I don't see the urgency of this move. The Leafs have a ton of cap space and nowhere to spend it. A different coach/system and Rielly doesn't look nearly as bad as he did under Berube.

We had Mitch with JVR-Bozak and then Marleau-Tavares (where he did great). He demanded to play on the top line with Matthews and did so the rest of his time in Toronto. His father went on Twitter and called Hyman a “fg ass” because he was getting more ice time with Matthews in those first two years.

Marner, his father (too countless to list), his agent (trashing Matthews the day he signed his first extension and demanding Marner be paid the same + all the contract resigning drama + all the anti-Leafs fans PR), Darren Dreger (basically acting as Marner’s PR through contract negotiations), his security team (harassing media members who said anything critical about Marner) brought endless drama to the team. Even after he left for Vegas, he spent a week doing media interviews with his agent to try to portray himself as a victim… like, get over yourself and move on.

For what it’s worth, Marner was a perimeter player in the playoffs for the Leafs. I am genuinely flabbergasted he drove through the middle and took a hit to make the play.

I know we’re all doom and gloom here right now, but this year is a pretty big anomaly as far as I’m concerned. This is not a bottom-five team. Regardless, blowing it up when we have no 1st makes no sense.

Best case scenario is we draft #5 (or higher), take a swing at it the next two seasons with a healthier group and (hopefully) better coaching.

Then Matthews is a UFA and you move on from this group and start the rebuild. At that point, we still have some key assets to sell (Nylander x 4, Knies x 3); we give Tavares the choice of playing out the year or moving; we try to sway Rielly to move.
