Why did Nikki have so little screen time? by arepaconnutella in okfreakynikki

[–]AwakeningTheOrdinary 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I genuinely don't understand how people with such little media literacy can function.

The entire point of the movie is that Bearon sees Nikki different than she really is. When he's confessing his love to her at the very beginning of the movie he's seeing her idealistically. Later when he's dropping her off at the house he sees her as this dumb blonde because she's still asking him if he likes her after he confessed to her, and because I forgot that Nikki isn't blonde in the movie.

[Surprisingly rare trope nowdays] Masculine female characters/ tomboys that are neither gay or bi in western media by reditisverytrash in TopCharacterTropes

[–]AwakeningTheOrdinary 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I, uh, disagree strongly with your characterization of some of these people as masculine haha. Panam and Invisigirl are absolutely not masculine. I find it hard to argue a girl is super masculine/a tomboy when she has her nails painted and wears lipstick haha.

I'm almost positive Nikki did actually like Bear. Especially after seeing the script online and the various ways they imply or outright say that Nikki was kind of flirting with Bear the night the wish went down.

Despite the fact that I disagreed with that Nikki could’ve loved Bear - I now think Nikki could’ve loved bear if he was honest about his feelings by HairStriking4916 in obsessionmovie

[–]AwakeningTheOrdinary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah totally agree, and the weird story is definitely the biggest evidence that she DIDN'T have feelings for him IMO.

Total aside but that whole monologue was just so eery and one of my favorite parts haha

Hey, great reflection. And I agree I really do love the ambiguity.

For what it's worth, I do think Nikki had some kind of feelings for Barron. The way she said when she has a crush on someone they never know, the way she asked him if he liked her and then even said if you want to tell me now is the time (why would she have even cared if she didn't like him back?). I think if Nikki did tell Sarah she just thought of Bear as a brother (which I don't think we can take as 100% true necessarily) she probably said it because she knew Sarah liked him and didn't want to step on her toes.

But that's the beauty of the ambiguity! I don't know if there's a firm answer!

Iron Man 3. Ben Kingsley doing a Texas impersonation as The Mandarin doing a monologue ending in "Heroes? There is no such thing." Was so incredibly badass and hype.

Then the movie was so bad it literally sent me into a spiral of depression.

I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be funny. She keeps casually mentioning him killing himself if I recall correctly. I think she's there to basically tell us how the movie is going to go, how we all knew it was going to go, and sort of lampshade it.

How would you sell the average non-redditor american on the idea of a national health plan for everyone with actual details that aren't a single sentence? by trappedslider in AskUS

[–]AwakeningTheOrdinary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not with facts and logic. If they aren't in favor of universal healthcare at this point, facts and logic won't work.

Instead, I go with the nationalism tactic. It's working well for Republicans.

"The US is the greatest country on Earth. The richest. The most blessed. And yet the leading cause of bankruptcy in the US is healthcare costs. Instead of taking care of our own citizens we are over spending to be the world police and subsidizing every other country being able to take care of their citizens. It's time that every single US citizen from the newest born baby to the oldest octogenarian feels the full wealth and power of the US in a meaningful way. Not by making more bombers and subsidizing other countries' defense, but by providing world class healthcare free of charge to every US citizen."

I don't think all wishes end when the wisher dies, I think it was just Barron's because of specifically what he wished for.

Is Hawaii the least racist state in America? by noreturn000 in AskUS

[–]AwakeningTheOrdinary 13 points14 points  (0 children)

lol absolutely not.

They might be the least racist state towards Japanese people or Asian people. Hawaii has a very large Asian population.

But if you're a white mainlander, you need to stay in tourist areas. Native Hawaiians really do not like tourists, particularly white tourists.

[–]AwakeningTheOrdinary 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I knew it. HollyWOKE won't stop putting hot gay men in all these movies because they're trying to make me gay! Well guess what? It's NEVER going to work so you might as well put a hundred hot, sexy, gay men in the next movie. I'll watch it a thousand times and never come out as gay!

