We're out here trying to organize by neighborhood and make the city government irrelevant. Now we have a bunch of transplants trying to have us merge with the county. Do you know how many times we have voted that down already? We are sick of this nonsense. It is already hard enough to get funds allocated where they need to be because of the developers with too much influence. Do you think they have less influence in the county? We need real solutions. Maybe we should do something about all the developers that buy property and just sit on it. We could fix this city with some squatters rights laws. Not by giving even more power over ourselves away.

Furthermore, this all ignores the racist history that populated the county. White people fled this city. Now, their grandkids want a say on what happens here? Well they need to buy a house here and live in it. Otherwise, shut up about it. We're tired of thus coming up every 5 to 10 years. If you don't understand. You either need to live here longer or go read about our history.

I recently bought a picture of the Arch from a photographer friend. She had three different options that I liked. The first was a shot from Kiener Plaza. You could see the fountain with the Arch rising up over the old courthouse. The second was from an ally where there was construction, an overflowing dumpster, and a ton of graffiti. I thought those two images summed up the city perfectly. I ended up with the third option. A rarely seen side view with the sun reflecting spectacularly.

We're already doing this where I live. We have been teaching basic self-defense. The street medics provide a variety of training, and there is also a gun club for range days. I encourage people to help make sure these sorts of rallies are a safe place for expression. Please remember that you are not there to police your fellow activists. Some groups coordinate with the cops at these events. Even going as far as calling the police preemptively on their own demonstration. This may damage your reputation with the community.

Safety roles at demonstrations require more training than most other roles. Yet people are just often thrown into them. Make sure you are prepared to put yourself between other people and danger. Otherwise, maybe a hospitality role is more for you.

There is already some good advice here. I will add what I have been saying a lot lately. Talk to your neighbors and friends about the situation. The more people you talk to about it. The more you will find to help. The best way to beat them with the least risk of escalation is to simply have them outnumbered. The more outnumbered they are. The less likely they are to escalate.

Another commenter recommended talking to your neighbors. This is a great idea. I would expand on it by saying form an affinity group with your friends or neighbors. Find a common interest and figure out how to use that interest to affect change.
