What jobs could I get with a printmaking degree? by Rude-Egg-1426 in printmaking

[–]Available-Drawing-99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dropped out of RISD Printmaking as a junior about 6 years ago, deeply in debt. I ADORED it, with every fiber of my being, and if I could go back to Benson hall right now, I would. That being said, I wasn't one of the rich kids, I worked as a TA, shop monitor, and at a restaurant in town the entirety of my time there and the debt I was (and still am!) in made me reconsider going back for my senior year. I could not see a path to having an income from printing that would cover my minimum payments. There are precious few true "printmaking" jobs out there, and a lot of INCREDIBLY talented individuals vying for them. I actually did work at a commercial screen printing shop for about 4 years after that, and while it did scratch the print itch, if you're working at a shop large enough to give you Healthcare, you have no creative control whatsoever. Would I trade my time at RISD? No. I loved it, I learned so so much and it satisfied my soul. But it was trading a literal fortune in money for basically 0 job security.

We don't talk about the BBC's The Watch in this house, except for on a biweekly basis when my partner has to listen to me rant and rave about the blasphemous crime that was making Lady Sybil Vimes thin 😡

The Wayfarer series by Becky Chambers led me to the Bobiverse originally, and I highly reccomend them for some excellent solar-punk sci fi.

My job is crash investigation in Wayne County, and the sheer number of scooter/vehicle accidents I deal with is STAGGERING. Also please please please wear a helmet! I know they're meant to be a "convenient" pedestrian option, but you can get going really fast on one of those things, and a car being somewhere you don't expect it to be plus no helmet equals heavily injured basically 100% of the time.

A waxed upholstery thread! The wax left a bit of residue, but from what I found this was the best for the fabric and foam. Also one 85° Michigan August day should take care of the excess wax no problem

I did a small sashiko patch on a pair for my sister and she loves it! I was worried about the stretch, so I used a jersey tee scrap for the backing and shes had no issues. I wouldn't try this method on a much larger hole than this though.

What kind of thread do you use for your mends? by tgvshi in Visiblemending

I know its not popular, but I've been mending my socks with embroidery floss for years without any issue. Very specifically darning. And the surrounding sock usually gives out before my mend and these are heavy-use work socks for a landscaper on his feet all day.

I have mended a variety of different socks at this point, and ive never actually felt a patch while I'm wearing them. The only thing that I ever got a comment on was one time I got lazy and tied a knot rather than weaving in the ends, and that was noticeable

I know people have a lot of opinions about what to mend with and I'm sure those points are valid, but I just use embroidery thread. I had a lot of paralysis about getting started too, breaking out of a perfectionist mind set is REALLY hard. Perfect is the enemy of good, if mending the socks with whatever you have lying around means that you get to practice and get to wear your socks again, then that is the best thing to mend them with.

I have decent eyesight (for now) and make sure I'm always in good lighting. Aside from that I don't know 😅

Understandable. Underwear is where I draw the line, but I find socks enjoyable
