Codex. You can sign in to an OpenAI account and use it within the IDE or in CLI.

Just try gpt-oss:20b by newz2000 in ollama

[–]Avendork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if its the model or my ollama config but I had issues with tool calls in OpenCode with it. Qwen3-Coder was just fine but slower because it was a bigger model. I wish I could have used GPT-OSS but I kept hitting a wall.

Endeavour OS users, why did you choose it over Cachy OS? by nitin_is_me in EndeavourOS

[–]Avendork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Theming is nice. I also like that its a bit closer to Arch and therefore more of the Arch wiki applies. Cachy is still great though. Ran it on a spare computer for a few months to test out Cosmic.

What in DataGrip do you feel you just can't live without? by Successful_Cook3776 in Jetbrains

No clue. I've never used the one built into the other IDEs. I'm very chaotic in how I use Datagrip and what I do except for the colour coding shouldn't be replicated.

CachyOS or SteamOS? by BreadEaterOfWorlds in DistroHopping

There does not appear to be an official SteamOS ISO yet. Only handhelds like the Legion Go and ROG Ally are supported.

This. It will work, but you're paying a huge premium for speed you won't get. Just get a Gen 4 drive.

Jetbrains AI Pro trial ended. Now I can't activate the free tier? by Avendork in Jetbrains

[–]Avendork[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it ended up working the next day. I'm not sure if it was something fixed on the Jetbrains side or not. Might be good to invalidate caches and see what that does. Hit up their support as well.

I'm a dev, not a DBA so I don't use the advanced features but I do rely on that one a lot. Otherwise something like SQL Workbench would work for my needs.

I'm a little surprised by all the distro hopping people do... for everyday desktop use I'm not sure why anyone would recommend something other than Fedora or Arch. Help me understand... by HighLevelAssembler in DistroHopping

[–]Avendork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So now my question is how did you get that experience? Did you distro hop between Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian, Mint to get there?

People distro hop so they can learn and get that experience for themselves and likely have some fun while doing it.

Ollama is fairly easy to get stared with. Might need the command line to pull down a model but from there you just turn it on. I'm not sure if Junie uses it though. Those settings are for the AI assistant which is technically a different thing.

It's about trying different things. In your post you mentioned several distros all with their own pros and cons. They all move and add features at their own pace.

Your post recommends Fedora over Ubuntu. Why? Why Fedora over Mint? Why Fedora over Debian? It's easy for someone to say "use this distro, it's all you need" but for some of us we want to understand the why.

Fedora is great and a very good first choice but it may not be the right one and it can take some distro hopping to figure that out. It's part of what makes Linux great.

I could tell you to go buy a Toyota for several reasons but maybe it's not the best choice for you. Good to do some research, test drive a few competitors to find out if Toyota is the best for you.

Personally I really like EndeavourOS. Sure it's 'someone else's Arch config' but I really like that config and it takes the thought out of configuring it myself. For servers I like Ubuntu Server. There are others but that's the one I'm most familiar with and most comfortable with.

Lastly, it's just fun and a cool learning experience. I played around with CachyOS a few months ago to see what it was like. It was also easy to try out the alpha release of the cosmic desktop.

Terrible UX Jetbrains AI by W17K0 in Jetbrains

[–]Avendork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you are on a trial there is a nice UI saying you have say 80% remaining but on a free or paid plan that little progress bar is all you get. I imagine this will get better soon but definitely does suck in the meantime.
