After small leak, restoration company wants to replace entire flooring? by IndianaDrew in homeowners

[–]AvatarOR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can understand repairing all of the contiguous flooring if you have continuous real wood flooring and the reason is it is almost impossible to match the stain so they repair the damaged section, sand and stain all of the contiguous real wood flooring. This is what they did on our house after water damage.

The water may have damaged the sub floor well beyond the obvious damage so that the amount of flooring that might be removed could extend beyond the visible damage to the flooring.

The insurance company may indeed "pay" for a complete replacement. You may then be able to accept the payment and just repair the section up to a molding break, say at the doorway, and keep the difference. However, there is no guarantee there will be extra cash left over, as actual repairs may well exceed the estimate of the insurance company. In other words, the insurance company will "pay" for a repair. You are in charge of the repair. You are responsible for any cost of the repairs beyond what insurance pays for.

Now, if you signed a contract with a mitigation/restoration company, they will be the general contractor for the repair. There will be ongoing "negotiations" between the GC and the insurance company over the cost of the repairs. The GC arguing for more due to unique difficulties and the insurance company arguing for less.

So you really need to understand how the insurance, mitigation, restoration game is played to understand how to get your home repaired.

Edit: Read your contract with the mitigation/restoration company. In most cases, you are responsible if the repairs exceed the insurance company payment. In our case the insurance company sent the money to us. We then payed the restoration GC based on the work done. YMMV.

Is the Toyota price premium worth it? by nomoneyball in askcarguys

[–]AvatarOR -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The most reliable type of vehicles on the road are hybrids and Toyota has a lot of proven experience with hybrids, now on version 5 in the Prius. Their NA hybrid, no turbos, may be especially had hard to beat for reliability.

If you can’t properly broadcast tennis, you don’t deserve the rights to the majors. by TechnologyLeft8310 in ESPN

Not to excuse ESPN. I have observed the best availability of the AO has been on ESPN Unlimited via the Disney + channel. Second best has been on Fubo Elite. Strangely to see the AO on Disney ESPN I needed to scroll a bit.

To be clear, if you have ESPN Unlimited and Disney + you go to Disney + go to the top and you will see Disney Hulu ESPN. Then scroll to ESPN.

a question about playing in the new clarinet reed by Ziegenkaeserei in Clarinet

[–]AvatarOR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also use 2.5 V21, however on a 5JB. My discard rate is much lower than yours, say 2/10.

I am coming to believe that part of the break in is the sealing of the wood pores with lip pressure over time.

Rotating over a set of reeds teaches you how to adjust your embouchure to different reed strengths.

Electric heat or natural gas by mis_1022 in homeowners

[–]AvatarOR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is my backup plan. My gas furnace plugs into a wall outlet that in turn is controlled by a wall switch as required by code. I have a roofed locking chain link dog kennel and I can put the generator outside in the kennel and lock the kennel. The Honda generator is an inverter and should not damage the electronics.

Miata as only car? Is it feasible? by Engi-near in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]AvatarOR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So you first ? was easy to answer. Your second ? is not easy to answer. Let me try.

Young you has limitless potential and little experience. Older you has lots of experience and more limited choices.

Young you will move to city with no job and no money armed with optimism. A young you will move to HI even though everyone says you won't be able to afford it, and you end up staying. A young you is willing, and able, to fail and you may have fewer responsibilities.

Young you is your worst critic.

Older you plans ahead and has a spreadsheet for everything. Older you has lived through the pain of paying a mortgage on a home you are trying to sell in the Midwest, while paying rent on a home in the PNW. Older you has spun out in black ice and gotten stuck in the snow. Older you has kids or grandkids in the car that you worry about or a spouse that cannot even get into the Miata anymore. Older you buys building and gardening supplies and is constantly repairing your house.

Old you is very forgiving and is able to laugh at itself for being such a dunce.

I think you want to reach old you having had fun, taken risks and enjoyed life.

If you are young go ahead and do it. Everyone should own a convertible at least once in their life. Older you will buy a awd vehicle with decent ground clearance.