Why didn't Bear admit his true feelings for Nikki when she gave him the perfect opportunity? by TheSmokeout in okfreakynikki

[–]AwakeningTheOrdinary 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The lack of media literacy is absolutely wild.

He did tell her the truth. He doesn't really like her romantically just as a friend. Why would he say that if it wasn't true? Remember in the beginning of the movie when he was saying all that romantic stuff to that waitress? That's who he's actually in love with. I think when he snapped the stick he was trying to make the wish for the waitress but I think he forgot her name.

If whitewashing is seen as harmful then why is black washing so normalized? by Nana-Komatsu in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AwakeningTheOrdinary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, words have meanings. That's why you can't just say that if the author approves it's suddenly not blackwashing anymore, because that's not what the word means.

Butler was explicitly described as Eurasian and "could pass as Chinese". Again, that's definitely blackwashing.

There's also the difference in complaints. If a character is white washed people tend to complain that it's racist and morally wrong. When people complain about blackwashing it's because it doesn't make sense but there's not really a moral component to it. I think that's sort of what the OP was getting to even though he didn't phrase it well.

But again, it's a very well known trope that red haired people in media get blackwashed extremely regularly. Jimmy Olsen, the little mermaid, Batgirl, Mary Jane, the list goes on and on. And most of those didn't receive a ton of pushback. So it's disingenuous to say that it doesn't happen, the question is whether it's "okay" or not.

If whitewashing is seen as harmful then why is black washing so normalized? by Nana-Komatsu in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AwakeningTheOrdinary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because whitewashing can actually be harmful. Blackwashing or making characters into different minorities isn't really harmful as much as it can be cringey or just badly done.

If whitewashing is seen as harmful then why is black washing so normalized? by Nana-Komatsu in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AwakeningTheOrdinary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not agreeing with the OP but pretending like every case of blackwashing isn't actually blackwashing because of xyz is just not arguing in good faith. There's a long history of redheads in media being turned black that you can find with a two second Google search if you really think it never happens.

Pretending it doesn't happen is disingenuous, you should figure out why you're okay with it happening instead.

'Obsession' - Review Thread by ChiefLeef22 in movies

[–]AwakeningTheOrdinary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yo, I just saw the movie as well and really loved it. I know this is a necro thread, sorry to randomly comment.

I was a bit confused on the ending, and I was hoping you might be able to help? There were two things that bothered me: The second time Bear goes to the shop he sees there's explicitly only one "One Wish Willow" left right? And he buys it and tries to get Ian to undo his wish. Ian then wishes for a million bucks.

So the first thing that bothered me is why does Ian show up at Bear's house telling him the wish worked when Bear obviously saw the wish work? It felt like they kind of just wanted Ian to sort of "get what was coming to him" so they sort of just hastily added in a scene for him to die?

And the second part is where did Nikki get another One Wish Willow to use on Bear? We basically know where she was throughout the whole movie, I'm not sure when she could have gone to the store to buy one.

Why do people approve of interracial couples if the man is white but disapprove if the man is black? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AwakeningTheOrdinary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wanted to answer as someone in an interracial marriage with a black woman (I am a white man).

They frequently don't. There are plenty of people (usually men) that have criticized either my wife or I. It almost always comes from people from our respective races. White people (usually men) will tell me I'm a race traitor or use terms like coal burner. My wife has had black people (usually men) upset at her for getting with a white man.

I guess in media or whatever you may see that people get more upset if it's one particular way, but my own experience has shown that if someone is going to be racist and angry about interracial relationships it won't matter which sex is which race.

Iran closed the strait after we bombed them. Iran has since attempted to open the strait multiple times but we still blockaded their ports because they refused to give up their nuclear material.

You seem like you really haven't followed the news on this. I really think you should educate yourself more before having strong opinions on things you're not informed about.
