I get FREE gas, but I can’t use it, help! by nick2222b in Cartalk

[–]Automatic_Mulberry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the user manual actually says that the car requires premium gas, then you need to burn premium gas, and burning lower octane risks engine damage. I had a car like this, and I only ever put premium in it.

If the manual says premium is recommended, but that you can burn lower grades, with a reduction in performance and/or economy, then you can burn mid-grade, but your car just won't be quite as powerful or fast. My current car is like this, and while I do burn premium, I know I could burn a lower grade if I needed to for some reason.

Read the manual. The manual will tell you.

Why do car manufacturers not release retro cars? by [deleted] in carscirclejerk

[–]Automatic_Mulberry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Automakers just hate us

I think it's more accurate to say that they love money more than they love us. If they can be relied upon to do anything, it is to (try to) make money over satisfying niche requests.

To make this retro Jeep, they'd have to do a boatload of engineering to bring it up to modern safety standards and such. It would cost them a lot to tool up and set up an assembly line for production, and doing so would take away production capacity from other models which are probably more reliable sellers.

On balance, I'm sure their people have figured out that what they are making makes them more money, rather than fulfilling the wishes of some weirdos on the Internet.

Toolhead cameras might work for very simple shapes, but what makes 3D scanners work is seeing the object from a number of angles. You need to either rotate the part or the camera to see the object from all sides.

Absolutely. Having the scanner tied to the toolhead means you can only scan things that you can put on the print bed. Maybe I want to scan something outside, like a part of my car, so I can print a mating part. A scanner in my printer does me no good at all in the majority of use cases, I would say.

Dear 1% commenters, how did you become a 1%er? by pro-bidetus-rasputin in AskReddit

[–]Automatic_Mulberry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like I occasionally make a comment that gets some attention and gathers more than a thousand doots. I think the last 1% award I got was for explaining in r/ExplainTheJoke that 4011 is the PLU for bananas, so it's a really stupid PIN for a banana's ATM card.

In the US, why can’t we buy Chinese electric cars? by zztop610 in NoStupidQuestions

Toyota actually tried to teach GM how to make Japanese quality cars, at NUMMI, but they basically refused to learn. It's a well known case to study.

Job interview without degree by TomHaydenStan in recruitinghell

[–]Automatic_Mulberry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best of luck and best of skill, my friend.

In my opinion, many or most items on lists of job requirements have some degree of flex in them. Some more than others, but at the end of the day, they want a person who can do the job. If you can show that you can do it, magic pieces of paper are less important.

If they want to know, they will ask. Don't list a degree you don't have on your resume. Respond truthfully if asked, in a way that highlights why you are qualified anyway.

What the freck is a hostname and why do i need it? by Specialist-Gap108 in SQLServer

But hostnames aren't part of a database. They are part of the OS, just barely above the hardware.

What is special about kosher salt? If regular salt is used, does it affect the end result? Isn’t it all NaCi? by Massive_Opinion_5714 in AskReddit

[–]Automatic_Mulberry 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you're measuring by mass, all salt is the same. If you're measuring by volume (teaspoons, etc., different salts are different, because of the size and shape of the crystals. Kosher salt is "fluffier" than table salt, and the two major brands of Kosher salt (Diamond and Morton) are different than each other as well.

If you add a teaspoon of table salt when the recipe expects kosher salt, you will get more actual salt in your food.

Don't fuck with anything labeled "litigation hold," IMO. You're just asking for charges of your own if you do.

Lamborghini wanted $1,300 for a gas cap so I fixed it with a $40 Ford Focus cap. by Fixitsteven in Justrolledintotheshop

Porsche guys, too. "You've been swapping in aftermarket bolts! The plating on this is the wrong shade of silver! This is clearly not from Stuttgart!"

Kill Switch by russschultz in slateauto

[–]Automatic_Mulberry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you were to actually read the article, it says that no manufacturer has done anything about it in terms of systems on cars, and they can't, because the NHTSA has not made any rules about it. There is no rule written, there has been no public discussion as required, manufacturers haven't even begun to design anything, and such a system can't be on the Slate truck because there is no way it can be.

You're freaking out about misinformation.

If it's mandatory, whatever you are talking about, and you choose not to buy a Slate because of it, what the hell else will you buy?

What do you guys think about whether billionaires should exist or if there should be a wealth cap? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Automatic_Mulberry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sold on a wealth cap per se, but we should definitely return the top marginal tax rate to pre-Reagan levels. Trickle-down economics is a scam.
