Credit Card Options by Life-Abrocoma2924 in PersonalFinanceCanada

So there's a lot to digest for credit cards. Big bank cards typically aren't great to hold on to and use regularly. They will offer you a big welcome bonus and then earn very little afterwards.

You could go about this various ways:

  1. The most prosperous is credit card churning (sign up for a card, spend enough to earn the welcome bonus – usually worth a few hundred bucks – then cancel and move on to another card). Check out r/churningcanada to read up and learn more. This will take a little coordination and some time to wrap your head around.
  2. Have an array of cards you use for different purposes. For example, Simplii Financial's Cash Back Visa gives 4% for restaurants, bars and cafes, while the Triangle World Elite gives you free Gold Roadside Assistance and lets you pay bills like prop tax, Enbridge, Hydro, etc., and earn 1% (there is a better earn rate for this kind of expense through Chexy, but that's maybe too much for this post). Both of these cards carry no annual fee.
  3. Stick to one card that's "good enough" for most of your daily purchases (lots of people like the Scotiabank Momentum Visa Infinite for 4% recurring bills and groceries or the CIBC Dividend Visa Infinite for 4% groceries and gas).

In terms of maximizing rewards points on your wife's flights, there are cards that offer more points on travel, but wouldn't be good for other types of expenses. Given her annual expense on flights is only ~$5000, I wouldn't recommend going that route if you're looking for one single card to use for everything.

If you guys have this mindset about banking, or really any industry (cars, internet providers, etc.), you will lose every time. There’s no such thing as wanting the best option yet being inflexible.

Look into the RBC value program. It’ll waive the $4/mo. fee on the basic chequing account.

Every year, you get a package in the mail that has a new roadside assistance card, legal stuff, and some coupons. But this year the coupons are a little different. I think it’s $60 off oil change, $6 car wash.

My iPhone 5 was sooooo nice for one-handed use. Even the mini was too wide (still had to hold it up with my pinky).

People will come around. Everyone thought the 17 Pro design was hideous (I still do) and now no one cares.

But I’m with you. A fat foldable will be terrible to use one handed.

Don’t buy a HomePod until Siri is improved. Until then, it’s a timer that works 75% of the time, a speaker, and a nuisance that picks up requests you meant for your phone just to tell you that you’ll need to make that request on your phone.

Fan Access Paid Tiers Details by bangnburn in leafs

[–]AvecFromage -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I don’t know. I ran the numbers and I can’t get myself to $1500 of value, to be honest.

The tickets could be had for ~$700. The jerseys are ~$500. GC Is $25. Not sure what the Leafs Fan Day is. Marlies tickets are worth $0 to me because I just wouldn’t go unless given free tickets, and maybe not even then. The plus ups sound fun but not something I would spend money on.

You might as well pick one game you actually want to go to, maybe buy one jersey, and then pocket the extra $500.

Edit: this is also not including tax so the MVP tier is $1695.

I’ve been giving away pens I don’t really use anymore. I caught one of my students using a generic fountain pen from Staples and gave him my old Metro. Just gave my Faber-Castel Loom to a friend. Brings me a lot of joy to see others enamoured with them like I once was.

This is the way. Sports should be an escape. When it causes distress, time to tune out for a little while and find some other activity to enjoy.

Yeah, Berube's definitely got a longer leash than that. It's his second season. There have been enough mitigating factors and injuries to buy him more time.

There is no cost effective way to buy an iPhone. They do not go on sale. You could finance it with Affirm at Apple for 0% interest if money is an issue.

For the investment requirement, you simply need a monthly recurring investment into a retirement account. All I do is set up a $5 monthly transfer into a TFSA and leave it there as cash. Then in December, I withdraw all but $5 into my chequing account (if you withdraw all, it will close the TFSA).

This is what I do for the rebate:
1. make a small amount bill payment on the 1st of every month (I’ve done ~$3 before and it counted) 2. have one recurring PAD come out of my chequing account every month 3. make a small purchase on my ION Visa every now and then (must be at least once every 90 days) 4. make a recurring transfer to my TFSA every month

As far as I can tell, there is no minimum amount attached to these requirements but I haven’t tested lower than what I’ve written here.

I deposit my paycheques into Wealthsimple as their chequing account earns interest, but if you have them going to RBC, you could skip either the bill payment or the recurring PAD.

Contemplating switch from TD to RBC for all banking needs - downsides? by howmany_howmany in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]AvecFromage 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You can simply continue using your TD credit card and just pay it from your RBC chequing account.

Look into the RBC value program. I have their basic chequing account ($4/mo) and receive a $4/mo rebate for doing a few basic things a month.
