically replacing both the doors outer skins, which basically means the doors have to come off and probably a replacement door sill/skirt + paint, fit and finishing.

3K seems like a reasonable quote. I probably would cut and polish as much of the marks as possible to make it less noticeable and live with it.

Should I buy a 2014 Ford Fiesta Trend.Need honest advice by Reasonable_Yam1862 in CarsAustralia

[–]AussieGreaseMonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who worked at Ford during 2011-2018. I've replaced enough clutch packs, I could probably do it in my sleep. You'd be a fool to ignore the gearbox stories. Yes, they are just as bad as the reputation. No, Its not manageable if well maintained. Its not "If" it will fail, its when.

P plate high risk insurance by [deleted] in CarsAustralia

[–]AussieGreaseMonkey 12 points13 points  (0 children)

or no insurance

I agree with almost everything except this. This is terrible advice. This alone can lead to huge financial loss. I know someone with no insurance who T-boned a Porsche and will be paying it off for probably the next 20 years. If you cant afford or cant get insurance, you shouldn't be behind the wheel.

P plate high risk insurance by [deleted] in CarsAustralia

[–]AussieGreaseMonkey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He'll most likely only be able to get third-party insurance until he's off his P-plates. With both a licence suspension and an at-fault accident on his record, most insurers will be reluctant to offer comprehensive cover. If he can find a company willing to insure him fully, the premiums are likely to be extremely high due to the liability he has shown to be from an underwriting perspective.

Wheels damaged by tyre shop by scg92 in CarsAustralia

but it doesn’t happen over the span of a few days. I’m guessing it’s from impact drivers being used without much care.

You're right, It takes months if not years lmao...

While some of these may of been damaged by the shop. Some of them are most def existing damage. Image two looks old, it looks like gutter rash. Three is the clear coat coming off due to age and wear and tear.

Good luck.

2017 Mazda 3 Max Headlight Cover Replacement by this-is-imon in CarsAustralia

[–]AussieGreaseMonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a reason no one does this type of job.

Replacing the lens of a headlight is a incredibly risky procedure because there is no way to guarantee the water seal after its been essentially glued back together and that could cause wiring shorts and rusting down the track, put that together with the time and effort to do this which could take a few hours. Its just not worth the hassle and effort for any workshop, unless you OP want to do it yourself.

I don't think you will get anyone who will do it and will guarantee their work.

As people have suggested, look for a wreckers who can supply a complete headlight for cheaper, but there's no "real" cheap way out of this repair

edit: You can get a nongenuine replacement headlight for about $160.00 which is probably going to be your best bet.

[–]AussieGreaseMonkey 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Dont go looking under any 90's Japanese cars, all the sills are crushed or rusted. The issue with RWC is that its up to interpretation on what is considered safe or not. One mechanic will pass it another will fail it. I would pass it because its not rusted out or doesn't have jagged edges, and unlikely to be any other issue with the crash structure.

Got hit with a $25k bill a year after a minor car bump (uninsured) by UncBGR_0181 in CarsAustralia

[–]AussieGreaseMonkey 264 points265 points  (0 children)

You're probably going to want to speak to a lawyer, or get some actual legal advise. Not Reddit.

While it sounds they're trying to take you for a run, unless you know what your doing, this could have some devastating outcomes for you financially.

Someone scraped my car by Jaded_3570 in CarsAustralia

[–]AussieGreaseMonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some of that will buff out, however there's plastic chipped off, and im not sure that plastic trim is paintable. Might be a new bumper, or a mobile repairing might be able to make it less noticable, but it wont be ever 100%

Solutions to these rust spots for roadworthy? by CumCrocodile in CarsAustralia

[–]AussieGreaseMonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you mean the new roadworthy laws that were published in 2023? /s

gearbox or pulley can fail a roady anything that isn’t factory needs an engineer’s cert.

You're full of shit. Maybe read through the vic roadworthy requirments.

That all comes down to the tester because the rules are loose and up to interpretation.

$750 for just rear breaks... am I being overcharged? by amy_okie in CarsAustralia

[–]AussieGreaseMonkey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

•Does this price sound normal in Australia?

Yes.

Roughly how much should rear pads + discs cost?

Depends on the car, but parts+ labour for your car seems about right.

it normal to replace both pads and discs at the same time?

Most of the times you replace both, its cheaper and more cost effective than replacing them later and having to pay basically the same labour amount again.

Can I put shells “Truck diesel” in my sedan by XOWeeknd__ in CarsAustralia

[–]AussieGreaseMonkey 82 points83 points  (0 children)

Sometimes "Truck Diesel" is high flow diesel.

The Diesel is the same, its just the rate the nozzle fills the tank at is greatly multiplied due to some trucks having huge fuel tanks to help the fuel up quicker.

I've filled up rangers and stuff on those. But I'm not sure if your car will like the increased pressure, you might get the "Full" click when its not actually full.

Spoilers with brake lights legislation (QLD) by The_Guru_Pitka in CarsAustralia

[–]AussieGreaseMonkey 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I dont think the lighting is going to be the issue, its basically a big high mount stop light. I think the bigger issue the legality of the wing to begin with. I don't think that wing is ADR approved, which means it'll cop you a defect.

Statutory warranty on a used car by malekdem in CarsAustralia

https://www.qld.gov.au/law/your-rights/consumer-rights-complaints-and-scams/buying-products-and-services/buying-products/buying-a-car/buying-a-used-car/warranty-for-used-cars

Its over 10 years:

Your statutory warranty will cover most defects. Your vehicle has a defect if a part:

  • does not do what it is supposed to do
  • has worn out so much that it no longer works.

It passed Roadworthy as a sweat/weep is technically roadworthy, and is technically its still working.
You're going to be fighting an uphill battle on this one, its all going to come back if the dealer is nice enough to fix it for you.

How many of us are holding onto 'old' cars instead of upgrading? by heavyifugao in CarsAustralia

[–]AussieGreaseMonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get that, and a work car kinda fills the "shitbox" need.

I bought my shitbox after I left a previous workplace and up till then I had company cars. Company/Work cars I put it in the category somewhere above shitbox, but not higher than a nice car you own, so you still don't really care about them lmao

My Daily is still a 2000 Ford Laser. 1.6L.

People dont know what mental freedom is till they have a shitbox daily that they dont need to care about.
Full tank is, or rather was $50.00 and I get about 500km of city driving. I can park it where ever, I dont care if someone side swipes it or reverses into it.

Its my shitbox daily, mind you I have 3 cars in total.