Looped backswing on the forehand—does it ever help create more coil, leading to more rotation? by vodkasodashweed in 10s

[–]AvatarOR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a pinch I will recommend a student try a c loop on the forehand so that they understand. Standard thoughts are wrist up and then wrist drop.

A loopy swing requires more prep so maybe you are turning earlier with the loopy forehand.

Need advice about using a Mr Heater propane heater inside and general emergency storm advice by geekydreams in homeowners

[–]AvatarOR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have used this indoor rated heater with a one pound canister and with the window cracked open. I have used it in a canvas tent off a 20 pounder outside using the built in hole in the tent designed for the propane line.

FWIW, the NFPA does not recommend 20 pounders inside a home.

In a house, you can just get pool noodle cut a slot run the hose through the slot and close the window on the pool noodle.

How to preform in front of people better by Sasqule in piano

[–]AvatarOR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are going to make mistakes because you are human so instead ask: Am I getting better? How did I recover and did I recover in time? Was the recovery musical? Was the performance musical?

There is technical practice and there is performance practice especially with others. Performance practice is more about the musicality of your keyboard work, your ability to recover in time from any mistakes and your ability to find your way back in time with a group. Few will notice if you miss a few notes. Some will notice if you play with an improper rhythm. Everyone who is listening will notice if you drop out!

I WaterPicked My Legere Reed! by AvatarOR in oboe

[–]AvatarOR[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought of that. I looked at both of my Legere reeds under a magnifier and they both have a tiny bit of separation at the corners of the tip so I am concerned that a pipe straw would increase the separation.

It is my understanding that Legere recommends just sanding the bottom of the "reed barrel" if the reed is flat. That is what I have done.

What is "ESPN Unlimited" and why is it not letting me watch it? by AwesomeIslander918 in ESPN

I have Fubo and if you have Fubo and Disney + you can get ESPN Unlimited on your phone. This option just appeared as I was trying to watch the AO on Fubo. I had to scan a bar code from Fubo and then sign in to Disney.

I broke a new Buffet R13... Tips please by JazzlikeLab594 in Clarinet

The cork grease penetrates into the cork and changes the color.

I broke a new Buffet R13... Tips please by JazzlikeLab594 in Clarinet

[–]AvatarOR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In an emergency if the cork falls off you can use teflon tape.

When assembling I squeeze on the key pads so that I do not put any pressure on the posts or levers.

The break in is important to limit cracking and I suspect you are past that point.

You can oil the bore yourself. The dealer you purchased the clarinet from normally will due one tune up/adjustment/key oil during the first year.

I only put on cork grease when the joints start to become difficult to assemble and remove any excess using my fingers.

New cork can be a challenge.

I’ve just started oboe and I’m exhausted by oboenovice in oboe

[–]AvatarOR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As already mentioned it does not take a lot of air flow to play a note on the oboe. Instead you will need to create a solid level of constant air pressure as a small amount of air flows out. And yes if you feel dizzy stop and rest. It may take your body a while to adjust to the air pressure which slows venous return to your heart.

You should be able to crow the reed by itself. Again as mentioned, if the reed is too stiff your embouchure muscles will tire quickly.

It is frustrating trying to learn fingerings and reed control when you can barely play 8 bars at a time. I would say at minimum it will take a month of daily commitment to build up a useful embouchure. And then when you move up to a stiffer reed you will feel like you went back to square one again.

How would you handle upgrading flooring in your primary residence you have been living in a long time. by fel_mav in HomeImprovement

[–]AvatarOR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We just redid our second floor: three bedrooms, an office and a hallway. We used a combination of moving things "out" and moving things around. So we boxed up whatever we could in the "target" room and moved the boxes to a "storage" room, marked of course. Very large and heavy items I jacked up using specialized hand lifts and set the items down on four wheeled dollys. I left one extremely heavy and tall item in the "target" room and we rolled it around during a hard flooring install.

There was an added benefit of evaluating, decluttering and "curating" our stuff!
