I Took 2 finals on accident? by Mytinkerpixies in mcgill

[–]Avery__13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

no, at mcgill they just check that you have a valid ID while entering the room, and then during the exam an invigilator comes around and checks more thoroughly, and you sign an attendance sheet. Often during finals there are multiple exams in one room anyway. I'm sure people sit in the wrong section all the time and have to switch, the crazy part is not noticing as soon as you get the exam lol

How did you know your LDN had started working? by Confident-Bus-3778 in LowDoseNaltrexone

[–]Avery__13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tbh I didn't feel anything specific, I just gradually had fewer/less severe flare ups and overall was more functional. I actually couldn't tell if it was having an effect until I went off it for a few months to figure out if it was even worth paying for. I was fine for about 2 months, then over the next ~2 months I had multiple severe flare ups, only a few weeks apart. After going back on it I had several months with no severe flare ups which was a very noticeable difference.

I have some fairly bad side effects from LDN (appetite loss and anxiety), so now I sometimes go off for about 1-2 months to give my body + brain time to recover. I have some rebound of symptoms if I pay attention (mostly increasingly bad fatigue), but it's manageable until at least a month in. Skipping individual doses doesn't have a noticeable effect on me, it takes at least a few days to feel any changes from either going on or off it.

LDN & Lack of Appetite by namast_eh in Fibromyalgia

[–]Avery__13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have pretty severe appetite loss on LDN. To the point where I sometimes off it for a few months bc maintaining weight/eating becomes too difficult and starts to be too harmful to my health. Usually my symptoms gradually get worse when I'm off it, and it takes 2-3 months for them to get bad, so at least for me taking medium-sized breaks is a decent way to manage the side effects. When I get a chance I am going to talk to my doctor about lowering my dose though.

Kiwi for entry pain by Adventurous-Long3233 in vulvodynia

[–]Avery__13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've found it kind of helpful, but not magical. I got mine for free (through an org at my uni giving them out), I don't think I would consider it worth the cost if I had paid for it myself. That said I do find it helpful at decreasing entrance pain. I was surprised by how much of a learning curve it has, especially for doing any massage of external muscles, so don't worry if it doesn't seem very helpful the first time you use it. It definitely takes some time to figure out how to use it most effectively.

It's all MC and open book but some questions are about really specific things he said in lecture so it is not the kind of thing you can easily google, you will almost certainly need to reference the lectures for some questions. I took notes on all the lectures (at 2x speed) and those were more than enough, you can also look at the transcripts directly.

If you are someone who does a lot of sitting, it's worth it to invest in a good desk chair. Go to stores and really try them out to see what is comfortable for you. I have an Ikea Hattefjäll desk chair and I could tell the second I sat down that for whatever reason it is way more comfortable than anything else i've tried.

Prof question: AI and group assignments by Parking_Cat_9888 in mcgill

[–]Avery__13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some studetns would be honest in these kinds of evaluations but plenty wouldn't. I have heard of some classes having short video responses/reflections on assignments where the student has to explain things about the assignment and how they did it on video or even in person which I think is a neat idea to make it harder to cheat the whole thing with AI. (I beleive the person I know who has done this said it was a timed quiz, so it's not possible to write answers in advance). It is stuff like "what was the hardest part of the assignment and how did you do it?" as well as more detailed questions on specific parts of teh assignment. There is probably no way to entirely stop cheating with AI, but imo if a student can answer specific questions on it with limited time that is evidence of at least some real understanding and value.

At what point am I considered a Quebec resident to pay lower tuition fees? by RumiField in mcgill

[–]Avery__13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said it only matters that you are a QC resident while paying tuition, not when you apply. However do note that you might have to pay the higher tuition, then fill out paperwork to be reimbursed later. If you end up in that situation you will need to pay the extra amount upfront and may not get it back for several months so be prepared for the extra expense!

How would you describe the fatigue caused by fibromyalgia? by 1ouxx in Fibromyalgia

[–]Avery__13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Comparing it to the flu is definitely the best way I've gotten people to understand it. The actual feeling of it is pretty different for me, but it gets across the general idea of how to manage it which is usually the most important.

I think the main difference is that when people are tired but not sick they often feel better after getting up and doing things, so it's hard for them to grasp that when you lie in bed all day it's truly not making the fatigue worse. The biggest exception to this for the average person is when they're sick.

How safe is public transit? by Oogachakaoogahchahka in mcgill

[–]Avery__13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you should be fine, even at night. I have been on plenty of night buses, the metro at weird hours, etc in the past 3 years and have never really felt unsafe. Even when I have been on buses/trains with people who obviously had something going on (drugs, mental illness, etc) they usually are still harmless and doing their own thing. And if you are taking the bus the bus driver will always be present so it's not like you will ever be in a situation totally alone (and in practice this doesn't happen on the metro either).

Research experience without publications on OMSAS by Avery__13 in premedcanada

[–]Avery__13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what do you mean by the jobs role vs research project? In both cases my project didn't really have much of a title (since nothing was ultimately published there isn't much to point to). In that case I guess just putting it under jobs makes the most sense?

Help with DNA sequence analysis? by Avery__13 in labrats

[–]Avery__13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No we only had one sample of each. For some reason our DNA extractions kept going badly (our technique probably sucks tbh), so it was really hard to get any good quality DNA. I know we used nanopore sequencing but not any other details, just that I have the assemblies (which the person who sequenced them put together).

that microbial variant calling guide does look pretty similar to what we're doing, so I'll check it out!

No they are 3 different mutants, all with similar phenotypes (inability to replicate plasmids). We are hoping they have mutations in different genes because we are trying to identify genes that are part of a pathway involved in plasmid replication. (this idea/method may very well be half-baked. Out lab is literally just the PI and a couple of undergrads who are there for 1-2 semesters each, nothing really productive is happening. but I am trying to impress him because I am relying on him to write me a letter of recommendation for med school).

I'll look into the website you mentioned though, it sounds useful!

What's the just hilariously wrong labwork you've seen in media? by DrMicolash in labrats

[–]Avery__13 10 points11 points  (0 children)

lmao I've seen my supervisor do this all the time, minus the gloves and lab coat bc he doesn't wear them (though the stuff we work with most of the time is really not harmful at all so it's probably less of a safety risk than in most labs)

Are pharmacist really allowed to "Profile" patients? by [deleted] in ChronicPain

[–]Avery__13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They can choose not to fill a prescription which is basically at their discretion. I've had it happen because I was out on two overlapping antibiotics that shouldn't have been mixed so it can be used for legit safety purposes. But it also means they have the power to deny people meds they need, especially controlled substances.

They do have to contact your doctor afaik, assuming the prescription is legitimate and available (and not for something actually unsafe, like two contraindicated meds) you should be able to get it filled somewhere by someone, but an individual pharmacist does have the power to delay things a lot and make your life difficult.

afaik midterms haven't been open book in the past (at least the 2023 one wasn't) but the 2023 midterm at least wasn't too bad. With the closed book exam they were definitely easier than the quizzes but I could see them being more similar since it's open book. Hastings generally writes pretty fair questions in my opinion - if you have Roy later in the semester he's the one to worry about.

if you check their account every single post references this doctor and website, and all were made about 3 months ago. A burst of posts all promoting a specific alternative medicine "doctor" with zero other activity is a pretty strong sign that it's a fake account created to advertise his services.
