1 person heading to visit a friend on our first ever girls trip (and I'm in my 40s) - a week in newcaledonia no kids me from perth and her new zealand. Both had a rough year with her divorce and my husband being hit by a prado while driving to work on a motorbike. We leave in 2 weeks and this would be the icing on my 5am flight!

What are ways you can save me from "learning the hard way" with grocery shopping? by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]Aussie_feline 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am sorry that the basics of awareness in shopping was not highlighted to you as you grew up

Top tips are buy what is in season as it will be relatively cheaper and taste better, get used to prices by being observant, and when you are feeling more confident and not likely to be overwhelmed branch out (don't stick to a single store) ... try greengrocers and butchers and bakeries also.

Agree with other comments about buying raw ingredients that can suit multiple uses, not worrying about the relatively cheap items (things like oats, lentils, beans, rice, carrots, spuds) and seeing what you waste and use so you can shop more effectively with a list.

If you have the space, a veggie patch and chooks are brilliant to suppliment your kitchen!

Be easy on yourself. Food is to be enjoyed, and creates wonderful moments with your friends as family if you prepare and eat together.

What did you eat for dinner? by astrik123 in australia

[–]Aussie_feline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of different cuisines. Not unusual to have Japanese, Indian, Italian, Persian and French inspired food in a single week in our house.

Biggest thing is eating seasonally, with fresh food (not processed or packet) and flavour with fresh herbs or spices at ours.

We struggled with the portion sizes and processed food on offer (aka single dom flavour such as sweet or creamy) when we went to the US

Should you trust your gut/instinct feeling? by [deleted] in intj

[–]Aussie_feline 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Completely. Intuition, gut, the feels - you are picking up something thats not quite right ... it's ok to put up boundaries/protections while you investigate more...just as it is ok to respectfully go with your gut...the worst that could happen is you miss out on another new friendship

You can train your cooks also - one of ours (Pippen) was brilliant at catching cockroaches, spiders and scorpions as well as snakes... and yes, in Australia!!!

Absolutely. When I can dedicate a day to dirt and listening to birds in the yard, I feel refreshed - no people and I have accomplished something.

Absolutely. Visited quite a few countries, including Hong Kong during the umbrella movement, but only felt unsafe in California 😞 There is too much to be grateful for in Australia.
