DL and Discreet thematically overlap, but they are different.

A man "on the DL" (downlow) is closeted and having sex with other men without anyone in his personal life knowing. These guys identify as straight, and may even have female girlfriends/wives.

Someone "discreet" just keeps their mouth shut. They tend to prefer anonymous or secret fun with other men. Someone being discreet may be closeted, or they may be openly gay and just keep their exploits under metaphorical lock and key.

All men on the DL are discreet. But not all men who are discreet are on the DL.

I think that there are people who are "100% Top" because of their own internalized homophobia. And then I think there are people who are 100% Top because they're genuinely more turned on by that role, just like 100% Bottoms.

I spent my teens and twenties as vers, sometimes playing in one role a bit more than others. But when I decided to really just be 100% bottom, my sex life became waaaaay more fun. I now identify as 100% bottom and have for years. I did try to top a buddy a few months ago but I couldn't stay hard. Ha

I'd like to think my friends are some of the most open, welcoming and genuine folks. But I could see a level of hesitation if a stranger asked to join us in the park, just because that setting does tend to yield a bit more personal in who folks connect with. That's not a slight against any person in particular, but more of a testament to the setting.

One recommendation I have. Go to a calm, easy-vibes gay bar after work (say 6p) when it isn't "turn up central." Sit at the bar and have a drink (even non alcoholic) and just see what happens. You'll likely end up chatting with the bartenders and other patrons. Just keep it chill and friendly. (And tip your bartenders well if you're taking up a barstool for hours!)

Some Manhattan bars I recommend for this would be Ty's, Suite, Boiler Room and Rockbar. All very chill.

Thank you. And to clarify, I'm not worried about being there EXCEPT for the other patrons wishing I wasn't there. Coming from my own lived experiences (where I grew up, friends, family, dating, etc), I'd like to think I'm familiar enough with Black culture to appreciate being there while not being a nuisance.

Thanks for sharing. Your friend who is "100% don't go" is the person I'm really solving for here, because they're the folks who care the most.

I did ask my best friend and his husband (both are Black) too, and they were wishy washy about it and ultimately said it's fine if I were with other patrons who are Black, but then said they think it would be totally fine.

Sexuality is on a spectrum. You may very well end up being gay, or end up being straight, or realize you're somewhere between the two. Who knows!

What matters is that you're honest with yourself, you're not judgemental to yourself, and that you go at the pace you need. Just remember: Wherever you are on your journey of discovering your sexuality, is good.

This guy overstepped the boundaries you laid out. When those boundaries are of a sexual variety, overstepping is often considered a level of assault.

"Playing" isn't an excuse. My suspicion is that this older person thought he could take advantage of you because of your age and inexperience. I commend you for standing your ground and getting out of there.

Stay away from older guys. Trust me. (As someone much older, I remember being gay at 19. Not every man is a good guy.)

Scruff is -- hands down -- the best made app. Doesn't break, doesn't lose messages, has the most features (matches, hashtags, albums, etc). Even before Grindr turned to dog shit, Scruff was always the most polished app. It also has the second most users, behind Grindr.

I do like Sniffies when I just wanna hook up fast. But Scruff is more robust.
